So only one from from each decade upwards.

Horror is personally subjective of course. But the following did manage to rattle even the most diehard of horror fans upon release...
1960s - Psycho (1960)
1970s - The Exorcist (1973) - although I always say Jaws (1975), it made the WHOLE world scared to paddle
1980s - The Shining (1980)
1990s - The Ring (1998)
2000s - Martyrs (2008)
2010s - The Witch (2015)
Having said all that nuclear holocaust drama Threads (1984) albeit not a "horror" par se is the singular most frightening film ever made. |

"I don’t think the Exorcist can be beat across the decades what a film.
Even the book gave me chills. "
Watched it when I was a kid and it scared me so much that I've never watches it again to this day ! Bloody horrible film |

Like others have said, horrors just dont scare me.
But with some, its down to perspective.
The only horror that scared me was Salems Lot in 1979.
I was about 9yrs old.
The young lad floating and scratching on his mates window was bad enough.
But when the vampires head pops up in the jail cell, it scared me shitless.
But i watched it again last year as a 54yr old, and it did nothing for me.

The blob scared the bejesus out of me as a kid.
Alien gave me sleepless nights as did American werewolf in London.
The grudge on first viewing was scary.
Paranormal stuff used to be scary but it's been done to death ( excuse the pun)
Very few films hold up but the original version of the Haunting in black and white is still a cracker of a film. |

Horror is a bit of a slippery genre to define, isn't it?
1960s - The Innocents
1970s - Don't Look Now
1980s - The Thing
1990s - Silence Of The Lambs (are we counting that as a horror film?)
2000s - Let The Right One In
2010s - Train To Busan
2020s - Last Night In Soho
That's the list for now. It was actually quite hard to come up with, because some decades are crammed full of great horror movies (the 1960s!) and some just aren't (1990s - get Scream away from me, urgh). |

The Innocents is as scary now as it was back then. Eerie and brilliantly filmed. |

Cannibal holocaust was a nasty one indeed, the first time you seen it.
An Italian court tried to charge the director ruggero deodato with murders as they thought it was real.
Part of the actors contract stated that they had to disappear for a year to make it seem authentic and real, obviously they had to break the contract rules and come back. |

Very powerful dippy, people in the 90s loved Blair witch but weren't Aware Cannibal holocaust was the original blueprint for the found footage genre.
But then again it was banned for years,so a lot of people won't have heard of it.
Can you remember maniac dippy?,that was a banned one too. |

The director also got into trouble for killing real animals for filming.
Even today some people believe that some of the killings are real. |

I've not seen that one, will definitely look it up. Kudos, you come across as knowing your stuff! Went through a period of voraciously watching banned films, many of them seem a bit daft now, all about the shock value |

1960s - Probably The Birds if it qualifies
1970s - Halloween
1980s - A nightmare on elm street
1990s - Child's Play 2
2000s - Insidious
Beyond that I don't know, don't watch many modern films and Lucy hates horror |

The animal scenes weren't nice, unescessary suffering.

Oh the acting was Oscar worthy like haha.
Like you I went through a phase,me and me mate had to go to a video stall in a market and ask about the "nasty list" ,you'd think it was top secret, but they were banned, but we could order them as the fella had a list of banned ones that you could order.
I don't think maniac should have been banned, but the bbfc was on a mission to shut as much down as possible. |

"My favorite movie genre ever
60s Rosemary's Baby
70s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
80s The Evil Dead
90s Scream
00s Final Destination
10s American Mary"
I will forever be in the belief that final destination is one of the scariest films purely because it made people physically change their behaviour. I do not drive behind lorries carrying logs. And I know many others who don't.
It scarred a lot of people even though the film itself wasn't that terrifying to watch. |

Admittedly my first came out in the 50’s but it had a real impact on me. Also why I love black and white films
1. Les Diaboliques (50’s) also Night of the Demon
2. Night of the Living Dead (60’s)
3. The Wicker Man (70’s) but would also want Jaws as well.
4. The Vanishing (80’s)
5. Audition (90’s)
6. Eden Lake (2008)

Poltergeist
I watched this film as a young girl, in secret knowing I wasn't allowed. Jesus christ it put the fear of god in me, even to this day I'm frightened watching it and it's not even the scariest film I've seen so I'm putting it down to childhood trauma

Final Destination played on my mind long after closing credits had finished, like you said not actually terrifying but made me think 'Hang On..this could actually happen' as some of deaths were very plausible I feel and certainly were well shot..
The 00's slot was most difficult to pick from tbh and if I had choice of 2 then Saw 2 would have been right up there.. |

Les Diaboliques is absolutely fantastic film. Great to see some love for it.
As is The Wicker Man, which - fun fact - was originally released as a double bill with Don't Look Now. Imagine seeing that at the cinema when they first came out. Incredible.

I remember Mark Kermode mentioning it as the perfect double bill. Unfortunately the poster is one of the worst spoilers in movie history. |
