I dislike the word, and try not to use it myself, though it is so embedded in The Discourse now I have done sometimes.

We do need a word for a woman happy and confident in her sexuality and enjoying multiple partners as part of that. Given how deep misogyny runs - far deeper than homophobia, so 'queer' is not an analogy - I don't know if 'slut' can be successfully reclaimed.

Everyone will have their own definition, naturally, but to me it also hints at a certain transactional attitude to the partners. Like the male 'stud', the status of the 'slut' requires human individuals to be turned into bedpost notches.

Fuck. Reading through all that, I feel like Savonarola. I am NOT saying 'Get thee to a nunnery!' Have at it, obviously...it's just that word.

1. A few years ago, a friend of mine left their passport behind in the rented French house we'd stayed in, 400 miles south. They didn't notice until we were at Dover. This friend is an independent-minded woman and wanted to talk to the authorities herself. She got absolutely stonewalled, and threatened with being detained in secure accommodation for travelling without correct papers.

I then spoke to the same people, with my nice middle class manners and voice, played along a little with the customs' official's misogyny - "What can one expect?" one French official said. "She is pretty - one cannot expect her to be clever also." Within 10 minutes I'd been put through to a chap working late at Whitehall, faked a plausible mutual acquaintance, and got her waved through.

That would ABSOLUTELY not have happened if I hadn't had the class, race, and sex privileges I have.

2. See 1, above - generally sail through life like a customer in First Class, having doors opened for me so swiftly and invisibly I don't even see them until friends with less privilege tell me of them. But at least I'm aware of it.
