Footballs White Card

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

Football history was made on Saturday when a white card was brandished for the first time in a professional game in Portugal.

Fans are used to red and yellow cards for fouls and misdemeanours during a match, having been implemented over 50 years ago at the 1970 World Cup.

Portugal has now introduced a third colour as part of a series of new initiatives in the country.

And it was used for the first time during women's cup match between Sporting Lisbon and Benfica in Lisbon.

It came after someone on the bench in the dugouts reportedly fell unwell at the end of the first-half.

Medical staff from both teams quickly went to their aid with referee Catarina Campos showing it to members of both sides' medical teams, prompting a warm reception from fans.

The card can be shown to recognise and encourage fair play and is designed to 'improve ethical value in the sport'.

The move is part of a new initiative in Portugal to encourage sides to act in a sporting manner and receive instant recognition for their positive actions.

The white card provides immediate recognition for a positive act during a football match.

The initiative isn't widespread just yet and is currently consigned to Portugal, but it's part of a wider series of new introductions in football.

Do think we'll see it used in the Premier League?

Discuss......

I can’t see how it could be used over here, our benches all tend to be fighting haha! However, when we have seen unfortunate circumstances on the pitch, both teams’ medical staff have always leapt into action, whether a player, official or fan in the stands!

It would be a nice addition, but probably wouldn’t get used the correct way, just like VAR.

Should be a green card to go and chill out for 5 minutes and calm down. Not backing away after a foul, throwing the ball away, having a go at the ref. Use it to get a grip on discipline.

I probably have to read the OP again but it seems a bit daft. Why not wave it at the fans if they're singing is nice

Has it got to the point that football is that badly behaved that they need to pat people on the back?

I’m in no way a football fan so maybe I’m not the best person to comment but my only thought is whether it would interrupt the flow of play ? Nice to see otherwise

think the game has already done that to itself, pricing themselves out of market, cheating on the pitch etc etc penalties i mean whats that all about

What market has football priced itself out of?

So is it meant to be kind of a positive reinforcement when it's shown? I can't see it taking off if there's no general benefit to it being shown

The white card doesn't interrupt play, it's just shown to recognise a sporting action, as in the Portugal game in the OP.

At that point, the game had already stopped.

As soon as I saw it OP I just thought they may as well raise the white flag and be done with it.

Play the goddamn game and stop involving other daft things in it

Brilliant idea. I love the concept of rewarding the good as well as punishing the bad.

They need to somehow work out how recognition equates to pounds to make it work in the pro game.

On the down side its another thing for refs to get wrong and be criticised for but the principle is a good one.

That makes more sense, so just an acknowledgement of something fair/sporting from the ref ?

Although I think it’s a ridiculous idea the only way I could see it working over here is if it was incentivised. I’m sure you used to get a back door into the Intertoto Cup for fair play. Win that and you got to the Europa League. If they did something similar then it could work.

Yeah, so they do like a fair play league as well which grants access to the conference league or something

They use fair play in the World Cup, group stage, if teams are on same points, same goal difference and so on.

This isn't that though I don't think, could be, I'm confused by it.

Although it wouldn’t help with the antics of the “big 6” the less successful clubs would probably take fair play a lot more seriously.

Wow never heard of this, is there any actual benefit? I suppose in the case of eriksen it could be used to alert staff/medical team to a situation, but then i suppose in the highest level of the sport theres enough cameras and trained staff anyway. Cant really see its introduction myself. Much prefer an "orange" card for a 10 min sin bin or whatever....

I can’t really complain. Our captain has been booked twice this season in games he hasn’t even played

Hillsborough, NI

interesting topic to bring up, i hadn't heard of the white card.

I will raise similar point as to what will it result in? Perhaps someone on a yellow card could do a good sporting deed and have it cancelled out by a white card?

As others have discussed already, perhaps a table showing counts off white cards which then convert into some advantage at some stage

Maybe if teams start to take pride in being shown a white card for good sportsmanship there'll be more sportsmanship in the game.

It's certainly gone missing the last few years....

The ref has enough to do with the complications of the modern game without this. Sides wouldn't see any value either unless it gained some advantage. For example if a side got 3 white cards would it wipe out a yellow. Thus could prevent a red or match ban. Then the cheating would start around the white card. Leave it in Portuguese games but not over here.

I suspect you missed when the white card is shown.

It's not a complication, there's no "rule" around when it gets shown and by the looks of the trial it doesn't impact on play.

Seems to be entirely discretionary as to when the ref uses it.

And then the ref chooses player of the day and gives them a tube of jaffa cakes.
