"Ocean colour scene the verve "
Never a fan of Ocean Colour Scene.
The Verve were quite cool but I only really liked the one song by them, which was History. |

I don't consider The Verve as 'britpop' because in doing so would be a disservice.
They are a 'psychedelic rock' band and, quite simply, one of the best bands of the 90s.
'History' is atmospheric. Disregard Urban Hymns and instead listen to their first two: A Storm in Heaven and A Northern Soul. |

I do wonder what all these Britpop artists are doing these days.
Maybe not the likes of Liam and Jarvis etc, but the ones lower down the food chain, like the members of Kingmaker and Sleeper for example. |

They were doing 90s revival gigs with a pr company called starshaped along with the bluetones, dodgy, space and cast to name but a few. Very well attended and reasonably priced too. |

"Pulp is still amazing and playing in July!
Loved Sleeper (esp lead singer) and Echobelly…
Or is this just about 90s music?" Louise Wener had such a sexy voice |

"Gone but not forgotten.
The main reason I miss the 90s.
Jarvis, Damon, Brett and Justine...to name a few.
Who was your favourite band/artist?"
Justine was hot, not so much now hanging with Melvyn Brag being all arty. |

For a few years album after album of quality.. Wonder what caused that.. So many good bands with unusually excellent debut albums...
Primal scream (brit pop?), been listening to a bit of kula shaker lately.. Embrace, cast... Some great tunes. |

Sound of Drums (Kula Shaker)

Do Prodigy count as britpop? One of my favourite groups but I find it hard to categorise them along with the other bands mentioned. Also got my concert tickets for them this year too. |

I couldn't get Sheffield so I'm going to Dublin
Dublin is where I'm going, but then that's the most local for me "
When I saw you were from Hillsborough I automatically thought of Sheffield ! |

Haha, yeah there's one in Northern Ireland. I'm sure the home gig at Sheffield would be the best though |

I think they do. Much of their music was very popular, very British and mainstream. They attempted to be super edgy but much of their music was fun |

I'd say no.
They started as your typical techno band (remember Charley and Out of Space) but developed into something a lot more heavy, maybe even industrial.
Brit 'pop', no. |

There's a song of theirs called Your Skies are Mine.
Might be considered a bit slow by some people but I like it. |

They helped to give Pulp one of their finest moments though, by pulling out of Glastonbury in 95. |

I'm sitting here with an old copy of NME in front of me from 02/03/96.
It has the iconic image of Jarvis Cocker flicking a V at the camera on the cover. |

"This thread has highlighted the complete lack of some peoples musical knowledge
Indeed.
We've delved into American grunge now.
"
Feel another thread needed to bebate:-
US vs UK - which country has produced better music?
In all seriousness American popular music has been the dominant influence in music around the planet since jazz and blues started to spread about a 100 years ago.
Some would argue, the United States has produced the better music...
For me it's simply down to personal preferences, I've an eclectic taste and like all kinds of music from all over the World, be it soul, country, jazz, dance, classic, rock, etc. I couldn't care less which country produced it. If it sounds good to me and I enjoy then it's all good.
luv British artists like John Lennon, bands like Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Prodigy, etc.
Not so keen on the music produced after 1990's (1950's to 1990 - best music artists produced). Worldwide. |

Oasis - Up until Be Here Now were brilliant.
Blur - Kept on producing the goods.
Pulp- A great band.
Suede- still brilliant.
Do we include the Manics?
The Verve and Embrace- great singles bands but never great.
In terms of popstars for the wankbank. Justine, Louise and Sonia have been mentioned. But I will bring all the attention to Marijne van der Vlugt of Salad. |

This. In fact, just Storm in Heaven and the early eps and pretend they never reformed. |

"Pulp were the boys for me….

Apparently the Stone Roses are considered Britpop.
But id disagree. As would most Roses fans.
They were part of the Madchester/Baggy scene.
Along with the brilliant Charlatans, Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets
And James too.
Id suggest the Britpop culture started after the Roses.
Im a bit shocked, but no ones mentioned the amazing Placebo yet!!

I never even considered Placebo.
Maybe because I thought they wer American.
As for Baggy bands, I never saw anything special in what they were doing.
James had a few good songs, The Charlatans, Inspiral Carpets and Roses one good song each, and The Happy Mondays completely over-rated. |
