I'm sure some of you watched the guy on joe rogan podcast about sl@very in the cobalt mines in the Congo, this area in the Congo mines 70% of the worlds cobalt, its used in lithium batteries, smart phones, and in electric cars,but it's the inhuman conditions they are mining in,tesla do not use cobalt mined from Congo apparently and recently produced a battery that can run without it, albeit low end short range vehicles, thoughts?

The kafala system, prevalent in most Middle Eastern countries, is a form of indentured servitude and is used in a wide variety of service industries. Whilst there are supposed to be rules and regulations around it, in reality, such rules are not enforced.
You will find all kinds of people working there who are not free to leave, not free to change employer and who are denied basic rights like proper accommodation, proper food, adequate rest time and access to healthcare. |

Teslas into all kinds of R&D in this area, we have a huge global problem with diesel , far more significant than the car industry. Diesel theft in rural Africa starts conflicts and holds up corrupt governments, the sooner the word doesn’t need diesel the better. People want and need stuff.
Big companies know that people can't afford to pay thousands for stuff but they want as much profit as possible, so they pay a pittance for the raw materials to be mined, and the stuff to be made.
Now, some people will say that without these jobs those people being paid a pittance would starve.
I'm going to say that they could be paid better so they don't have to work so hard or send their children out to work. They can't afford the stuff they're being worked to death to make.

As labour is so cheap in Congo ( according to the news ) now all companies will be moving there .
Making china with a level of unemployment higher then Europe .

We don't have much stuff. We don't get new devices every time there's an upgrade, only if it is broken beyond reasonable repair. We have a small (old) telly, which we will keep until it breaks. We only have the laptops provided by work. We don't have games consoles or a home hub or smart house stuff installed. We just don't see the need or feel the need to spend thousands of pounds on tech. |

I did wonder why they need a highway across Africa as we don't import from there on a grand scale. I thought it was for raw materials.

For one to be millionaire farting money in casinos n strip clubs is millions of families struggling to eat n pay bills .
I’m being ripped of . It wouldn’t hurt pay £100 a week .

Looks like the investment in Africa is for raw materials to get to Asia easier. Although, I had to use Google translate as it's in German.

Perhaps we're not very good capitalists?! We decorate our house when it needs it, not because we fancy changing it. Our (leather) sofa suite was purchased for £50 from friends, because our previous sofa was broken. We bought it about 7 or 8yrs ago, there's no need to get rid of it so it will come to our new house. We have the same Christmas tree and decorations we bought when at uni in 2005. Etc. Why spend unnecessary money and throw stuff away? |

Because people like brand new and shiny.
I usually give my old phone to someone who needs it when my upgrade is due. In the grand scheme of things I doubt that makes much difference when you consider how much stuff is made every year.
I think I read that lithium will be the next resource that Governments fight over, as it's vital to a lot of tech; especially in medicine.
I also read that there's a meteor or whatever floating in space that has enough lithium on it to keep Earth going for eternity.
Perhaps that's why there's a new Space Race.

It was ever thus - much of the historic and inherited wealth of this country comes from one form of exploitation or another.
We can sit back now and take a more moral stance, but still, so much of the "stuff" we buy is the price it is because of exploitation of others.
Even the NHS is underpinned by taking doctors from poorer countries that probably need them more - training enough ourselves is seen as a too expensive option by government.
The challenge for individuals is working out what to do about it.
