Scarborough Walrus Specisism

Tom is a big fan of the north. And reports that the very kind Scarborough Council cancelled it New Year Firework display which only happens once a year. On the advice of so called experts they cancelled the display because Thor the Walrus was in town.
Now firstly. Thor was the god of Thunder so Tom is sure that the walrus is well used to loud bangs.
And what about the other poor animals who suffer every year like the pidgeons and ferrets that most northerners enjoy.
Pure Speciesism.
What is the explanation here.
Tourists have flocked to Scarborough for months to see the walrus. Frighten him away with fireworks then the council would be like killing the golden goose.
Or was it a simpler explanation by these red faced northern officials. Most of the shops would of been shut and you can't get a box of matches anywhere when you need them. This is all over the news. What's going on here guys?

Having worked for a few councils, I'd go with the simple explanation as the most likely. The council was advised that a fireworks display would stress the animal so they decided not to do it. Sure there's an add on question of doesn't it stress other animals, and that is correct. However, it's a different question to the current one. |

I went to see the walrus yesterday, Tom. He seemed in fine spirits.
I also spoke to Councillors Cox and Evans about their intentions and they said they did it just to piss you off.
What can you do? |

Having worked for my local Council the "PR mantra" is always that there are 3 ways of doing things...
1 - The right way
2 - The wrong way
3 - The perceived right way and be seen to be doing it
Of course #3 always takes preference.
Anyway, we wish Thor a safe journey back home and hope he's fully refreshed after his impromptu pitstop |

It was the only decision they could make. Freya the walrus in Oslo had to be euthanized as people wouldn't stop coming to see her. With Thor and little to none crowd control it posed a risk to humans being crushed at night, with having revellers and walrus enthusiasts crowded together. I fear for Thors life if people simply cannot leave him alone... |

You're quite right of course so you will be pleased to hear Thor left Scarborough a few hours ago and is on his travels once again. |

land of make believe |
"Scarborough Council,at the time didn't say why they cancelled the fireworks but it was obvious.
Although noone else seemed to get the hint as it didn't stop everyone else letting theirs off so he was probably still very stressed.
Although being in the middle of a crowded marina must also be stressful for him too.
Also Tom he has only been here a day and left already.

I think it’s more likely an SME decided it was the best course of action in the rare event of a Walrus turning up. I don’t think there’s any other reason to be fair.
Wether it’s right or wrong, I can’t answer that. |

"i think a Walrus visit is a pretty big deal. They are not native to the UK. Being a good host and accomodating seems the polite thing to do. "
Totally mate. Not everything needs to be a big conspiracy. |

"It seems Thor the Walrus has left Scarborough now. Maybe the resort wasn't to his taste, or Yorkshire hospitality was found wanting."
Perhaps he was waiting for the fireworks and left because they were cancelled. |
