This is my first post in the forums so please be kind, i've been lurking for a while.
My "diet" starts again properly tomorrow. I've lost 4 stone in the past 14 months doing weightwatchers online and hoping that 2013 will see me lose another 3 stone. For that I'm going to have to get off my butt and do some exercise though and I am such a lazy mare |

Started this morning. 12 kilos to lose. Fruit only today then home made juice and water for a week. Exercise starts next week after the juice and hope to be at target weight by end of Feb. Aim is to lose 4-5 kilos in first week and then 1 kilo a week thereafter.

Yeah I'm back on it from today, I had got down to 15,12 from 23 but I've put a stone and a half back on over the last 3 months or so just not exercising and eating crap food, but it all starts today healthy eating and back out on the bike even joined a club this time to make me stick to it, hopefully get down to 15 and then I'm happy |

I'm on it too, nothing drastic, just healthy eating, I might even get some sexercise in too I have a lot to lose tho, so it's going to be a battle, but once it's gone, I'll be a different person, I'm so much more confident when I'm slimmer....good luck everyone |

Another one here. After a 2012 dominated by injury and illness I've put on well over a stone in weight. Made a conscious decision to have Decemeber away from running and cycling and have a blow out on food. I think January is going to be a tough month, but I've entered a half marathon in March to give myself some focus |

I think every cyclist I know found 2012 a tough year. No fun riding in that weather all year!
A handy hint for cycling weightloss, if you cycle to work and it's less than an hour's ride, do some mornings on an empty stomach - not even tea or coffee for breakfast. It makes a massive difference. Google fasted training. |

As with all other diets bit useless if exercise is not increased. |

I'll be on the exercise bike from tomorrow, with the aim to lose the 3kg I put on since Dec 12, and to build up stamina so that I can do more than a couple of miles with the dog running next to me along dirt tracks when the days are longer and weather better.

Still have one more Snow Ball left, and a nice piece of steak, plus some smoked salmon, and some cheese to finish by the end of the week.
Nuts and other savoury snacks will keep.

dont waste your time on a diet, they simply do not work. Exercise and sensible healthy eating do. someone mentioned cycling, not particularly good either. weight lifing is good as you continue to burn calories post exercise. Running is ok but bad for joints, typically 100 cal per mile, walking at high intensity better for your joints and burns typically 80 cal per mile. I would recommend a book by Ranulph Fiennes called fit for life |

It makes a massive difference. Google fasted training." The reason the fasted training works is that first thing in the morning, your blood sugar level is at a 24hr low and if you then cycle, walk or jog etc on an empty stomach, your body gets the energy it needs from its on-board source - fat cells. I used to do this back in the 90's when I was in a position work-wise to cycle the 23 miles each way to work (weather was better then than 2012!) and lost over 4 stone in no time.

cycling is a load bearing exercise, you arent moving your body weight as in running for instance. If you are cycling on roads in a town you are constantly stopping, slowing down and not cycling fast enough or long enough to make it an effective exercise. If you live in the country side or have access to a cycle track then its better. |

Re cycling : I do regular spin classes and as they are high intensity they are a great work out. Cycling (and walking) are more effective when they are done at high intensity... just cycling/ walking along at slow comfortable pace does not really increase the metalbolism as much. Having said that for anybody with any health issues even that kind of exercise is better than sitting on the sofa! It all depends on your base line fitness level and it is wise to speak to a trainer or GP before starting any form of exercise if you have not done that in a while.
Good luck to anybody who has good New Years resolutions and wants to get fitter in 2013! |

Cycling is only load bearing in as much as your bum is on the saddle and holding up your body weight. What it is, though, is Non-Impact exercise, which IS good...

Yeah I was a right fat bastard when I lived in Camden and used a bike as my primary source of transport, oh know wait...
You are missing the point that someone riding in traffic is still burning more calories than someone on a bus or in a car. |

You should have paid more attention in class then. Because anyone that dismisses anaerobic exercise and solely endorses weight training as a means of weightloss is giving out advice that is shockingly poor.

Threads like this make me chuckle as there are always experts who defend one form of exercise/ diet/ life style over another. For me the truth lies somewhere in the middle, that some life styles/ exercise regimes etc suit some but not all people. Same with diets or dietary regimes. I recently did a three week bootcamp and while I really enjoyed rolling in the mud at 6.30 am... (NOT) it did teach me a lot about myself and the fact that some exercises I simply cannot do as they do more harm than good in MY case). It just all depends and people with seemingly opposing _iews can sometimes all be right |

Read this a second time. Don't know where you get this from, but any cycling which involves a mixture of speeds and cadences will burn calories and fat as well as any other. The least amount of calorie and/or fat burn happens on medium distance cycling at a constant speed, as you are not using as large amount of burning effort as you would for repeated slowing/acceleration, nor are you cycling for long enough to achieve a time-based burn.

Spot on, Aphrodite
Exercise - or, rather, the ones which work for the individual - should be approached on a 'horses for courses' basis. What suits and works for one, will not suit another.

Agreed.
I hope my comments on this thread aren;t been misconstrued. Though running and cycling are my preference I accept they are not always the best option. I get annoyed when someone like Octavius Stunt states his opinion and hos preference as fact. Of course people can use core and weight training to lose weight but to dismiss anaeorobic work is laughable. The reality is all exercise is good. Be that gym classes, Zumba, Wii Fit, even just walking to the shops. It all adds to the calories out side of the equation. |

Well I have to admit that Chris Hoy and Bradley Wiggins look pretty unfit....
Basically anything that raises your heart rate will help burn calories. Most people need 1500-2000 calories a day just to do everyday things. Weight is gained when you eat more than your basic metabolic rate, weight is lost when you eat less. Exercise helps burn calories and reduce fat (not weight though). So to look better you eat less and move more.
The real discussion about which exercise is better is when you reach a plateau and start struggling to reach your goal weight or level of fitness.
When it comes to body shape I reckon swimmers are the best looking. And I love swimming so will be doing that. I'll leave the running and cycling to the uber fit and masochists. |

" try reading what i said again mister, i did not advocate weight training over aerobic exercise at all. In fact i regularly run 8 mile a day mon sat with mixes of fartleks and interval training, 13 mile "LSD"on sunday also adding hill training a few times a month. For running or any cardio exercise to be effective in burning fat instead of glycogen you need to be doing it for at least an hour. Cardio only burns cals while you exercise, weight training burns cals post exercise. In fact i thinbk i was suggesting a combination of both cardio weights and a sensible diet. |

And where does a swimmers physique come from? A correctly put together regime of multi-training involving a variety of aerobic and anaerobic exercise.

If I can make it 3 laps before sinking I'll be happy. Although I do enjoy weight training so will be doing that too.
I used to do the gym 5 days a week but illness and lethargy got in the way in 2012. I am hoping for more motivation this year. |

I think that is where most people agree really that it is a combination of exercises (and diet) that uses different parts of the bodyand of course some people find some sports more fun than others. I love swimming, skiing and weight work outs as well as cycling but I am not fond of running at all and it does not suit my ankles either.. so I stick to that. And sex! |

It is a fact however that there are exercises that are more effecive at burning calories. Knowing how difficult it is for people to maintain motivation when they arent getting the results they hope for i attempted to point people in the right direction, at the same time as busting the long held myth that cardio is the most effecive exercise for weight loss. Having studied fitness instrucing for 2 years and reading 100's of books of the many thousands that are out there, the book i recommended was by miles the most useful tool i found on how to lead a more healthy life. Hardly surprising as its written by the worlds greatest living explorer and no doubt the fittest man on the planet for his age. |

The most important word in what you have said is.... Motivation. All the exercise plans in the world (even Aphrodites protein based one!!!! ) won't work if you don't summon up the motivation from somewhere - and at times it is VERY hard to do so - to actually put them in to action. And, unless you do, you ain't going to balance the 'calories-in/calories-out' equation. Not ever!

"whats wrong with cycling ?
cycling is a load bearing exercise, you arent moving your body weight as in running for instance."
i must be doing it wrong then as ive put alot of muscle on everywhere ie my calfs, thighs, back and arms so im gonna stick with it ! |

You can read as many books as you like but unless you actually follow them they are just doorstops. Although you could probably build up some muscle tone lifting them. |

good luck to anyone starting a diet today.
remember determination is the key.
get some post it notes and write on them the food which you think are bad for you or hel you pile on weight.
stich each one on the fridge, freeze, cupboard where that food lives and put a big NO on the post it note with the name of the food underneath.
find something to do with your hands so instead of snacking in front of the tv your doing something else.
drink plenty of water to keep you flushed and cut down on tea, coffee, alcohol and fizzy drinks.
but good luck. nothing is easy or free and to get what you want you have to work for it. |

"dont waste your time on a diet, they simply do not work. I would recommend a book by Ranulph Fiennes called fit for life
What a load of rubbish. yep thats the shit they teach you at college on a fitness instructor course.
You should have paid more attention in class then. Because anyone that dismisses anaerobic exercise and solely endorses weight training as a means of weightloss is giving out advice that is shockingly poor.
try reading what i said again mister, i did not advocate weight training over aerobic exercise at all. In fact i thinbk i was suggesting a combination of both cardio weights and a sensible diet."
I agree |

"weightwatchers for me and plenty of water and plenty of what i fancy at weekends
xxxxxxx" Cant remember if I said it or was going to say that... I think WW is a healthy life style rather than a diet as they recommend exercise as well. And the bottom line in every life style change has to be the outcome : If it works for you.. then that is what matters! Good luck! |

Im one of those lucky people who no matter what I eat or how little excercise I do I don't put weight on. I normally excercise regularly, but have done nothing over Christmas and still weigh the same, lucky me. |

Anyone considering ditching a few lbs this year should look up my fitness pal. The website / app, not a pal of mine. I, male, lost 40 lbs the other year using it to just log food and keep track of what I was shovelling in, couldn't recommend it higher. Plus tis free, easy and you don't have to go to fat club. |

Sounds great and as you said it is free and surely suitable for some people. Those who have a fair amount to lose and have struggled over the years often do need the personal ongoing support of "fat club" meetings. Weight loss for many people is nt a simple matter of cutting down calories as there are other, more complex factors that have prevented them from being successful before.
Again I think it is horses for courses and whatever suits the individual. |

no doubt some find it harder than others but what you say simply isnt true.
It is as simple as cutting down calories, its a basic law of physics. If you dont supply your body with more energy than it needs then you will lose weight.
No illness, drug, or psychological condition will ever change this.
I know there are, and have worked through myself, many many reasons people find it hard to lose weight but lets not pretend it ever boils down to something other than eating too much |
