I’ve had an idea

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

Anyway I’ve been a bit down about my upcoming 50th in March so I’ve had a bright idea this morning. I’m going to have a ‘ firsts at 50’ year and put a positive spin on it, try new things, go places I’ve never been etc

So initially I’m thinking…

Cookery classes

Visiting somewhere I’ve never been once a month

Learning astronomy

Some kind of dance classes

Learning new skills, maybe DIY which I’m terrible at

So I’m after some inspiration from fellow formers for some ideas? So please inspire me

Worthing

Astronomy is a very relaxing hobby to get into. I have a 'Skywatcher' telescope which serves me well. The best time of the year to observe is on a clear winters night as less heat haze from buildings. Jupiter was specially spectacular to look at in recent months. With DIY there are plenty of tutorials on youtube.

I did the same. Girls at work sat me down to watch love island one night but I just couldn’t do it. They also took me to the bingo. One of the most stressful experiences of my life

Have a look at dance classes in your local area, there's usually lots advertised, especially with new year so close, I started Salsa dancing a while back, it's great fun

Sounds great. I started photography about 10 years ago and it takes me all over the world now. About two years ago I started training in gold and silver , initially just buying then lost investment casting , cutting, soldering making jewellery etc

For dancing & cookery classes I like Seville & Granada. If you book them on Airbnb experience it is cheap & the app makes it very easy to Uber around all your experiences.

Other things yiu could do; fell running, wild swimming, snorkelling/diving.

Do a list of mountains to climb , start with Y3P and national 3P to get fit. Then go abroad. There’s lots of less touristy ones you can pay local guides to take you up. Last year I did mount Sinai and Jebel Jais,

On astronomy Jupiter is going to be visible on the Eastern side of the moon on the 29th.

Look at upcoming events in your local area and volunteer if you want to make them achievable, they can vary from litter picking, tree planting, bee keeping and helping out at farms or nature reserves to nude bike races and life models

In addition to the experiences you can just do, how about something that will require some form of training or effort over the year. Cycle 50 miles, scuba dive 50ft, swim 50m (underwater, breath hold). Visit 50 towns. Talk to 50 people. Sure you can come up with more.

Well done op. Easier said than done. But the intention is wonderful. We pass this earth only once so important to make sure we regret what we do more than what we haven't done.

As for ideas... Learning... Anything... Languages... Skills...history...Night classes... Teaching? Volunteering.? Travelling? Achieving? Happiness? Weight loss / gain? Running a half marathon? A 10k? Spiritual enlightenment? Good luck with your brilliant ideas?

You’ll enjoy the astronomy, I do it.

However, buy the best you can afford and join a local club to avoid disappointment.

Make your first targets Saturn and Jupiter and you’ll be hooked.

I started ticking off my fuck-it list; live entertainment I've never experienced; did a burlesque course; I'd like to have a go at being a life drawing model (still on my list); silly things like taking an afternoon off work to do something naughty; visit places in England you've never been; do things that make you feel good too and expand your own confidence.

You'll be surprised how many new opportunities come your way once you start saying yes to things.

As my friend used to say - if it ain't gonna kill you or get you pregnant, it's all good!

Enjoy the journey

I would skip DIY as there's lots of pitfalls but a course in interara design and painting would work.

As for Learning astronomy there are also you can try to start with to make it much easier

"Perhaps a creative writing course?

Nice idea thank you x

My pleasure. There is one such course in Stratford up on Avon. A full week of emersion in the art of putting pen to paper!

500 miles?

I need to get googling to see if there is something similar in my area x

SUA is a mere bus ride from you!

It’s miles away ! "

Good luck with the next adventure in life, OP. No specific suggestions but you should focus on the things which would give you most pleasure and you have some passion for, these will be the ones you'll carry on with.

Oooooo what about a tattoo? I meant to get one in my 50th year but I'm running out of time. Can't really justify the expense at the moment and don't want a cheap crap one.

Learn to fire eat, take up a burlesque class?

Both of which are part of my job but hella fun and everyone should try once just to feel like a badass

I had a thought about something you could do everyday - use your less dominant hand more for everyday tasks.

Things like brushing your teeth, scrolling with your mouse, hoovering, filling a kettle, stirring a brew .. the list is endless and it'd both occupy and develop hand eye skills

That's actually alot harder than you'd first think.

Try masturbating with your left hand - quite difficult right??? Hey it's a swinging site I gotta drag the tone down a bit occasionally
