Driving occasionally an aged Mercedes Sprinter.

It’s falling apart but drives like a train. Just had 2 new front tyres fitted & afterwards have 2 yellow engine management lights coming on together. One is the ESP & the other one is the picture of a spinning wheel, which I’m told is ASR/BAS.

I’d like to say it’s coincidence that they’ve only come on after the new tyres, but it would be good to appear a little knowledgeable before going back to the garage, as I’m sure they’ll deny they’ve done anything to cause this.

I know it’s difficult without reading the fault codes, but is there anything glaringly obvious here. Many thanks.

Check they have put the correct tyre size on.

I had a car (it was 07) and if I had my spare wheel on the front it would bring all kinds of lights on and go in limp home mode.

Definitely check the tyre size, this will twist its melons

"Definitely check the tyre size, this will twist its melons "

That’s a very interesting question. It’s not my van but I replaced the tyres with the same size that were on there, which are slightly wider than the size the online calculators came up with. I did question this with the van owner.

Having said that how would that explain the lights weren’t on before the tyres were changed?

All to do with Abs pick up ring, this will usually throw up Esp faults too. Especially replacing just two tyres, this will alter wheel speed etc.

Damaged abs sensor in the process perhaps?

So are you saying this is the garages fault, or just something that happens?

No not at all, however it could just be a abs sensor has been caught changing the wheel, are the new tyres front or back?

Sorry yes seen on the front... you usually have an abs sensor on o e front and one rear wheel, I'd definitely say this is whats causing it to show the lights as the sensors are sending back different signals to your module thus showing as a fault, any cheap code reader would show the problem, I'd personally take it back to the garage and explain what's happened

I’ve only ever noticed ABS sensors on the front, I don’t work on vans often (mainly HGV). ABs sensors and exciter rings are behind stub axle and wouldn’t normally be touched when changing a wheel. There is no need for the garage to touch or even look at them.

Suppose it’s a possibility that with banging/vibration maybe a sensor has slightly moved out of position or disturbed some rust.

Has tyre pressure been checked and we’re all tyres balanced after they were changed? I haven’t a clue about mechanics but my tires are always balanced after being changed

Agree with you, possibly vibration etc but I'm 100% certain that having two different wheel sizes will effect the WSS and make it think there is an issue, newer cars it will flash up from between 2 to 5mph difference in wheel speed. Stick to the right size tyres!!

Were the two new tyres placed on the same axle? Ie both at front or both at rear..

If the rolling circumference is too different across an axle then the ABS/ESP system cannot compensate and will start chucking toys out of it's pram.

This can still happen if they are both on the same axle but the remaining tyres are significantly more worn or of a different sidewall ratio (the '/65' part of the tyre size)

The brand I work with has a famous 4x4 system and the tolerance for tyre depth differences is really critical to avoid issues like these.

Yes, checking the same tyre size is fitted to both front wheels is the first thing I would check.

As mentioned a number of times in the post already.

Just to reiterate, the two front tyres were replaced,I bought 2 the same size (which I thought was the right thing to do). They were also the same size as the ones that were worn & also match the 2 tyres on the rear which weren’t replaced. So nothings changed.

Are the wheels bolt torqued to the correct tightness ? .

A loose wheel could cause vibration or affect the ABS sensor .

I think on sprinter vans the wheel bolts need to be re torqued after 30 miles or so .

The change has been that the fronts now have around 8mm of tread instead of Xmm of the worn tyres. It's possible that this is enough of a difference to the rears to upset the system.

Alternatively has ABS sensor wiring been knocked or disturbed when the wheels were changed.
