"There’s so much knowledge and insight in this forum community. Does anybody know the answer:-
If photographs are all rectangular, why are camera lenses circular??" Is it to do with convex and concave i wonder |

"Because a round lense is the best way to focus light"
And the usual subject matter is in more of a panoramic field of view so it makes sense for the film to match that. |

Google this question + eli5 Reddit
We *can* have rectangular lenses but it makes far less practical sense given the way light bends and the manufacturing and assembly of lenses, particularly interchangeable parts.
Add to that how cumbersome and wasteful circular formats would be to produce, e.g. paper, digital screens. |

Lenses are circular in shape because this makes focusing and adjusting focal length (on zoom lenses) much simpler. This is because focusing and zooming requires changing the distance between the various pieces of glass inside the lens. |

"Because the sphincter that opens and closes for exposure has to be round, like an eye.

Thanks dude, this makes a lot of sense. And I guess with the light bending thing (which I’ll never understand - too fick innit) they need to be circular.

Oo you sound like you know what you’re talking about! Tell me more "
A lense works the same way a pupil does, if our pupils weren't round then they wouldn't get the same amount of light |

Because a rectangular lens would cause chromatic aberration and alter the image for the worse, picking up light scatter via the thickness of the edges, round lenses just like the pupil reduce aberrations and give a more focused image and an even distribution of light focus.
