Wouldn't surprise me if we already have wiped out many a potential life form by sending stuff into space. We don't know what changes we make or poisons we create by exploration. You'd think we'd learn by all the species we've driven to extinction on our own planet, but nope, that's not enough.

couple, us we him her.

100% yes.

It's just arrogance and ignorance that compels humans to believe otherwise.

And as for the religious lunatics thinking we are alone is just insane.

But it's fine to believe in some dude who lives in the sky who created everything and he has like angel's and stuff and has an arch nemesis who lives underground who's evil and shit.

That's okay but life on other planets isn't!!!

Yes we are not alone it's mathematically impossible for us to be the only inhabitants of the entire endless universe.

Otherwise how do you explain vegans?

Just look at how different life forms flourish in such different environments on earth.

With more planets out there than we can even count, it's impossible that life doesn't exist elsewhere.

Unless there is a god and s/he had decided to put everything here on earth, which if you think about it, is bollocks.

Whether we will ever be able to meet/contact alien life is a lot more doubtful I think, due to the humungous distances involved.

Almost certainly somewhere. It will be interesting to see if we ever find other life in our solar system, say the oceans of europa. Then, what is its base, does it have DNA? What amino acids does it use? Does it use oxygen for respiration, could use chlorine, but oxygen is just a lot more efficient. I'm ignoring things like silicone based life as carbon is just so much more efficient (and carbon is much more common).

I've got to ask a few questions here.

Can you identify which governments have stated that there is no extraterrestrial life? I'm interested in who said this and when.

Where do you get your percentage figures from? I'm sceptical that 99% of the world's population think there is extra terrestrial life.

Also the catholic church accounts for about 16% of the world's population, so where do you get the 1% from?

I was brought up as a catholic and at no stage ever in my life was I told that the Catholic Church didn't believe in alien life. I'm pretty sure the position was that we don't know, but either way it's not important in religious terms.

Do you think it's just Catholicism that believes we are the only sole existence of the universe or do the other Christian religions feel the same way?

What's the position with Jainism or animist religions? What did Buddha say about this?

These are genuine questions and I'm keen to understand why you singled out Catholics in your post.

Cheers,

Gbat

The potential for alien life existing at the same time as us, that's within actual travelling distance, strikes me as extremely unrealistic

Sure, with the huge distances and times involved, there are and will be other advanced life forms. But human lide has been incredibly short, in the grand scheme of things, perhaps a quarter of a million years, most of which we've not had this technology to communicate. We will probably make ourselves extinct quite quickly, so won't be around to see much happen.

Statistically the chances of there NOT being life elsewhere in the universe are ridiculously small…

There are millions of stars in our galaxy alone, and if even 1% of them have other planets orbiting them (which is a massive underestimate, current thinking is that the vast majority do), then there’s 10’s of thousands of other planets in our galaxy alone

Consider: life formed on this planet pretty much as soon as it was cool enough to exist.

Let's look back even further. Early stars would be almost entirely hydrogen and helium, as was formed in the big bang. No elements to form life from. A few stellar cycles and you have enough elements for it to be viable...so basically life formed as early as could be expected, both from planetary formation, and stellar evolution.

Given that, I think it's extremely unlikely that life doesn't exist elsewhere. For a number of reasons, it will also probably be understandable to us chemically, and there's a good chance it will be understandable morphological. E.g. eyes are a good thing to have, even if the amino acids that make up your protines are different.

Agree. Even if we could travel at light speed, it would take too long to get around enough solar systems to find anything.

We are thinking alien life will like the roswell close encounters episode when the reality has to be different, for a civilisation to flourish beyond blowing themselves up or destroying their own environment is no mean feat, then you have to factor in theoretical physics, ie light speed travel, humans have mastered nuclear fusion/fission and are nearing interplanetary travel, interstellar travel is the next leap after that and while achievable it will take at least another thousand years at best guesstimate to manage if we go at the rate of technological expansion, even then we are better off sending drones to test viability and that’s probably what we are seeing in the skies today, yes ufo are real, but they travel in a way that does not fit our biological make up, for instance the tictac video was shot on numerous cameras and radar by the best we have in terms of detection and travelled from 50000 feet to five feet in one second, no lifeform could survive that level of G, so somewhere out there in the beautiful cosmos we can even see is life and it’s much more than microbes, , if I’m wrong and we are it, the most advanced life thier is, well that’s scary because we are fucking the planet and spending all our time looking harey Meghan clarkson tate et all, that’s more scary

"Fermi asks where are they??"

The question is as much 'when' are they as where. We're looking at a fairly insignificant time window on the universe. Our own radio transmissions have reach a fairly insignificant part of our own galaxy; were anyone listening they'd have to be very close neighbours to have heard us.

Billions of other planets out there, so it’s virtually guaranteed a few of them will have life. Whether they’re as advanced as us is another matter, though I’d prefer it if space agencies didn’t blast radio waves advertising our location…just in case. Stephen Hawking warned of this years ago. Thought i would see what others opinions are as the wide variety of people on here

I like this question and my answer is…

I really to think so and also my definition of Aliens is Beings who inhabit another planet..are we all not Beings who inhabit a planet..doesn’t this make us Aliens to a certain extent..??

"

Only if we visit other planets with their own life forms.

Where did the first organisms originate from?

When woman showed man the clitoris ?

Yesterday, I learned who the owner of the first G-spot was and how it became so-called. Sitting in airports can be educational.

It's a bit public even for you ! Did you get home safely or are you still in the taxi ?"

It (the G-spot) was named for a German chap's wife - Frau Gräfenberg.

We've been released from the taxi for good behaviour, and home to a bloody freezing house, via Amsterdam

Is there basic life out there? Undoubtedly.

Is there intelligent life out there? Maybe.

Have they visited us? Doubtful.

Although I don’t thing it would take long for any intelligent life which did exist to gain such technology that we’d never know they were there.

In geological terms it’s a blink of an eye for us to move from caves to what we have now, and we’re only just warming up.

We still have no idea of all the species that live on our own planet, what makes us think we're smart enough or advanced enough to find species on planets we don't even know exist? We're humans... and humans are selfish and dumb.

Of course there is "alien" life out there.

With all the potential billions of other planets out there it is sheer arrogance to assume this planet is the only one where life has developed.

It's also a reasonable bet that many of these other lifeforms are "superior" to us in terms of abilty, intellect and any other measure you may want to consider.

100 billion planets in our milkyway galaxy and 125 billion galaxies in the observable universe. I think it's stupid to think we are living on the only planet with life.

We are a small spec of dust in a vast cosmic arena and I have no doubt there are other planets with human like creatures, and like us they ask the question.. "are we alone?"

With the distances between our planets we may never know the answer.

The law of statistics surely means there must be life somewhere...

Will they be at the same level of advancement or better ... or less .. ?

Do the laws of physics, as we understand them, allow for travel to other viable planets in the lifespan of the species?

Does the vastness of the universe against that ability to travel reduce the likelihood of meeting new species improbable at best?

Mars lost all its seas and rivers.

We should still be searching for microbial ( frozen?)life under the surface...

If microbial life found there...case closed..has to be life on different planets/ solar systems/ galaxies/ universes..

That's just it..."the laws of physics as we understand them".

Thar doesn't account for the possibility of fuels and other methods of propulsion or other travel unknown to Humans.

This includes the possibility of wormholes (which mainstream scientists are finally accepting as a very real possibility), solar propulsion or the potential location of "aliens" being much closer to home than is widely accepted.

Other than that, it's highly probable that some intelligent life from elsewhere will be less advanced than Humans, whilst other life will be far more advanced. This is due to the potential for a huge amount of intelligent life and civilisations in the Universe.

Lifeforms do, with an exceptionally high level of probability, exist on other bodies in the cosmos but the distances are so incomprehensibly vast, that contact within the lifetimes of species will never take place.

Humankind will be long gone by the time our transmissions from TV radio, etc will have reached planets in the goldilocks (habitable) zones around distant stars.

Have a look at SETI; the Drake Equation, etc.

Aliens from outer space is a concept invented to put fear into the population about the Communist threat in the 1950s.

People who believe in alien visitors, UFOs, etc tend to have distorted cognitive processes and related mental health issues, such as delusions and hallucinations.

I am confident we are alone in our area of the cosmos.
