Away for work in Europe and looking for those of a similar mindset? Anyone got any tips and/or experiences they’d like to share?

Scunthorpe

Learn some basics of the language, don't eat at tourist places or drink too much.

Mostly, enjoy the experience and try to make the most of the cultural opportunities.

the gutter looking at the stars (S.Australia)

If somebody tells you a major tourist destination is "closed today" they are lying, they just want to try and get you to go somewhere that benefits them, usually financially. I've had this many times, once in Thailand "oh so sorry for you, the floating market isn't open today" and the best one has to be in Egypt "I'm so sorry the pyramids aren't open today" - yeah right mate course they're not!

What is this 'mindset' you speak of? Probably best describing that first.

Also where in europe exactly?

Finally, are you actually looking to meet people in person or just hear about these 'tips/experiences' you mention above?

"I you're unable to make yourself understood, try shouting it slowly."

Or speak slowly in English with a subtle local accent

"If you're taken, call your dad immediately."

My dad's special skills extend only to being able to wire a plug and cooking a mean steak, so I'm not sure he'd be much use

Try getting a tut-tut in Delhi to where you want to go , it’s like Groundhog Day , whatever you try you end up at the same rug shop.

I can be so hard to get legit guides in some countries because the potential commissions available to rogue guides are so high.

Like others said, learn some language and avoid tourist areas. Use accom like Airbnb or the equivalent local network for independent house stays, look after your hosts and they will look after you. Non touristy areas can be much work at first but you quickly learn the systems that locals use
