NHS anti-smoking ad

Has anyone seen this? The voiceover says that "every 15 cigarettes you smoke causes a mutation".

The imagery is pretty gruesome and the ad is obviously timed to coincide with new year resolutions.

Do you think this is an impactful ad? Does it make a difference to smokers or is there now nothing more to be learned from infomercials like this?

If it manages to make some people decide to give up or stay away from ciggies, then the ad would still be considered as a success.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

It was running over Christmas.

As with most things, some people may stop and think and it persuade them to consider giving up. The stubborn will see the message and dig their heels in.

The target market is young people. If you can stop them from starting you have the potential for a whole generation of non-smokers.

Doesn't make a difference to me, if its true then I'm fully mutated. Stuff like that wouldn't stop me smoking, however I aim to stop for other reasons

I was shocked when i saw it. I stopped smoking 1 year ago, but I smoked for 30 yrs. I must be full of mutations, ( prob going to end up a ninja turtle at some point).

I guess the teenagers watching this will prob use it on their parents, if it helps people stop then great, but i think it will be more effective in stopping people from ever starting to smoke.

They have tried everything from heart felt pleas of children, to pictures of lung cancer on packets. The fact of the matter is we are more clues up than ever on the effects of smoking but if someone is determined to do it then no amount of gross ads are gonna stop them.

They keep doing this putting even more graphic pics up about how smoking harms us, people will smoke if they want to , these adverts just waste money ....

The real waste of money is the amount we spend on treating the effects of smoking. Not saying we shouldn't treat people, but we shouldn't allow such dangerous products to be so widely available.

Good point but where do they draw the line, should they not treat alcholics or druggies or people who injure themselves doing crazy sports?

Have to disagree with you there. Yes we spend a lot of money treating people, but many of those became addicted before the full facts were released, others are passive smokers.

Unfortunately the ammount of tax paid by smokers makes it less attractive for the government to ban tobacco completely.

This country cant even police the use of Class A drugs, never mind tobacco.

There is an old episode of Yes Prime Minister (The Smoke Screen) where Sir Humphrey points out to Hacker why it's worth letting people smoke.

A smoker myself, but i would not be adverse to banning it. The govermen moan its costing on the NHS but bet they earn more themselves from the tax.

Same goes for all the hype about folk been obese etc,the goverments moans how much it costs but will never shut Mcdonalds lol.

Just a big exuse to keep taking all our money in taxes.

Countrys gone to shit.

Lol, happy new year x

And smokers tend to die before they put too much strain on the NHS through age related illnesses.

That's exactly the point made in Yes Prime Minister.

The costly thing is obesity - diabetes is really expensive.

The very point made in the media today. Surgical intervention for obesity gets paid back in 2/ 3 years by reducing costs associated with diabetes etc.

As with most health services if you integrate things and treat people as a whole and not individual bits then it generally works better and costs less in the long run.

We've got into a conveyor belt mode of health care, which works for developing specialisms and managing the costs of that service. It doesn't reduce long term costs of provide the most effective abd efficient service.

There was quite a lot of research a couple of years ago on how to improve diabetes services. It found that it started with education and prevention work. What's the first thing to be cut when times are hard? Prevention.

Not quite the same.

Only one person makes the decision about smoking.

Both (or more) parties to the sex decide on the condom use and all have to agree.

Die of obesity or lung cancer, i opted for lung cancer lol

i know a lot of people will tell me how stupid i am for starting smoking after all them years but i did what worked for me and i honestly dont think id have lost the weight without the fags

People are good at ignoring facts and reality so if they dont want to accept it they won't. It may stop some in the early stages of smoking or I hope so.

Good for you. It interests me why some are able to not ever be tempted to try and others have one and then can't stop. Cigarettes are considered the ultimate gateway drug.

I started smoking when I was nine and stopped when I was 18. It never got to more than 10 or so a day. It was a peer pressure thing combined with the curiosity and defiance in the beginning. When I decided to stop I was able to do it within a week and only had one again about 4 years later and I couldn't understand why I had ever had one in the first place.

My Dad died when only 54. I was 12. He was a fit, strong man who didn't drink but smoked about 40 Woodbine a day.

I swore then I'd never have anything to do with tobacco and that pledge also kept me from the whacky baccy my pals were experimenting with.

Very true, i have piled on the weight since giving up. Yet i have not eaten more. My doctor says its my motabolism which has slowed due to not smoking !! Anyway, im about to tackle that with the same determination that I put into stopping smoking, .... and if it doesnt work then what the hell, I can breathe, taste and run up the stairs without gasping for breath ( even tho my wobbly bits take a bit longer to stop wobbling)

Yes i smoke but i also eat healthy and rarely drink.i don't think i live more unhealthy than an obese non-smoker who doesn't keep fit and is over the alcoholunit allowance most times of the year.

Everybody knows the risks of the usual vices in life, choices we make are our own:we live or die with them, well i'm going in the garden for a fag,all the fresh air as i never smoke in the house must harden me up as i'm never ill, unlike many of my non-smoking collegues!!(susie)

It just makes me turn the TV over tbh. I've smoked for 38 years (I'm 47 now) so if you add up all the '15 cigarettes' I've had in that time I should have a mutation the size of Manhattan.

I roll my own now though. Can't stand filtered cigs, plus it's a fraction of the cost.

These adverts are a pointless waste of money. In order to smoke every smoker has to lie to themselves about the effects or block it out which is why the pictures on packets have had absolutely no effect on reducing numbers.

Anti smoking ads do not work in my opinion ...for someone to give up smoking permanently they have to want to its that simple....telling someone (who doesnt want to give up) its bad for them wont change their minds ..we know its bad for us we're not stupid...ok maybe stupid for starting in some peoples eyes but you know what I mean ..in saying that I do believe they may have an impact on younger generations ...maybe preventing them from starting in the first place
