"Why would God have a gender?"

The Church always portrayed him as a man. Which had been decides isn't relevant for an omnipotent being

If there's a god (and I don't believe for one second there is)....then he's definitely male.

The whole creation thing was a rush job and let's face it, the world is a bit of a fuck up and very messy.

If God was female everything would have been much tidier, more organised and colour coordinated.

What difference would it make he/she/TV/TS/MTV/BBC The fact is he doesn't exist man did not create earth, who created the other trillion planets and what happens to the bible if its one of the other options and who are we trying to please a group of people lovely as they are who don't believe in god either.

I don’t watch or read that kind of news but God is already genderless, it’s only culture and language that uses gender to associate the attributes of power etc, and relationship of a kind, loving but also firm & occasionally angry! father to help understand the nature of God.

Supernatural spirits don't really have genders do they. ? Although the son was highly likely male.

That’s my understanding

Weren't they supposed to have created man in their image? That would suggest God (to those that believe in God) is male plus, the Lords Prayer... "our father"... and our gender specific references to God.

Our PARENT,

Who art in heaven

Hallowed be thy name

Thy kingdom come

Thy will be done

On Earth, as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread

And forgive us our trespasses,

As we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

But deliver us from evil.

Amen.

Not much needs to change for a gender neutral Lords prayer!!

If I was religious, I am not sure how I would feel about having to classify God as being gonochoric or herm_phrodite or othwise.

I would say that asexual species can reproduce, essentially a form of self cloning, without any male intervention. Insects, some reptiles snakes and sharks, even chickens can fertilise their own eggs, so going going by the law of averages, God is more likely to be female on that front as there are precisely zero known cases of male’s being able to reproduce or clone themselves without a female. Unless you’re a clown fish, but that doesn't count as you change sex first...

Personally, I just want to know if Adam and Eve had bellybuttons...

Whilst I agree that much of it, especially the New Testament, is a work of exaggeration, dreams, stories and other non realistic fantasy, I don't agree that it's all fiction. A lot of it, the Old Testament in particular, has been proved to mirror actual events in history, many of which we are only recently discovering. The flood, for example, the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, the story of David and life in general from those periods of time. Not only is it a valuable historical resource, it was also the main reason for the invention of the printing press. It's also one of the main foundations of philosophy, not to mention inspiring some of the greatest art and music ever created by human beings.

Man=Human. It’s an easy mistake to make

To understand why religions are male gendered you need to understand the history of inequality, and specifically female inequality. Since around 9000 years ago when gender inequality first began , males have dominated women through religions, wars / politics, and more recently capitalism, so the language of the bible simply reflects that culture.

Here and There

All references seem to suggest God is male (in the bible at least. I don’t know enough about other religions to comment).

So to believe in the bible is to believe that God is male. To me, anyway. I don’t think you can believe in the Bible and think otherwise.

A straightforward opinion that probably holds true for many, but I think it’s not that simple, I imagine that most people, if asked, do not believe every word of the bible as absolute truth, and appreciate that (certainly the NT) was written by men, and has been handed down verbally or in fragments for hundreds of years until it was written down, rewritten, changed, shortened, lengthened, translated, edited, curated, censored… etc.

People who “believe in the bible” or more like to admit to believing in its teaching, morals or ethics, rather than treat it like a signed witness statement. If not, they’ll be mad when they read Leviticus…

I’m reminded of the greatest bit of Radio 4 I ever heard broadcast in which Richard Dawkins took some bishop to task because of a poll that suggested 40% of people who identify as Christian can’t name the first book of the new testament - he took this to mean they can’t be real Christians, if they can’t even name something so basic as that. When asked what the full name of Darwins book on evolution was called by reply…not only could he not name it correctly, but he even got flustered in the middle of being owned so hard that he said “Oh God”…. in his embarrassment . TL;DR Let’s not tell Christians how to be Christian.

Yes, scientific textual analysis has now validated and proven most of it as true accounts but not all.

But to focus on that misses the point completely, it’s not only an historical text . Like Job, a play written approx 9000 years ago, likely mostly fiction, who knows, but does it matter if it helps people suffering to find answers & meaning in that suffering? I think even if I didn't believe it id follow it on financial advice & parenting anyway! I’ve never found a better manual. As well as art and music you could add free education , hospitals and many other things it inspired.

As far as I can see, gods are concepts. Concepts, depending on specifics, can have genders, no genders, or (other) as only limited by the human imagination.

It's up to the people for whom these concepts are important, to work out the details.

"Why would God have a gender?"

Pretty much agree with this.

The concept of what God is has been so watered down over the years that we consider it akin to a man or woman... Which is ridiculous when you think of it.

A creator of our Universe, time and literally everything that has been and will ever be, will likely be so beyond our comprehension it's impossible to start making guesses at what it could be.

God is God - Just call it God.

All of this is of course dependant on whether you believe that such a thing exists in the first place.

The Bible is also but one representation of Christianity (history being written by the victors - lots of censorship up to the council of Nicea), which is but one set of beliefs that involves a god or gods

I'd want to know what the original language says (and possibly if the earliest copies are likely to be faithful to the original religious tradition - Hebrew scriptures are outside my wheelhouse but transmission of ancient texts is something I'm pretty conversant in).

Thinking of ancient Greek, for example, the word "anthropos" is often translated as man, where it could be "person" or occasionally (with difference grammatical markers and as an insult) "woman".

If an ancient Greek wrote something like "people were made in the image of God" - older translators might choose to translate that as "man". (There are other ways to denote "man" in ancient Greek without this ambiguity)

Well no, because it's a specific indicator of female.

Unfortunately there's no indicator of "god" that isn't also a marker of male, and it becomes the default.

Male grammatical markers as default is also common in languages that retain more gendered markers than English.

Personally as someone who has a religious faith and plays an active part in our local church I respect what individuals feel or want to believe as I expect them to do to. I will not be told what I should think of believe. As someone else mentioned the bible has been transcribed/translated numerous times over thousands of years so may differ through people interpretations. I feel it should really only be used as a guide to help you formulate your own opinion and feelings. These are personal to you and you alone. So basically there is no right or wrong answer to this its what you want to think he is.

God actually said let us make man in our own image. Plural, but the Hebrew meaning means 3 not two. God is spirit, soul and body- hence father son and Holy Spirit. Hence was are also tripartite. Male/ female should not be attributed to God

Yeah I discovered last year that the Lord's prayer I grew up with isn't as widespread as I thought it was. *Shrug*

God's an invention so humans don't feel so scared about oblivion/weather /natural events. Religion then formed as a means to control the populous (be that a village or a country), the main religions seemed to have been formed by men for population control and the subjugation of women. So it's totally academic as god doesn't exist

It just means humans are a reflection of God -character, spiritually, intellectually etc - distinguishing us from animals

I’m not a religious man. …. but wasn’t the bible the word of God.? Or did the church use artistic license when they suggested God was a HE?

It's a made up book so may as well make up the Gender.

If people were true followers of the bible surely they couldn't change the gender, have gay marriage, have female priests or a bit of bum fun.

It's God's way I guess!

Possibly the best reply yet. As a man and woman of faith to say that is nice to know.

As someone who does not believe in God, my opinion is that gods and religions were created by men to forge a system of fear and control. We have to consider that ancient societies didn't possess the knowledge or understanding of the world as we do today and would simply believe what people in power told them. With men in power, they would naturally create the idea of a god as a man so they did not undermine themselves because they viewed women as inferior (that's a fact, not my opinion btw).

The problem with today's world is that the select few with a voice of power on a global stage still believe that the masses should be dictated to and accept what we are told is right/acceptable.

If you believe in God, form your own opinion about gender. Nobody can prove you wrong!

Do we have any photos of God yet? Or are we still relying on renaissance paintings as proof?

I agree. Jesus was definitely a pale skinned, white man with blue eyes and light brown hair/beard

There's a new conspiracy theory to perpetuate. You heard it here first, folks. Soon, it'll be all over the news.
