But I look at it from a historical perspective: Long-standing monarchs, significant contributions to world economics, technology, performing arts, and modern democracy. I thank God the English entered some of the wars that they did and had some of the monarchs that they did. Being black, here are a few little-known facts, the first Transatlantic sl@ves were ensl@ved by the Spanish and the Portuguese. The English ( aka the British) were the first to abolish the sl@ve trade. I have dual nationality and National Pride is huge in the non-English one.

"Fascinating thread, Woody! People have made some very insightful and valid comments. I’m proud. I’m proud to be me. I’m proud to have achieved everything I have achieved in life. I’m proud of who I am, what I say and do and what i stand for. But proud of being British? No. Because it’s not an achievement. I was born and raised here and it’s the only language I speak. I’m (relatively) happy here and will probably live here until my body says “oh FFS” and gives up. There are, in fact, many things about this nation of ours that make me embarrassed to be British. As though I’m part of a dysfunctional club run by morons with a great many selfish members insistent on displaying abhorrent behaviour here and abroad. But I just get on with my own life. That the other the other nations in our union celebrate their national heritage, I think, should drive us to do the same. But it’s not about ancient history anymore ie what happened 100 or 1000 years ago. It’s about celebrating our wonderful, diverse culture, heritage, practices and things that make us unique in this little island. Not patriotism, but an inclusive celebration of all that is great about our home. And for that, we absolutely should have a day set aside. " good views.

He wasn't English, he didn't even visit here.. He was adopted by Edward 1st I think as he was a 'good christian', and several other countries also celebrate his birthday.. We should at least have someone born here, Nelson perhaps ..? I vote Bryan Robson. " they have to be dead mate, for at least 200 years.

No, I'm not patriotic. The idea seems like nonsense to me." Doesn't stop me from celebrating my other country. I just book the day off work authorized or unauthorized. Soz. Lol!

Eg - they let me live here and haven’t tried to evict me yet But, I think this week Scotland celebrated or remembered some dude called Burns and we all know how much the Irish enjoy St Guinness day. But England doesn’t ever get a chance to celebrate what is a beuitiful country. It is gorgeous and green and hundreds of years of history. I don’t even know when our day is. Are you patriotic? "Why do you think less people celebrate their Englishness? Because no one likes the English. Maybe because in the past, the media have painted proud patriotic English people as racist. If your proud patriotic and English then surely your a skin head middle aged guy who drinks to much and has joined one of them right (or left) wing political groups BNP, EDL and so on." "I don't know I think it kind of does celebrate itself in a very English way. What about king Charles coronation? Or village fetes or agricultural shows? The masses upon masses of people traipsing around manor houses, castles, where writers and poets lived and were inspired, to areas where the industrial revolution occured or walking along canals. I think the English do celebrate it's heritage and culture,it's just very reserved with a stiff upper lip. Until you ask someone what a roll is then it all becomes a bun fight. . Do you think that could be it? We down play it as if it’s just! We dont need bells and whistles. Who hasn't read or watched a film some form of Shakespeare, Bretrix Potter or Mary Shelly? Or don't recognise some of the English painters such as Turner, Constable or Banksy? And not to mention the English influence on the music scene. I sometimes think the English take these things are normal and don't think to celebrate but they are immersed in it. Well that's my viewpoint as a Cymraes (Welsh woman) in any case. " and the fact that it's all been beautifully preserved for all the tourists from other countries to come and gawk at in relative safety. "Welsh and proper proud and your patron st never visited these shores let alone slay a mighty dragon In fairness i think its the pc brigade and dont offend snowflakes " Proud snowflake here. I try to be politically correct for the simple fact that I have to travel and deal with people internationally. I mean if you live in Middle England and never leave you can say what you like because everyone around you is pretty much like you. Confirmation bias. I know what it's like to a minority and a majority so I prefer to keep a balance between those two perspectives particularly because I work and live in a multi-cultural, multi-national environment. The internet is multi-national and multi-lingual so people understand if you say something that's offensive internationally very easily. They can track you down and ruin your life. There's a documentary about a Chinese man who went to Africa and made the Malawi children say derogatory things about themselves in Chinese to put on Chinese social media. International Social media crushed him very easily faster than they caught most serial killers. It takes a certain kind of person to fail political correctness internationally. Like when Mr. Berlusconi called Mr Obama "tanned"

""I don’t understand this notion of ethnic pride. “Proud to be Irish,” “Puerto Rican pride,” “Black pride.” It seems to me that pride should be reserved for accomplishments; things you attain or achieve, not things that happen to you by chance. Being Irish isn’t a skill; it’s genetic. You wouldn’t say, “I’m proud to have brown hair,” or “I’m proud to be short and stocky.” So why the fuck should you say you’re proud to be Irish? I’m Irish, but I’m not particularly proud of it. Just glad! Goddamn glad to be Irish!" - George Carlin" George Carlin: Straight? Monogamous? White? Boomer? Lived his whole life as a majority? Male? "We're meant to be proud of being British but we're not allowed to show it in any way not even a union jack or St George's flag. Imagine telling an American that there not allowed to fly there flag Unfortunately every time I've put up a flag to support sports teams like England in football. I've been asked to take it down, I even had one ripped off my car years ago. There's flags everywhere, there's at least half a dozen where we live within a cpl of miles and that's just on the main roads.. My father in law has one down south.." Who's told someone to take down their flags in the UK? I mean I've lived in Southwest London for over 10 years and we put all our flags up.... If you look at some of the London Tower blocks, You've got English, Jamaican, Brazilian, French and Italian etc. all in the windows. You've got the Rainbow flag as well. No-one bats an eyelid I'm Caribbean heritage and no one would thing of going to Caribbean Carnival without your flag! And that's every Caribbean carnival I've been to all over the UK ( Nottingham, Derby, Leicester, London) and in America.( New York, Miami, Boston) what was that about telling you to take down the team flag? I mean to be fair I won't take the Chelsea club flag into a Millwall pub but out in regular public what's wrong with showing it? It's a club or national representation. Now if it's radicalized and against the law ok but if it's not...live and let live.

"I've never felt the need to be proud of being English based in being born here. Certainly I find it more often embarrassing or depressing to be English and or British. That said I do find it sad that I think when many people think of celebrating St George's day the thoughts often go to nationalists rather than any real celebration of heritage. We've lost our way. " Sorry to hear that. You see amongst my friends and family I'm the limey/English one ( they rarely use British)..I'm a bit of a novelty and they can't understand why I get so angry about tea. It's good entertainment when we all get together. We have ago at the leaders of all three countries. Mate From 1066 to 2023 of solid political stability apart from the 9 years of the English Civil War is nothing to be sniffed at nor an Empire that the Sun never set on. England is one of the longest-running national states in the world when everyone else was organized into small tribes and principalities. The British Empire was bigger than the empire that Genghis Khan ruled. Probably just as brutal but still impressive. That's what I think about when I think about the English. Think about what happens when one doesn't have pride/esteem in oneself and one doesn't care about oneself.. I could be wrong but I suspect a similar thing happens when there is no national identity, no national pride, no national care, and no national desire to make the country better.

"Not proud to be English, not proud to be an Indian, etc. Just trying hard to be a good human being. " That works too hun! From my mental health perspective, I think people should have an identity and celebrate it regardless of what it is. that's how I can be proud to be cis-hetero, female, black, British- Afro Caribbean, Christian, Solo Polyamorous Swinger and still get along with and celebrate people who are the complete opposite to me. That's why I'm Maverick. For my neurodivergent brain, variety and all little small good bits about people and life make it all worth it. No one needs to change who they are and where they are unless it's causing serious harm to themselves or others. Things and places can be replaced but not people.

"I am tempted to post something I just posted in the "Harry" thread! I think Shakespeare says it perfectly in Henry V, when its the dawn before battle and he is preparing his troops for the battle of Agincourt. In fact, sod it, read or do not, its up to you.... What’s he that wishes so? My cousin Westmoreland? No, my fair cousin: If we are mark’d to die, we are enow To do our country loss; and if to live, The fewer men, the greater share of honour. God’s will! I pray thee, wish not one man more. By Jove, I am not covetous for gold, Nor care I who doth feed upon my cost; It yearns me not if men my garments wear; Such outward things dwell not in my desires: But if it be a sin to covet honour, I am the most offending soul alive. No, faith, my coz, wish not a man from England: God’s peace! I would not lose so great an honour As one man more, methinks, would share from me For the best hope I have. O, do not wish one more! Rather proclaim it, Westmoreland, through my host, That he which hath no stomach to this fight, Let him depart; his passport shall be made And crowns for convoy put into his purse: We would not die in that man’s company That fears his fellowship to die with us. This day is called the feast of Crispian: He that outlives this day, and comes safe home, Will stand a tip-toe when the day is named, And rouse him at the name of Crispian. He that shall live this day, and see old age, Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours, And say ‘To-morrow is Saint Crispian:’ Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars. And say ‘These wounds I had on Crispin’s day.’ Old men forget: yet all shall be forgot, But he’ll remember with advantages What feats he did that day: then shall our names. Familiar in his mouth as household words Harry the king, Bedford and Exeter, Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester, Be in their flowing cups freshly remember’d. This story shall the good man teach his son; And Crispin Crispian shall ne’er go by, From this day to the ending of the world, But we in it shall be remember’d; We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; For he to-day that sheds his blood with me Shall be my brother; be he ne’er so vile, This day shall gentle his condition: And gentlemen in England now a-bed Shall think themselves accursed they were not here, And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks That fought with us upon Saint Crispin’s day. " Your point?

"I'm English/Welsh, but I'm proud to be British. Yes, we've done some horrible things in our past, but those horrible things often led to the acquisition of great wealth. With it, we built, amongst other things, hospitals and universities. These seats of learning and research have led to the creations and inventions of things, without which, the world would be a very different place. Penicillin, for example, acknowledged to be the greatest medical advancement in human history, has saved millions upon millions of lives around the world. Similarly, Joseph Lister's discovery of antiseptic properties and usage. You don't have to be a flag waving patriot to be proud of the accomplishments of your country, and your part in it." See, the penicillin example always irks me (sorry!) Alexander Fleming (Scottish) sort of discovered penicillin, by being a very untidy scientist. He'd initially discarded the plate with the famous mould on it, and it was one of his students who took a closer look and pointed out the area of exclusion around the mould. Fleming tried briefly and unsuccessfully to isolate whatever the mould was secreting but was unsuccessful and he did almost nothing more with it after that. The paper he published in 1926 garnered little interest too, and that was that. It wasn't until 1937 that Ernst Chain (born German, naturalised British) and Howard Florey (Australian) read about penicillin and it was them who took it from a laboratory curiosity to the purified medical product that could be used in humans. How many Brits know anything about Ernst Chain and Howard Florey? Their contribution to the development of penicillin as an actual functioning drug was far greater than Fleming's.... *Off microbiological soapbox* Sorry

"I'm always surprised when people say they can't fly an English flag or it's racist to say they're English. Even saying they will get thrown in jail, apparently! If more people celebrated their Englishness in wholesome ways, then people wouldn't automatically link the St George's flag with BNP, EDL and the like. Not all English flag wavers are racist, just look at Last Night of the Proms. There's nothing wrong with being proud of your national identity or culture, just don't let it slide into jingoism and ultra nationalism. Gbat But. … but….but…. Other countries are encouraged to do it on one day. They literally put one day to one side, and have national holidays. Why do they and we don’t? We could have garden parties. Most other countries do it for Revolution (Bastille Day) or Independence (from the British, Spanish, Portuguese Empires) day. England hasn't had a revolution or been invaded for a long time." England could celebrate the day it became quasi-French by celebrating the Battle of Hastings on 14 October? I'm sure F&B would be happy to assist in a spot of light re-enactment. Who wants to be King Harold and to take one in the eye?

You usually have a American flag flying with others. It's strange to alot of foreigners. " Those of us from the Caribbean always fly both flags where ever we roam and we identify each other easily from the flags too especially at Carnivals around the world. I go to a soca/calypso club night every month and it's not uncommon to see someone with a London/British accent flying a Jamaican flag with another Caribbean nationality. So they have one parent that is Jamaican and maybe the other parent is from Dominica, Barbados, Trinidad.

"For its faults and we are constantly reminded of them, I believe in this country’s greatness. I’m very patriotic to the good people of this country, to its institutions less so. There’s a beating heart of honesty, transparency, inventiveness, open-mindedness that attracts many to live here. I’m proud of that and for the country I think it could be I would fight to protect it. Hades x" Yup! All of that along with nationally subsided college, uni and apprenticeships and free healthcare! (take notes USA) I wouldn't be alive if it were not for the English university system. I'm so relieved I went to uni in the East Midlands. Not super expensive like London and not restrictive like I found the American system. Educate your population and take care of your population's physical and mental health. "I don't know I think it kind of does celebrate itself in a very English way. Bap fight. In the American south it's a muffin or a biscuit. Lord help us. "St George has no connection to England, or any part of the UK. From t'internet....... "Very little is known about George's life, but it is thought he was a Roman officer of Greek descent who was martyred in one of the pre-Constantinian persecutions. Historically, the countries of England, Ukraine, Ethiopia, and Georgia, as well as Catalonia and Aragon in Spain, and Moscow in Russia, have claimed George as their patron saint". If you're into celebrating ancient Christians for patriotic purposes it would make far more sense to celebrate St Hilda, who was actually from here. " . So now that we know St George is the patron Saint of more than just England how do we feel about sharing with the other countries as stated above.

"Why do you think less people celebrate their Englishness? Because no one likes the English. Maybe because in the past, the media have painted proud patriotic English people as racist. If your proud patriotic and English then surely your a skin head middle aged guy who drinks to much and has joined one of them right (or left) wing political groups BNP, EDL and so on. Never felt that way about patriotism...but I'm black, a dual citizen and a globalist... I attend family meeting telephone group with family members in 4 different countries. National politics bores the hell out of me and feels myopic. I understand it. I studied it but things like pandemics, global war, global climate collapse, global economic collapse, and universal international human rights hold my attention more. every country has good and bad points and that special gloriousness that makes them unique adn should be celebrated. I'll start tea. I doff my cap to you. " Thank you. I'm thinking of how to smuggle tea into the USA in my cap on the next trip there to see family.

Why do you think less people celebrate their Englishness? Gbat Why did I forget about the Welsh? I don’t know, I really do t get why it’s such a small thought for country that thinks it’s influence is world wide. Um because historically the influence has been world wide. I'm keeping bread pudding, tea, Parliament, English language, Christmas Goose and my A-levels in my travels. I grew up with that BBC beep on the World News radio. It was the only way we knew what was going on in the outside world because my parents only had one TV channel! You can keep liver and onions, institutional racism, the BNP, Brexit and BoJo. "More embarrassed then proud to be honest" I don't have this problem. The Continental Europeans, Asians, Americas and Africans love me. Lol! Maybe because I'm black, female and attempt to speak their language. And I don't get d*unk and run around their town in my pants attempting to shag a lamp post. In all fairness, I tend to go to remote places where they've never met a black person or a typical bad-behave English tourist so it's all good. It's a fair exchange, I behave myself, and they look after me and don't try to lynch me. Sir I though you would know this being older than me. Then again into everyone is a history geek like me. Imagine telling an American that there not allowed to fly there flag Yes them are fighting words I will fight over tea. I am decidedly British when it comes to tea. I was calmly minding my own business on holiday with the American Fam and they tried to give me American "tea" for BREAKFAST.......I swear I had a rage attack. Luckily I didn't go down to the Harbour and tip the whole lot in. Yes, I was in Boston, Massachusetts. I'm taking my own teabags next time. I'm British and not a morning person...woe betides the person who trifles with me before I've had a cup of STRONG ENGLISH BREAKFAST TEA WITH MILK AND SUGAR/sweetener. One poor young lad from the Baltic countries tried to get me to stop drinking my tea at work before 7am because my shift started at 6.15 am. Luckily his parents didn't have to ship his body back via the Baltic from the look I gave him. He never mentioned it again. One Tanzanian lad tried to give me Chai for BREAKFAST...he had a chai-coloured carpet after. Boston is famous for its tea...... I don't drink tea or see the fascination with it but i am English and proud to be English although i have a French name " Clearly, my relatives ( aka sibling) in America never got the memo...Boston is famous for throwing the tea in the harbour..not drinking it. Lol! And that my friends is how Americans switched from tea to coffee and coca cola. Lol! They threw all the decent tea in the harbour after getting fed up with the British/English taxes on tea from bloody India. Coffee and Coca grows better in the Americas.
