You out driving,it's nighttime, a narrow country back road and you see a car approaching, it very kindly pulls in so you can pass....
How to you say thank you, flash your lights?
Beep your horn or something else.
What is the correct way to acknowledge them? |

Don’t acknowledge, just continue on your way.
At the most, I’d lift my fingers at the steering wheel to gesture. I don’t like flashing main beams at people when it’s dark. |

I would feel rude if I didn't offer an acknowledgement though, most roads round here are only just over a car wide and there are many people that don't pullin and make you reverse half way up the road so you can let them by and don't say thank you, that aggravates me,politeness costs nothing |

"I’d flash lights once
That's what I currently do, then wondered if people feel annoyed that I temporarily blind them with my full beam!"
It’s what I’ve always done and people mostly do the same. I’d do two if I was letting someone go, and one for a thank you |

It used to wind me up too, but I found I was arriving at destinations with rage and high blood pressure. I much prefer people to just get on with their journey, and not waste time slowing to try and catch my eyeline to ‘thank’ me. |

"its the right thing to do a quick flash,,thats not being rude
I've seen some flick on their hazards as a thank you or beep their horn and just wondered what most other people do"
I know what you mean. Id give my hazards a flash or raise my hand as thanks as i pass |

I'd go with either of those two. I have an eye condition which means one of my eyes doesn't adjust as rapidly as the other. A flash of full beam really blinds me |

Maybe I should apply that logic to all the people who annoy me,just let them go about their day rather than spend the next ten minutes swearing about them after the encounter.

At night, instead of flashing my headlights, I briefly turn them off and back on again to avoid blinding the person I’m trying to thank.
Down to sidelights that is, not completely off. |

Good idea.
I just raise my hand, I know they can't see me but the intent is there |

What is the correct way to acknowledge them? " instead of flashing my lights and blinding them with full beam i prefer to flick my lights to side lights then back onto normal beam once i have passed them,,, on a narrow country lane you might just dazzle them long enough to cause them to clip a grass bank or go off the side of the road into a ditch,,, |

I did also wonder if there were 'rules' about this too |

"I slow down, open the window and pass them a pork pie. That way you will have good luck for the rest of the day
Can I just give them a slice otherwise it could be a costly thank you!"
No |

That really annoys me I'm afraid. I struggle with unlit roads and to be temporarily blinded means I'll take even longer to pass the vehicle. In which case I can wind down the window and actually thank the other driver! |

Yeh flick the lights really.. I like to switch to parking light and back to normal beams so I don't blind them as ya say.. but I guess its nice to acknowledge that they pulled in for you anyway.. so beep, flash the lights, dim your lights.. try wave even lol |

If it's dark I give them one quick flash of the full-beam headlights. If it's daytime I do the same followed by holding up my hand to them as I pass. |

"its the right thing to do a quick flash,,thats not being rude"
No, it isn't. If caught doing so by a traffic officer you can be prosecuted for an offence - most likely 'due care and attention to other road users'
What you believe is a harmless gesture could dazzle the oncomming driver and cause them to veer off the road.
As the Highway code - which is a lay persons guide to the road traffic act - states the flashing of headlights or the sounding of the horn should ONLY be used to alert another road user if your presence.

If you flash your headlamps to let someone out of a side road or similar, if they pull out and are involved in a collision, because of your gesture, you can be held responsible for the incident. The best thing to do in such cases is to perhaps remain stationary and let them judge if it's safe to proceed |

In the daylight I will put my hand up as an acknowledgement...Night time I just keep going and let them continue. As said above you should only flash your lights to alert other road users of your presence.
