Brave Swedish hunters are tasked with culling 75 of Sweden's 460 Dangerous wild wolves. They use dogs to try and flush out the buggers but these wolves are cunning. On day one not one wolf was culled..

In the UK we are fairly sheltered with our pests being rodents, foxes etc and don't have to fear properly dangerous wild animals.

However, my point stands. For us to continue (and by us, I mean those who have the power and/or money to influence real change) existing in our world, the natural ecosystem is disrupted. Therefore, human intervention (knowledgeable, trained human intervention) is needed to try to maintain a balance.

I'm sure it has many flaws but since I understand the ecological reasons behind a cull, I thought I'd share a little info for those who are concerned for the wolves.
I also stand by my point of they're huge. Not as big as Canadian ones, just as beautiful, but definitely not a snoot I'd want to boop. |

I am concerned for wild life in general as human kind expands into conflict. Culls of whatever kind are usually undertaken to benefit humankind.
As for location you must be familiar with the lesser spotted tax exile in your neck of the woods? |

You do realise that the wolves territory is expanding into human territory right? A few decades ago, wolves were extinct in Sweden, now they have bred so rapidly that the population is out of control. The reason the cull is being done now is probably due to mating season being in late February.
As for our tax system, I'd be more than happy to explain how we are entirely independent from the mainland and pay tax on a sliding scale into our own government in order to fund our own community with no assistance from your tax system. Or would you like to try to mansplain our financial services economy to me as well?  |

I'm very familiar with the reintroduction of wolves into Yellowstone. Sweden is a very different environment and their circumstances are not the same.
Haha, thankfully none on my island and the last red wolf in Jersey zoo died a few years back. The ones I worked with in Canada were gorgeous but absolutely terrifying. The wild ones I studied in Yellowstone even more so.
The experience was incredible, and the conservation knowledge I gained has definitely come in useful sometimes.
Just because a story is in the media, does not mean it is not laced with opinion and has all the facts. It never has all the facts. All media is designed to lead you to an opinion.
Had you read and understood a conservation article and reviews about these particular wolves in this particular ares, had you knowledge of the legalities and preparation involved, the red tape, the organisation, the consultants who dictate every tiny detail, you may have formed a different opinion. Or not. Luckily, that's why experts make these decisions.
As for finance, it certainly pays better than studying large predators in uncomfortable conditions... and I pay far less tax.

They actually reintroduced wolves on a national park, which is on an island, where I live in 2018 because the moose population was out of control due to no natural predators. |

Who do you think pays for all the rangers in these national parks all across the world. Hunters generate big bucks and the animals would be managed/culled anyway. Someone paying big money to do it for them is good business.

responseReports that last year there were similar culls in both Norway and Finland. It makes sense that where wolves, who by nature do not recognise international borders, are faced by a united Scandinavian response |

What the Swedish wolves need is good quality contraceptive education- in the 21st century there is no need for a female wolf to get pregnant if she hasn’t planned a family. Male wolves need to start being more considerate and maybe just accepting a cuddle in late February instead of assuming every female wolf is ‘ up for it!!’  |

Wolf population of Sweden 450
Wolf population of Italy over 3000.
Density of human population
Italy 204 per square km.
Sweden 25 per square km.
So is this cull necessary or just another example of human greed and intolerance to different species.
Apparently the Swedish government thinks a wolf population of 170 is the acceptable population. |
