Does anyone still do it or have even heard of it? I'm sure the older members will.
The first person to come through your door on new years day was supposed to be a tall dark man carrying a piece of coal. They went in the front door and out the back.
My grandad was the first footer in his village as he was tall with black hair. He always went home slightly worse for wear as he was always given a wee dram |

I have heard of this too and other variants.
My Nain always opened the front and back door at midnight to say goodbye to the year and welcome in the new.
I would continue but afraid of the chavvies coming in and nicking me telly |

As stated elsewhere, I'm not into first footing. Had enough of always being picked to shiver outside the door when I was younger and darker haired.
However, I look forward to being someone's first nine inches of 2023.
