This is a particular grumble of mine.

Why can’t people stack a dishwasher as per the manufacturers instructions? It works so much better !

Glasgow / London

Well your first problem there is that people would need to read the instructions.

"efficient" load in getting as many items to fit in as possible to minimise total number of uses needed. Depends on the items going in.

The manufacturer's instructions only work if all your crockery, pots and pans conform to what they expected. A lot of the soup/cereal bowls I have don't stack very easily. And don't get me started on the cat's bowls.

I've developed a stacking strategy that works for me, sod what the manufacturers want.

That’s entirely acceptable, but the random approach is really a sign of societal breakdown

My dishwasher is a pain in the arse.

I should really stop calling him that, though

My OCD does not approve of the random approach. Just the same as it does not approve of people leaving great big gouges in the butter. Just take a layer off the top and leave it even, you bloody savages

Instructions?! Nahhhhh, just chuck them in as full as you can and set it off. Works every time absolutely fine for me.

I slice the end off the butter, for example when making mash. No gouging though.

I hope that doesn't offend too much.

Stop there! “Layer off the top” of butter?

It’s one end to the other.

In our house, (as she is Italian) dishes are virtually rinsed clean before going in the dishwasher. No food on anything and I have to say I’m converted!

Wooden rolling pins, spoons, chopping board, chuck the lot in. I don't have time to load the dishwasher and also wash up by hand.

More important question is "why can't people stack my dishwasher according to my instructions?"

I put them in the dishwasher and then use a chantry sharpener to hone them before use.
