Hello!
So unfortunately due to health issues I'm having to remove my coil and I won't be able to be on the pill either. We always use condoms on our meets to prevent stds but we never had to be concerned about a unwanted pregnancy. But is a real concern for the both of us.
So we are looking for advice and what people's opinions and experiences are about the subject.

It depends on the reason for the coil and pills not being suitable, I suppose? E.g if coil migrated or caused pain OR is it that the hormones don't work? Unfortunately most of the alternatives (injection and implant) utilise the same sorts of hormones as the coil or pill. I had terrible problems with the Depo-provera injection and wouldn't personally recommend. Have you discussed the implant with your medical advisors? |

Very few conditions have progesterone as a true contraindication.
If you can't have the coil (hormone or non hormone) how about the implant?
If you're family is complete you could get sterilisation? Although 1 in 200 failure rate, and higher rate of ectopic pregnancy if you did fall pregnant.

I had implants for many years and never had a problem with them. I think they can last 3 years.
If you're after something more permanent I can recommend getting your tubes tied. Admittedly I don't know what it's like to have it done on its own as I had mine done at the same time as a planned caesarian, but I've had no issues with it at all. |

NHS don't usually offer the sterilisation route anymore as something they like to do. You really have to try to convince them and 9/10 times they still refuse it.
Like above I had mine done at the same time I had my c section done.

I had the Essure procedure.
Daecided to get sterilised after years of artificial hormones and trying every contraception barr the coil.
I was the first Woman in Shropshire to have it, along with one of the last, it was withdrawn over concerns to health but tbh it has been amazing for me, quick and simple.
I hope you find a solution, just take your time deciding, it's not an easy decision |

The coil did work for me but it also has cause extreme mood swing, pain, plus it dlmakes my health issue a bit worse.
But like you said most contraceptions use hormones and I was advised to not use any at the moment. So it seems like I will have to stay away from any form of contraception for a while. |

The only non hormonal options are condoms, copper coil and female condoms or a diaphragm. Or sterilisation. As I'm sure you know, pretty much everything else relies on some form of oestrogen, progesterone or both. |

Yeah unfortunately we knew that. Just looking for ideas outside of the box, like spermicidal gel. Plus people experience when in the same situation as us. |

Copper coil is hormone free, lasts 10 years and is 99% effective. Cons are if you suffer from heavy or painful periods they can get worse.
But fertility returns straight away once removed.

If you just want complete confidence in not getting up the duff, then the best choice is the contraceptive implant.
Once in, it lasts for 4 years, at which time you just have the old one removed and replaced. The wife has been using implant for the last 17 years, and there has been no near misses at all.
The only real side-effects are that you get long bouts between periods, but when they do come along, can be rather heavy.
The plus side is that having the implant is as good as being sterilised. |

They do as I'm on the list to have one. Went to my gp about got referred and now waiting for it. Didn't have to try and convince them either |

If you’re using condoms in conjunction, the risk is reduced.
But if you have a lot of sex without the spermicidal gel, you’re likely irritating your vagina anyway. No? |

IME most male condom failures are visible. So you have the morning after pill (yes hormonal but one off not long term) as back up.
Female condoms are more expensive and visually more obtrusive but offer another sensation, even more STD safety, plus no issues with fit if you're not sure who you'll be using them with  Some chaps like how the inner ring feels and they can be inserted in a variety of potentially fun ways. Hypoallergenic.
If you're relatively regular a medical (ie pill) abortion is obtainable at 'even the evangelicals are OK with it' stages of pregnancy. Obviously not great. But as a third level fall back (assuming barrier failure that you were unaware of in time for morning after pill) not the worst thing in the world.
If you're fertile, and you fuck, (or close to), you can get pregnant. Everything has a failure rate. It's just a risk you decide to take, with consequences you handle. |

Yeah you absolutely right. But that's the thing you may already have a small irritation on your vagina from different reasons like long session of sex, rough sex, etc and the spermicidal gel can make it even worse. Making you more vulnerable to stds.
Unfortunately I'm sensitive to irritations so it is definitely a concern for me. But is not out of our options for now. |

Not used very often now as most people go for hormonal contraception but there is the diaphragm which fits inside you.
You pop it in prior to sex and remove after. Normally used with spermicidal gel at the same time. |

As has been mentioned the copper coil is hormone free but it’s said to be brutal for pain/heavy periods over the first year.
If you’re using condoms so you really only need a back up contraceptive. So I’d track your cycle and only have sex when you’re not fertile. You cannot get pregnant if the egg and sperm don’t get to meet. You can buy crazy cheap ovulation test strips off Amazon, plus over time you learn the signs of your body ovulating, and avoid sex then. Egg white cervical mucus = no jiggy jiggy. |

Similar for us I’m not on contraception husband has had the snip
No other sex for us when ovulating / fertile and if I was super worried I would take the morning after Pill x |

However the op said she uses condoms but wants to double up on protection.

The male condom failure that resulted in my son existing was not obvious. Hence why I became a parent at 16. The OP does right to try and find other options to suit. |
