So Gareth Bale has retired from international and club football after 17 years in the game...
I remember watching him playing for Southampton when he was a young lad and never thought he would go on to have such a successful career....
Do you think he could have achieved even more if hadn't wasted the last few years at Real Madrid?...
Will he be remembered as a football legend of the game for what he achieved especially for Wales?....

Best player we have ever had play for our country, the most loyal and the most incredible role model throughout his career setting an incredible example.
I saw us in three major tournaments which I never thought would happen and he had a gigantic part to play in it all.
I will never see another Welsh player like him in my lifetime.

I think he could have achieved even more if had left Madrid sooner and come back to the Premier league... |

I'm hoping he buys Tan out of Cardiff.
In regards to achieving more if he'd come back to the prem he was under contract at Madrid but I totally agree. He couldnt just leave and no one at the time could afford to buy him out of it.
At his peak he was almost keeping company with Ronaldo and Messi, it was a short period though.
Zidane treated him like shit, he did nothing wrong, he even did interviews in Spanish. |

Yes they can, does it happen often, not really. Deschamps is an example I can give. He's won the Workd Cup as a player and manager and lost in the Final again this year. |

Pep is the obvious other example but the fact that they are rare proves my point. The reality is that you want a second rate player/journeyman who has had to work hard at keeping up with the best and so has had to think about what is needed - Klopp, Mourinho etc.
The one player who does spring to mind who _might_ be able to make it is Gerrard if he can bounce back from the Villa experience. |

You get the chance to be world class every 4 years.

Wales have only qualified for those tournaments when the numbers have been expanded so it's hard to compare with previous generations. In the 1962 World Cup there were only 16 teams for example. Personally I think the Rush, Hughes, Southall era teams were probably your greatest and certainly would have qualified for big tournaments in the current era. |

Although it lacked the cohesion of the more recent Wales teams. I agree it's easier to qualify... However they did very well when they were there (euros)
Would John Charles be the greatest ever Welsh player? I hear such great things about him.
Bale stood up repeatedly when he was needed. That is what makes him one of the greats imo.
I wouldn't touch him as a manger tho ! |

Brilliant player and probably under appreciated by Real Madrid. He may not have achieved more had he left a few years earlier as there aren't many places going from Madrid that's a step up.
He's a legend for Real though, scoring the winning goals to win La Decima in his first season and the three-peat and think he'll be remembered for that more than with Wales despite leading them to the Euros Semi final and the World Cup.
Personally, I'll always remember when he announced himself as an absolute beast with his Hat-trick for Spurs against Inter, leaving Maicon for dead |

He was skinning everyone from his own half it probably made more sence to play him further up the pitch.
His attacking was always better than his defending |

His love of playing for wales and what he did for us will never be forgotten. Never had the most talented squad but the passion he showed would have filtered through to the rest of the squad.
Best ever in my lifetime. Probably only one to rival him was John Charles but that was before my time |

I don't think it was respectful to his employers to pose and post the message Wales, golf, Madrid. What did he think would be the outcome of that unnecessary gesture?
I don't think is mysterious "injuries" that kept him from training and playing for real but miraculously didn't prevent him from playing for Wales was a good idea.
And I don't think him and his agent picking fights with real and the Spanish media was good advice. Basically played golf for his last 2 seasons while they paid him 600k a week...
So yeah.. I think somewhat misguided. . But amazing record for everything before that. |

He certainly seemed to spur the Welsh team on. But... His choices to prep for the world Cup weren't great which evidenced in his last few performances. Which is a shame to go out like that considering performances in the qualification campaign. |

He stood next to the flag that read WALES. GOLF. MADRID just after the final whistle. He was made to be the scapegoat of Real Madrids failings and ZZ wouldn't pick him. He started giving back to the fans and press what they were giving him. Standing up for himself.
He never lost the respect of the players or fell out with them!
He never once made himself unavailable for Madrid to play golf and was always treated with respect by Wales when getting over an Injury eg, given little game time if recovering.
I've not read anything saying he didn't turn up for training and instead played golf. When told he wasn't in the squad he played golf as he didn't have to travel with the rest of the club to a game, perhaps. He probably flew home to Cardiff most of the time.
No one could afford him so didn't come in for him during the hard years, he was desperate to get out but why should he buy himself out of his contract?
Zidane left and he started playing again which was why he signed his contract in the first place.
Misguided |

Interesting that Ronaldo, Modric and Benzema all won the Balon D'Or but Bale never even made the top 3. I think that's about right, he was a spectacular player who gave Real Madrid another level but not one you'd ever build your team around like the true greats. I certainly don't think he's in the top ten of all time British players. |

About 3 feet away from the fence |
This seemingly came out the blue
Is he retiring due to injury? At 33 years old you would think he'd still have a good 2-3 more years at a decent level.
That American team who just signed him for big money can't be happy about this. |

He was only on a 12 month contract and the MLS season is over. It might not be too bad for them. |
