So my car is currently off the road and I had to use the bus earlier.

When I first got on I had to sit next to someone as it was busy but by the time I got off it was only me and the person I was sitting next to.

I didn't want to look weird by moving as soon as seats on their own became available but the more empty the bus got I became feeling more awkward and wondering if I looked like a weirdo still sitting next to a stranger with the whole bus to ourselves

Should I have moved or is that weirder than just staying where I was?

I haven't used public transport in about 20 years but when I lived in London the only place you'd move seats when loads became free was the tube. Never on buses. Not even night buses.

It just seems weird and rude.

Bus wanker!

How far from the front of the bus were you and how long til your stop?

One option would have been close to stop and near the back, move closer to the front ready to depart.

Not used a bus for about 6 years, worst part was I got a ticket on app and machine wasn't working on journey there or back so I could have saved myself some money

In a town full of colours

I would have moved. My sciatica plays up if I can't fidget and find comfy spots and I'd hate to be the one causing the person to think "bloody hell I wish she'd hurry up and move. There is a whole bus free"...

And almost at the back of bus and journey was about half hour

Depends where the open seat is.

Just across the aisle then shuffle across you'll both be more comfortable.

If it's 5 seats back you'll look weird and everyone will assume the person you're fleeing from has something wrong with them.

You should have got to the point of it being so awkward that you should have either:-

Got off straight away and waited for another bus

Or

Bring it up about how awkward it is making the situation even more awkward, so you have to get off

Do the hand waft and stand up whilst pinching your nose closed and move as far away as possible.

If you’re gonna move then make it worth while.

What a valuable thread! I’ve been in that position many times. Next time I’ll come back here for tips.

What about when a better spot in a cafe opens up. Do you find an excuse for the person next to you who kept making small talk, or just move and never look back?

At least for next time you know! And another top tip for the bus is don't have a wank unless the bus driver gives you the signal (the signal is usually he crashes the bus into a local dogging spot).

Do what I do. Bring your own chair (on wheels) and park it in the special space at the front. Main downside is when standing people's arses or groins are in your face when it's busy, but you never have to sit next to anyone else!
