The Killers - yes Mr Brightside was a banger but if they hadn't released that track would they really have acquired the level of blind devotion that they enjoy to this day? I just don't get it, mediocre songs at best.

Nirvana.

They were good, but of the "big 4" bands of grunge from the 90s, they were easily the weakest.

The only reason Nirvana are so massively rated is because of Cobain's death. Had he lived, they'd be seen as a mid-level band hanging on the tails of more talented acts.

Another vote for Coldplay - decent first two albums and can bring out the occasional banger but my god they should have become white line their last album was so middle of the road.

I think Lewis Capaldi tries too hard and jut don't get The Smiths - Morrissey is so over-rated!

Agreed.

Their first two albums were brilliant. Some absolutely awesome chunes on both.

But with as with a lot of bands, with fame and popularity comes mediocrity.

Also Bob Dylan. Saw him live a few years ago and his voice was completely gone. Sounded like an animal in distress whilst his band rattled through his greatest hits in the background. Shame because there are a lot of his earlier songs that I really like.

Yeah, "Sex On Fire" made them. That's when they became mainstream. But they lost that edge..the grittyness they had. Even their appearance.

Initially they were very unkempt.

In 2003, Christian O'Connell on Xfm described them as the hairiest band in the world.

By 2009 they had stylish haircuts and a new wardrobe.

Its a shame, but that's the business. Do you want to make edgy raw rock music and earn some money.

Or bland vanilla rock and make millions.

Absolutely. Big Madchester fan.

Oasis, James, The Charlatans, Joy Division, The Smiths, The Stone Roses.

Im genuinely shocked to see so many votes for Oasis.

Are people choosing them because the band is overrated?

Or because of their dislike of the Gallaghers and their attitude??

The Killers/Brandon Flowers.

Hot Fuss was an epic album. So many great tunes.

Then Sams Town...yeah, one or two decent songs.

of all the bands you mentioned all were cracking

The Charlatans and the Roses and James being my Favourites,

The amount of cracking songs they produced make them great (GREAT BANDS)

Oasis had 4/5 cracking tunes the rest was hype,

Didn't help that Liam lived off of the 1996 to early 2000 hype and was a total bellend since,,

Actually the Beatles is a good one. I got slated because I couldn't get into the hype about McCartney's Glastonbury appearance. If I had to pick 1000 favourite tunes I doubt there'd be a single Lennon and McCartney song in there.

Another band where the instantly recognisable front man sadly died way to early. Therefore everyone thinks the band is amazing. Same with Nirvana.

Oh I am LOVING this thread!!! Some of it is hilarious!

Now of course people are free to choose whoever they like. And I am sure some comments here are designed to purely "trigger" or "troll".

But its the reasons some feel a certain act is overrated that is splitting my sides with often ludicrous historical and/or factual inaccuracy making me guffaw the most!

Keep it up! I love it!

"I noticed that you haven't mentioned Fleetwood Mac in there. Not just a band?

I was just quoting from a song. It’s not an exhaustive list.

Ahhh, of course it is.

"Thou Shalt Always Kill" by....er....Scroobius? (Or something like that)."

Scroobius pip

Haha! Obviously I'm being very tongue-in-cheek! But... I re-emphasize the stance people are free to choose whomever they wish. So I don't want to single out any individual.

.

But people suggesting that certain acts are only famous/popular due to the death and subsequent almost 'canonisation' of said 'iconic' member when said acts had already enjoyed chart topping, stadium filling and festival headlining success simply proves that this isn't the case. Yes the tragic loss may have increased the rating, often to 'god-like' status. But they were very highly regarded already. Certainly not overrated.

Are any bands albums really great.

They usually throw 3 or 4 known tracks in with a load off old dross.

But in answer to the question.

Elvis

The Beatles

Oasis

There are many more……

Deffo the Beatles. Got to be careful being critical of them on here. They have some edgy fans.
