"A gentleman always walks closest to the road when with a lady.
He also opens doors for people regardless of age or gender."
Someone once told me this was from the olden days when people threw buckets of piss out of their windows |

"But then you run the risk of getting it on your fingers.
A TRUE gentleman knows the correct butter to toast surface area ratio. "
Just stuck your fingers. Won't be the first time |

"..who gives a shit about pointless arbitrary labels?
Then why post such a banal thread "
Cause life is so arbitrary who knows what you might find on a public forum... it's all a mystery |

Almost correct, back in those days the piss and shit used to collect in the door ways and rot any wood on the threshold so the woman would walk first in case the wood broke, as for walking on the outside that was to keep the man's sword arm free, today it's a gentleman thing |

A man online can be defined by by telling ladies exactly what he wants to do to her regarding sex and stuff.
A gentleman can be defined a gentleman by some ladies because he white knights them first and eventually says what the man came out with straight away.

And it has confused me over the years of growing up. Because I have found that some women like and enjoy being treated with no manners and lack of respect from a man, than going with a gentleman who will give her nothing but respect and affection and compassion. Why is that? No matter what I have said on this post tonight, I still root for a gentleman, that's the way I was brought up so that's the way I will carry on being. |

We walk on the right side pavement, M'lady to my right.
The sword is worn on the left hip and is drawn by the right hand.
Thus when approached by ner do wells I have space to draw the sword and despatch them to their maker, whilst not putting M'lady in harms way of my draw.

To me it's about how I act towards the people I interact with. Be open, honest and respecting their choices/decisions.
To many men on her are extremely hypocritical about the decision to be on this site. When you take the time to speak to them you realise they on her for similar reasons as most men. They enjoy the physical act or acting out their fantasies, being lusted after and don't want the hassle of traditional relationship at this time in their life. |

"No difference at all but if you have to tell others you are either you are obviously neither. "
Yup, same with "classy" it seems, the more people insist they are, the less it appears |

A Gentleman treats a woman with respect, especially in front of others.
However there are many ways a woman feels respect, there is no one way fits all.
Women i tend to get on best with like being a lady in public and my fuck toy in private. |

"A Gentleman always tells a woman she's right even if if she's wrong"
I find having a discussion on why she is of that opinion, then talking it through until she discovers what is actually correct is far better than having her believe a load of rubbish. (this is true with everyone) |

It is also possible for both parties to be correct. And at times there's a third option. |

The post i replied to specified that the woman was wrong. In general terms i agree there can be multiple correct answers or truths. |

To be a man one requires the correct chromosomes , a human form with a penis.
To be a gentleman he requires the above plus an over riding desire to be perceived as and accepted by others who conform to manufactured behaviours - they believe sets them apart from other humans.
It 's a bit like being in the Morris Dancing Troupe and constantly tapping your bells n waggling your poms poms ..... not forgetting the delightful squeal.
Just a way of behaving. |

Ms Crumpet is one suggesting that men can behave badly? |

A modern gentleman is considerate, respectful, and kind to everybody.
He treats people as he would wish to be treated. tolerates opposing views, is able to listen, digest and respond.
He has integrity and values.
Everything else would be a "nice to have" eg a sense of fun, generosity, humour, wit etc.
Just my conventional view.
PS Oh, and yes, he could be a swinger but applies his values to the people he meets in the swinging community, too. |

The way I see it is you either live a life of care, respect and love for the world you live in and the people who live in it or you don't. And you either stand up for and defend those principles or you do. Your either a good man or not. But you don't need to be a man to believe, practice and defend these values. They have nothing to do with birth sex and everything to do with common humanity.

A gentleman is an outdated concept where the bloke had to open doors pull chairs out, step in puddles so she didn't get wet,, all that one sided sexist shite. A man is a realistic person who realizes that kind of stuff isn't equality and it should go both ways. |

The whole concept isn't outdated in my view; albeit part of the definition might be seen to be:
a chivalrous, courteous, or honourable man.
"he behaved throughout like a perfect gentleman" Oxford definition.
I'd have thought honourable courteous characteristics would be seen as highly valued traits, and whilst all people should aim to be so, many males need proper role models and an image to aim for, moreso than ever from what I'm seeing. |

My grandad told me this...
A man raises his voice or turns his tone to be heard, a gentleman speaks with frankness but always with sincerity and sympathy. |

Your antecedent would seem to have been a guy who was worth listening to! |

The amazingly successful BBC radio broadcast, ITMA, which very few on this site would ever have heard of, and definitely would not have listened to, used to define a gentleman as a person who took his boots off, before attempting to seduce a lady.
It wasn't stated as baldly as that, but the live audience got the message.
ITMA was an acronym for the programme's full title It's That Man Again!
I think its heyday was the 1940s and 1950s, before TV became the popular medium that it used to be. |

Going to a flogging school and being taught by severe beating not to get caught when you lie steal or cheat - while telling the world you stand for honesty and integrity, is a big part of being an English gentleman.
A gentleman is also schooled in the art of passing the time. Think cards, maybe hanging out at theatre doors trying to entice showgirls; possibly slaughtering wildlife and posh fish.
Also rogering lower class girls and those that will take sixpence for a feel, at covent garden lol..
