I’ve been “dry” for ten years now and it was a life changing decision.
It’s not easy at first and it’s not for everyone.
I now have a couple of high Adrenalin and high energy hobbies and my personal well being both mentally and physically are amazing.
Sorry to crow but I can’t recommend sobriety (for me) highly enough. |

Being doing dry January for many years it’s easy, I had a serious issue with drink in my late tens early twenties I decided then I needed to slow down or become alcoholic. Now I only drink at the weekend and haven’t been d*unk in many years. |

I stopped drinking in September. I wasn't a heavy drinker, as in large volume or benders but I drank every day. If I'd had a bad day I'd drink a bit more, or a good day I'd celebrate with a few extra drinks.
I had a general 'unwell' feeling, I felt old and tired. I had flabby bits that I'd not had before.
The worst thing, or the thing that impacted my life the most was I'd become a glass half empty, negative, type of person. Life was just 'grey'
It's taken a while to see and feel the benefits but I'm really starting to feel and act like my old self again, positive, active, and a general feeling that life is good.
It's a personal choice and not for everyone but it's really changed my life!

This. I know its not a popular opinion given our societal relationship with alcohol but when people say they think 4 weeks alcohol free will be difficult or a challenge they really need to look at their relationship with alcohol |

As someone who works part time in a pub, and someone who loves the whole pub culture, I implore everyone to support thier local.
Dry January is a gimmick and should be discouraged.
The hospitality industry is still struggling after lockdowns. Footfall is no where near pre-pandemic levels. And now with upwards of £4,000 per month estimated energy bills, pubs need all the help they can get.
A recent survey of 4,500 pubs found 85% are considering permanently closing for 2 days a week. And of that 85% at least 40% considering closing all together.
The pub used to be the hub of a community, it was a place to socialise yes, but it was also a place you'd find your local plumber, electrician, builder, mechanic. Some pubs still have this community spirit (glad to say the one I work at does), and that community needs to be protected.
A pub is not just a place to go and get d*unk. |

But my nearest pub is 20 minutes away and I over drink in them. Well use to.
Dry January for me is a reset and I bet you make more profit on lemonade then you do on the beer.. |

Not easy. Both out New Years day on an all dayer going to football , then Mrs W&W birtday first week of Jan , then away for last week with a right bunch of p**s heads.
So have to be a dry Feb |

No, but I don't drink that much year round so don't feel I need to cut it out.
I'm also slightly - and irrationally, I know - anti these kind of theme months, but I know they can be a helpful spur, so good luck, OP! |

How is Dry January a gimmick? That seems like a rather ill-informed opinion.
Also, pubs are not owed our custom. Lots of placing are struggling - doesn't mean we're obliged to give them our money.
Lots of pubs *don't* have the community spirit you talk of any more.
However, you are right - pubs are not just somewhere to get d*unk. Therefore, your whole complaint about Dry January is irrelevant. |

If a pub isn't just a place to get d*unk stock a decent range of non alcoholic options and you'll still get trade? |

I’m not but I have intentionally stopped drinking for 3 months before and it felt good. I don’t drink regularly really atm….I don’t think I’ve drank since Xmas. I drink very on and off but good luck OP! Remember it’s just 1 month out of your whole life that you’re giving it up for and it makes it seem like not so much time think of the benefits and hope you smash your dry January! |

I have had a drink every night for over a year, 2 tins Guinness and 3 whisky usually during week and more at weekends
I find it extremely difficult not to have a drink, some mornings I wake up and say no drink tonight but always end up opening a tin and pouring a nip.
If I can go one night without, I will then try for a full week without. |
Reply privately (closed, thread got too big) | |

It doesn’t have to be dry and boring… there are some brilliant 0% alternatives to what you would normally drink
I’m absolutely chuffed for example Guinness now do a 0.0, Gordon’s do one for gin, bud, Heineken, becks, ect ect
Many good wines as well…….
The other good thing about 0.0’s is that they also tend to be a lot…. Lot lower on calories!!!
160 calories in a 440ml can of Guinness…….. 70 calories in a can of Guinness 0.0% |
