Do you use cash or credit card when paying?

From the land of haribos.

I like to use both, but I recently started to just use cash, because you notice that the money goes quicker and you are generally more aware of how much you have and have left than by using a credit card

i was in tesco (not an unsual event) and noticed not only the self check out but the manned checkouts were turning all card only.. guess it speeds up the process no change etc?

i am a self confessed luddite(maybe i hate tractors) but i did wonder in 2022/23 - who uses cash ?

i get it if your at the pub as its a great way to literally control the purse strings and maybe a barber shop or taxi - cause you end up tipping and say keep the change to make yourself feel marginally better and generous for giving someone 29p.. but the weekly shop? petrol? buying a new shirt?

I literally use my credit card for everything possible. I’ve read too many articles professing that credit is the safest and most financially viable way of spending, especially when you get a percentage back every month and your usually more covered as a consumer. Not all cards give a percentage back but you also don’t want to leave free money on the table if possible. Obviously I pay it off every month and look after my spending habits as well.

Don't really used either much now, pretty much everything is by phone app. I haven't used cash at all for a few years, i dont carry any with me. Last thing was car parking many years ago. Cleaner, Lawn man, Gardner and window cleaner are all paid for by bank transfer. If I need a taxi I use uber, small payments are all just done by waving my phone around.

Always pay cash where possible.

As banks charge businesses for card payments if I pay with £20 cash that £20 will always retain its full value, where as if I pay for something on card the bank will take roughly 10-20p in charges for that payment. Meaning if we go for the lower end at 10p per transaction then once that money has passed through 50 different people in the form of transactions its now only 75% of its original value.

I know cards offer you a level of protection on purchases that money doesn’t etc. I just don’t like that the card machines cost per month and every transaction costs too.

And for smaller transactions it’s a bloody nightmare. I’ve had so many places try and charge a “minimum card payment” and the likes which is crippling for low income families in particular.

In India they recently withdrew the 500 and 1000 rupees ( about £11)notes...

This caused economic chaos...

affected the poorest who rarely have bank accounts, did little to affect counterfeiting,

did not massively improve online banking..

Caused demonstrations.

The GDP fell..

Cash now more widely used than before the notes withdrawal..

India this year will become the most populous country in the world

Don't you just love it when the customer in front of you gets their phone out to pay and frigs about with it for ages looking for the reward vouchers they have been emailed, as well.

Usually involves a last minute deep search of the handbag to find said phone. Never occurs to them to use the time waiting in the queue to get prepared.

Yes but those fees are passed down to the customer through pricing… we pay it either way but I’d sooner pay cash on principal.

I also like to put change in things like the rnli boxes and refuse to sign up to charities I’d much rather give what I can when I can with no obligation which is something else that card restricts me from doing. I also feel it’s a hell of a lot easier for someone to take my money electronically than it is to take it from my persons.

I have trust issues lol

I'm surprised so many people still use cash, I hardly ever do as it's just a load of hassle. I can't remember the last time I paid cash for something. One nice surprise was that I found 20 quid in my wallet that I'd forgotten about.

Debit card. Only paid by card for years now, very rarely deal in cash. Still have a load of loose change from the last time I had to draw out a tenner and get change for parking :-/. Have to pay to park at the doctor's now so keeping hold of it because the machines there are ancient and don't take anything other than cash.

There's tips on Money Saving Expert website for how to increase your credit score (if you need to). Such as get a credit card for all your spending but use it like cash and pay it off in full every month.

I'd use a credit card for big purchases where I need protection on my purchase, then clear it.

I generally use my phone or debit card and rarely have cash.

Why do I want to go off grid, Tesco watch what I spend and I tend get targeted discounts, seems fair to me.

I'm happy to stay on grid, the information from work, mortgages, banks, utilities, phone including landlines and mobiles, passports, visas, work permits, vaccination detail for travel and work, doctors, insurance certificates, loans etc etc will tell everyone what they need to know, paying by cash won't stop the flow of my personal information and I'm happy to divulge, no real secrets apart from recreational sex.

Don't think Tesco's know about that one...or maybe...

It builds up quite quickly.

Credit card when booking flights, hotels and purchases over £100 etc gives that extra security.

Use a Starling and Revolut card abroad, cash for tips.

Cash in the pub but end up coming home with a purse full of change. "

You should ditch Revolut for Chase now it’s far better. Same fee free / live spot rates on ATM & purchases but you get 5% interest on roundups and 2.7% interest on balances

I use Tesco credit card for everything on a daily basis.

It's paid off every month in full and never loaded more than I can pay off.

It gives me protection for my purchases and the points it gives me back in club card vouchers mean I can convert them to spa finder ones that gives me a couple of spa days a year.

Debit cards are the new evil as if you use your overdraft, the interest can be over double the credit card interest.

Play smart and it pays off

"

Why would you?"

It greatly reduces the opportunity for fraud and unwitting involvement in it.

Open and transparent transactions that are digitally recorded provide an audit trail that can be scrutinised.

Cash is virtually impossible to trace and it oils the wheels of many a shady operation.

No one does drug deals in anything but cash, at least at street level.

Eliminate cash, and the drug industry worldwide would be severely hampered.

I prefer to use cash as it's easier to control and you know how much you're spending.

Unfortunately more and more customers prefer to use card, so I don't have so much cash nowadays.

This weekend I'm going to an event ( not sexual) in Mid Wales where on every advert / communication it says cash only, no card payment accepted. That's because there is no signal for the card machines

is bad with either ! When I have cash I spend it and if there’s no cash I’ll still use the card! Like walking into primarni giving a budget of £80 ( that was in cash for this specific reason) and ending up charging the card £178

Yes accepts her punishment of being crap at budgeting!

So now I just try and keep a little cash for pocket money and now just used the card cos then I can see where I’m spending it as with cash I just non receipts anyway

I’ll also get cash out if I know we going to a local fair or something , and to pay for my nails

With the abundance of other payment mechanisms now available, the days of cash are numbered, and with it a lot of criminality that relies explicitly on cash. This is a good thing IMHO. If that's how you feel, that's your prerogative.

But reframing that statement in a different way.

When Ugg in the Paleolithic period (let's say 2 million years BCE) decided he wanted to have a shit (and being a good caveman, he did it outside the cave) got up and headed for the exit, I think it's fairly likely the other cave people looked at him quizically. After all, going "out there" was dangerous. So Ugg points to his posterior and crouches on the ground and makes a straining noise. The other cave people in recognition say "Ahhh". Off Ugg goes to do to his business. Ugg comes back, job (or Big Jobbie, since the Paleo diet was quite protein heavy) done.

The point being, humans are social animals. We watch and observe each other. We look out for one another. Perhaps some cave people didn't give a shit that Ugg was going to take a shit. But others did. Ugg's family had a right to be concerned in case he did not return. The "cave leader" had a right to be concerned due to predator activity, and if Ugg brought a "friend" back.

I think your hyperbole about not being able to take a shit is somewhat alarmist.

I think your hyperbole about not being able to take a shit is somewhat alarmist."

And then, along came Thomas Crapper and the rest, as they say, is history.

The bankers are gonna attempt to kill cash off this year and force CBDC on the populations, after that comes programmable money, social carbon score and mandatory vaccinations.

What is programmable money? Will it listen to our conversations and report back?

What is social carbon score?

This is not going to end well. Particularly for cash.

Debit card for shopping but always cash on nights out.

It's annoying when places won't accept cash and it shouldn't be allowed.

I'm not sure if I am allowed to post YouTube links here, but if you have a look at Coin Bureau on the 5th of October 2022 on YouTube he has an in-depth and easy to understand explanation into it.

(Coin Bureau is a a podcast on cryptocurrency and the factors that affect it, battery covers social credit as he feels it will affect cryptocurrency)

Oh, my days..

We are not all drug dealers. Many people still get paid with cash.

I know.

But cash is a mechanism which does make a lot of crime possible.

With the abundance of other payment mechanisms now available, the days of cash are numbered, and with it a lot of criminality that relies explicitly on cash. This is a good thing IMHO. I've not used cash since 2019 and still have a £20 in my wallet. I don't have coinage at all. It's card all the way and pay off same day with a banking app.

"

Yep, you keep leaving a paper trail of what you are doing. Makes it easy to keep an eye on your daily movements.

Cash only for me

I don't think it's a good idea to dispense with cash altogether. There needs to be an alternative to everything, you can't take choice away.

True but if you don't use it in favour of your card it will be taken away, make a conscious effort to use cash more
