Gas bill. Wow.

Just had our gas bill.

It was £430 for end of Sept to end of Dec. Same time last year we paid £270.

Abit of a shock coming so soon after Xmas. Had some money left aside to pay it as we knew it was going to be high.

Has yours increased as much?

We are both in jobs and have some savings but feel sorry for the people that will really struggle.

Over £500 a month for gas and leccy. Scary and unsubstainable.

I know the cap increased Jan 1st too. I can only hope we are over the coldest spell and hope it will go down in the warmer months. My heating is on minimal anyway, dryer is banned (by me), so it's only showers, cooking and washing up. I do.use the economy cycle on the dishwasher.

don't get me started on this one

they have about 5 or 6 hundred quid in credit, I'm on a quaterly DD, and they send me random red demands.

Confused dot com.

But I do put the boiler on now and again, for medical reasons.

That's a ridiculous amount, unless you have a ginormous house with no windows - is that based on actual or estimated readings ?

I know its expensive I was blown away, but im ok I can pay the bill and I have no aliments or machines that others who are ill depend on to be just able to survive and keep them in their homes and not hospital.

Man im lucky I do not need to choose between food and heat, its a small club we are in but its not my fault I can afford it.

Me too and if I want to use it enough to have a really warm house more like £15-£20 a day

I was having this conversation recently too. With just interest rate rises and utilities my monthly costs increased £700. That’s not even adding on retail, food or diesel.

I’m lucky in that it just means £700 less into pension/savings but if this was 20 years ago earlier in my career when I had young kids I would have probably lost the house

Worthing

I keep a weekly usage cost spreadsheet for gas and electric (won't have a smart meter). Doed not pay bill but helps plan finances. Mild weather means gas not as bad as it could be. I don't really feel the cold but fear for those that do.

It is forecast OFGEM will lower the price slightly in Summer (when we dont need it) in anticipation of another huge increase in October and next January. Lucky they are on our side or where would we be?!

Actual not estimated, and a normal average house.

Serious question, but what happens currently if people can't afford to pay? I'm lucky that I currenyly can but not that many years ago I wouldnt have heen able to and there must be plenty of people in that position now.

Are they being cut off? Threatened with debt collectors? Does anyone have first hand knowledge?

Its a terrible situation to be in and my heart goes out to anyone who is.

If you're on monthly they come round and put metres in if you're in debt

Nothing happens actually. With shell I have 2 accounts / 2 properties , one hasn’t been paid for over two years and one gets the odd £25 every 2-3 months. I have the money to pay but am refusing to pay and letting it earn interest.

They haven’t contacted me for payment at all. It’s impossible to cut supply in the uk. They have to apply to county county and win a case first then issue a warrant to install a pre-payment meter which then collects the debt by inflating the unit price , I’m not sure but I don’t think new warrants can be granted while unit prices are already so high and being capped

Read in the paper last week that a guy had requested his meter get tested for accuracy.

Turns out his meter is running over 10% fast and he is getting all the cash he overpaid backdated and paid back.

its about 20 years of over payments because of a faulty meter.

Ive requested my meter gets tested and the earliest appointment is Monday 20th February. seems its a common things for meters to run fast and people over pay.

that’s shocking!

I know a few that run slow , in the utilities sector it’s common for the executives to get engineers on ‘Saturday mornings’ to tap off supply before the meter to direct energy to heated pools, saunas etc

I'm too scared to look!

Seriously tho I must look into it - last monthly DD I noticed was £129 - now considering I don't have any central heating of any sort - I don't even have any hot water - so I'm struggling to see how a WiFi router, fridge/freezer and a handful of kettle boils a day comes to £129!!!

I am on estimated monthly reading from EON.My bill for November was £249 but minus the £67 deduction from the government meant I payed £182.EON came and read the meters end of November and when my December bill arrived it was for a credit of roughly £189 and if they include the £67 from the government so no bill for December and possibly January as well with the credit I have.

Its tough for us.

We dont spend much and both have jobs.

Cant imagine what its like for the unemployed,on benefits, elderly and people that need medical equipment to live or maintain a half decent life.

As always the Tory doing nothing about it.

The other day I was at the local tip and saw a few hot tubs dumped in the skips. Must cost a bomb to run those now.

Do you have any heating at all?

Is it a massive kettle?

Heating is old school - a fire (which heats the water too)
