"My elderly neighbour had one that was over 60. They are quite good at escaping."
I heard that also who'd have thought it.
Expensive to buy. I've been told they're fussy eaters nowadays. Maybe that was the pet shop looking to sell their posh tortoise nosh .
And remember, a tortoise isn't just for Christmas....it'll probably outlive you ! |

I used to work in a place that had bunch of what I thought were tortoises but were actually terrapins (I'm still not sure what the difference is)
Either way they used to love trying to make a break for it across the lawns, it was funny... You'd come across what you thought was a weird rock right at the edge of the garden only to discover it had legs and a head.
I loved those little guys. |

Mr KC's family had one that lived to be over 100. It was passed down the generations and did escape and go missing, presumed lost, for about 2yrs when Mr KC's mum was a child. He re-emerged (the tortoise) and went back into the family. |

I do love the idea of a pet being passed to new generations. The worst part of having cats or dogs is knowing you will have to say adios. |

Unless your children don't want the responsibility. |

Just write them out of your will then and give it to a friend. |

They're rarely kept the way they used to be when I was a kid.
Now you have them indoors with heat and they dont hibernate.
My neighbour has two and they still hibernate theirs. Always a risk they wont wake in the spring. |

"I had one as a kid, my Nan found it walking up the road and gave it to my parents, alas he died in hibernation one year.
Blue Peter the TV show had a tortoise too
My mums cousin has them, has a special fridge in the garage she puts them in to hibernate!
They are chilling until warmer weather arrives. Wish I could hibernate! "

I've had terrapins, so here's the difference
Tortoise: does not swim, feet and claws
Terrapin: walks on land and swims, webbed feet and claws. Swims and sunbathes on the rocks.
Turtle: Slides on stomach has flippers, spends most of the time swimming |

Fred turned out to be a girl, as it's hard to sex them, so the added another letter to his name. |
