Things I grew up with being the norm
Jump to: Newest in thread
A recent thread on consent and a comment brought back a memory of something I grew up with seeing as the norm.
A guy and a girl are arguing, he grabs her and starts to kiss her, she resists, tries to fight him off before succumbing to his irresistible charm. Seems crazy these days but as a kid you could see how this could be perceived as just the way it works, taking that dangerous view into adulthood.
So what other outrageous things seen as the norm did you grow up seeing? |

Seen that just the other night on 'Gangs of New York'. And a kiss always leads to sex on films. |

"Realising that it is ok for men, including supervisors, to address my tits in every conversation but do they answer them back? "
I’m guessing that they started the conversation in the first place…. |

"Realising that it is ok for men, including supervisors, to address my tits in every conversation
That never happens to me as they’re normally talking to the top of my head
#midgetproblems"
As a twenty-something i used to stand in front of an engineer who salivated, licking his disgusting lips as he literally undressed me in the office, as I stood in front of him with my arms crossed at an unnatural height in front my boobs to try to stop him... A few times i was brave enough to gesture and say, my face is up here
It was really horrible |

Casual homophobia. Saying something like "that's gay as fuck" to a mate was a normal thing but would be pretty horrified if I heard anyone say it now and it's definitely for the better. |

It really is a disgusting thing to do but then I’m afraid some people can never be told that their actions are absolutely vile. I tend to find those people have a harder time in life than us good people. Which always makes me smile xx |

Along similar lines getting cat called most days pretty much as soon as I started high school. Never knew how to handle that it was totally normal then (early 80’s)
When I started work uniforms were always skirts/dresses for women even if the job involved up and down step ladders and lifting stuff about. Office jobs even, not allowed to wear trousers and even having to wear heels - one place a min height of 3” this was late 80’s and early 90’s utterly ridiculous!
Don’t even get me started on horrible interview questions that were illegal I was still being asked well into this century. |

Your kind of experiences have shaped me into the person I am today, when I was a child my mum was a model and the lecherous behaviour she got from every man we bumped into was terrible. It's not ok, but some of the messages my lady fab friends receive says things aren't that different, they're just less likely to do it face to face. |

About 3 feet away from the fence |
People actually having a genuine fist fight to settle disputes.
These days many men are scared to get punched in their face & prefer to hide behind a gang/weapons, or wage wars from their computer screen. Men are brought up to be soft cowards now. |

I looked at your age before posting
I am quite a bit older than you having left school in the 1970’s and attending many demonstrations and rallies to decriminalise homosexuality. I and many of my friends were NOT ALLOWED to be gay. A good friend who sadly took his own life had gender surgery and was punished through the ‘justice’ system and spent time in a male prison. So please embrace those terms, phrases and quotes. You are allowed to be gay as whatever.
Not having a go at you. Just wanted to share |

Having to walk through one of the most heavily fortified checkpoints in Europe going to and from school.
Allowing 45 minutes to travel the 3 miles to work because of the above.
Scr*ping the ice off the inside of the bedroom window every morning.
Taking the cream off the top of the milk bottle before pouring. |

I think you misunderstand.
The poster isn't talking about people celebrating being gay.
He's talking about the homophobic situations where someone sees something they don't like or disagree on and openly, outwardly declare it 'gay as fuck' as a negative. |
