Yeah I don’t like the monarchy. People say we need them because they support tourism but tourists would still visit Buckingham palace and tower of London the same way they visit the palace of Versailles. Also, their power isn’t just ceremonial. The queen vetoed lots of laws during her reign and hid her finances from the public, plus the pm has to consult them before laws are signed and meet to discuss things. They have more power in the government than they let on |

I don’t remember the queen vetoing any laws and a quick google shows the last time a monarch vetoed a law was in 1708.

British exceptionalism, especially in the political arena.
Does our political system embody chastity, temperance, charity, diligence, kindness, patience, and humility ?
No.
Therefore our political system is not virtuous.
Until it is, we will not be governed virtuously.
So that's a very clear goal.
Demand that the system you elect to govern you, is virtuous and hold it to those ideals.
If they do not embody those ideals, then change your vote. |

You mean, apart from the many occasions she got her estates excluded from environmental protection legislation, and herself excluded from equal opportunities legislation so she didn’t have to see too many non-white faces on the palace staff?
You won’t find overt examples of this happening in the political records, because we aren’t talking about the monarch marching into parliament and saying “No” anymore- it’s dodgy back-room agreements that aren’t recorded, but still result in the wording of many and various acts of parliament being quietly reworded to give exemptions and exclusions for Crown Property etc. |

It really isn't. I've lived and worked in some right shit holes and this isn't one. Has it got issues? Yup, every where does. But I feel like people want to the UK to fail so they can blame the Tories. And for the record I believe the same would be true if Labour were in charge.
Just to note I'm not British although I've lived here for over 10 years now.

The public school system, that in reality is a private system, trained people to be colonial administrators in empire controlled countries.
The nasty condescending attitude to foreigners that they were imbued with persists to this day, even though the heyday of the British Empire is a very distant memory.
They truly believe that they were born to control manipulate and rule lesser mortals, that until 1922 including Ireland. |
