Experiment with different breads. Sourdough bread makes really nice toast, but takes longer than normal sliced bread. I'm sure there's a scientific reason, but I just know it tastes good. |

Shut the front door!? 55 years on God's green earth and I never knew this sorry to say it my friend but you are a fellow plum xx"
It is not the first time that observation has been made and I would stake my house on it not being the last.
In my defence I don't eat bread! |

Exactly. Pumpernickel takes even longer. Especially from frozen. On at 5 twice. Takes real patience. |

Never knew that either, and I eat loads of bread! But I’m young still. |

Unless yours is a timer toaster the numbers do not refer to minutes dear plumettes, here is some science. Most home toasters are what's called "capacitor" toasters. These work by sending a current through the circuit- via the heating elements- to charge up a central capacitor. When that's fully charged- up pops your toast. With these models, the numbers refer to the resistance rate. The higher this is, the longer it takes for the capacitor to charge, and therefore the longer your toast stays in for |

"Our toaster goes up to nine! God knows what type of bread needs nine minutes
The numbers aren't minutes !
Are they shades of brown?"
I guess in effect. As said they represent the heat/energy the bread will be exposed to, but that will vary between each toaster. Presumably a 1-10 scale is meant to give greater control ? |

It doesn't give me greater control I still have to keep checking ??. I still pine for the overhead grills on the 1970s cookers. |
