For the people who had 6 kids and wanted to pay no tax, from the 2 working adults... thank you for pole tax. Also thankyou for being strong on the Falklands... i could say so many things including giving hard workers a real chance of bettering themselves. Get well soon Iron Lady ! To me she is a lady of 87 - I feel compassion towards ANY elderly person who has to be admitted to hospital. I would not ask about people's work achievements/ political _iews/ actions or lack of in the context of their welfare in old age.

Am i missing something? Did she close the mines because they were making far too much money? Were they soo successful that she felt embaressed about the wealth coal miners brought to the country??

It is business a tough choice to make but a business move. You guys do realize she was just a spokes woman dont you? She had people behind the scenes making her do things. You think Cameron comes up with all his own ideas?

I understand it is already planned and gets updated regularly in case she goes suddenly. There was an on-line petition to oppose the State Funeral and suggesting it should be sponsored by the private sector.

I can understand people not liking that she closed the pits but there was no escaping the facts that British Coal was greatly over priced and of a lower quality compared to cheaper and better quality coal from abroad.

Mrs T at 87 has advanced Altzheimers which she has had for some time, it's a long time since she made an influential statement or had any power.

As a prime minister she was no different to any of them? How many can any of us name that we love or respect. There can be no reason to give any of them a state funeral in this day and age. We hope she doesn't die over Christmas, telly would be ruined with all the obits and documentaries that are stacked on shelves waiting to be aired.

I left school at 15 to get a job to pay the mortgage on my parents house, I don't regret it and would do it again tomorrow. My dad was a miner for 39 years, they were treated worse than animals, our family income was £10.90 a week. I say thank god for the people who donated food and fuel parcels, some people have short memories or silver spoons in their mouths. Money to money ....just for a change. Oh before you shoot me down, I did the college and uni thing as a mature student and paid my way thank you very much!

This lady gave me the opportunity to be where I am now x I was born into a poor family with 7 brothers and sisters and a 2 up 2 down with nothing

Both parents worked and she inspired me and yes opened the door with YTS

20 years later I employ over 150 people and as I sit here tonight with a glass of wine I am proud that 150 family's will be able to pay their bills and have a good Christmas and all down to her opening the door

Not perfect who is ? But she created the scene that if you really wanted to do well and you have a fair wind behind you you can !! And as for the miners and the like one door shuts an other opens x look at those city's now ! And as for Arthur Scargill his true colours have just been outed

I realise that the two are unconnected, I am aware also that there are strong feelings about Lady Thatcher... and I can empathise with some of those.

What I fail to understand that there is so little compassion for a frail, elderly dementia sufferer...

I would love to see you back some of that up! I would also like to ask you who it was who sold our Gold reserves, who stole millions from pensions, by taxing them retrospectively. Who at every election promised more handouts to the voters just to get back in again and it turn making our "social budget" too large to be sustained..

I would also like to ask who has just admitted that the Labour party "got it wrong" on immigration by having a virtual open door policy! I could go on, but some people won't listen and those that would have already posted reasonable on this thread...

One of her jobs as a scientist was to see how much air could be pumped into ice-cream. She also said that it was fair that everyone pays the same (referring to the scrapped Community Charge) irrespective of income. That was a regressive tax in which poorer people paid a greater proportion of their income on the poll tac than rich people. How can that be fair? It's horrible in hospital no matter what political background you're from. Even private hospitals are horrible cos you're there cos there's something wrong with you. And now I'm going to bed. My other half is from the Falklands, lived and suffered through the war, Mrs Thatcher is a hero to him, she saved them .. and believe me what the Argies did to him was not nice. I never appreciated Mrs T till I met him ... so I hope she either gets well or has a peaceful dignified death.

I just don't get it ??? If you do well and pay more tax as a result in income tax and paye and employ others and pay employers tax too at 12% on top you reckon they should pay even more tax ??? What this country needs at the moment is more encouragement for sme 's to invest and employ people but unfortunatly there is no incentive for them to do so at least under Thatcher she gave that incentive hence why labour had a full bank account when they came to power and incidentally they changed very little in the beginning and that is what fucked us up !!! What ever she was in her life now she is an elderly person who has Alzheimer's disease. I sat with my own grandfather as he died after suffering from this disease for 10 years. He was a shell of a man and its a horrific way to end your life (I know that's apparently not why she's in hospital at present) this lady deserves respect and dignity as a human being end of

As a human being I wish her well and I'm not going to go into all the pros and cons of her time as PM. What I will say though, is that my dad and hubby's dad were both in the mining industry, so were many members of our families. I saw the struggles to survive as the miners fought for their jobs, the police who waved £10 notes under their noses in mocking, communities torn apart, friends and family relationships ruined never to recover, her own hatchet man Macgregor. I could go on all day and I will never forget, forgive? Yes because life is all about forgiveness and I would never wish any ill on an old lady, but the hurt still lingers around these parts, sorry everyone but they are my thoughts x

Mrs T was credited with a speech in which she said that "There is no reason to have society if we have strong hard working families in our communities" That sentence has been deconstructed over the years by greter minds than mine but I do think it gives an insight into her overall philosophy and in my _iew sent the message of look after No1!

This thread more than any other that I can recall has shown just how readily some members will show their fangs and release their venom.

I neither care for Lady Thatcher nor the majority of the policies and decisions made at the time of her being Prime Minister.

Regardless, I recognise her for being a strong leader and for being the public face of many an unpopular governmental decision.

The fact that 20+ years after her fall from power she is so divisive is testament to her effectiveness as a Prime Minister.

For that alone, she has my respect.

It is easy to lay the blame at the feet of one person, yet successive governments have failed to turn the ship around and have indeed, in many cases, made the situation worse with poor policy decisions - all the time using Lady Thatcher as a scapegoat and a public knocking stick.

In addition to pillorying her for decisions reached and policies made, we should also be asking questions of governments since as to why they have failed to change her legacy - both in undoing some of her policies and also in her public image.

At the moment, she is an elder of the State who is poorly and health wise is not likely to recover from the illnesses and afflictions from which she suffers.

When she does go, it will literally be closing of a chapter in our history that we may, in time, overcome or alter but not without someone who has her strong decision making skills and the balls to carry them through.

Of this current government, I am unconvinced.
