Last day of children's programmes on BBC1. Does the move to a dedicated channel deprive youngsters of access to main stream output?

Yes! I know the argument is that everything is now in its dedicated banding but the bridge to adult issues for me was the news starting after Magic Roundabout. It also provided a moment when parents would watch too as they settled down just before the news came on.

Exactly. I too was a magic roundabout to news viewer. The younger generation are far enough removed from reality as it is. Now they will never be educated in world affairs!

the digital age has made it possible for this to happen.

cooking, home building and antique programmes seem to have taken up the schedule that was once reserved for children.

education is important and some of these shows develop skills and a level of interaction which are all part of learning.

and only downside i see of having channels exclusively dedicated to children is the advertising that bombards them with product after product.

and this brings an added pressure on the parents.

I think there has been a general downgrading of children's television with lots of dubbed cartoons. Some of the dramas are still very good. The Russell T Davis Wizards vs Aliens was a bit like old Dr Who and accessible.

I am unlikely to know what programming there is for children now and will have just a bit less to talk to the kids about.

Bring back Saturday morning live television for kids on the main channels.

That may be the one thing that means parents will insist they watch Cbeebies and CBBC rather than the other channels. Relentlessly pushing items to the experts on pester power is not a good idea.

even though i do not have children of my own i have noticed there seems to be too much computer generated programmes instead of a human face.

all them disney pixar and others just look the same to me.

Freewheelers! I thought I was the only one who remembers it! Whatever happened to Ronald Leigh-Hunt? - old enough to be yer Grandad, but drove a Lotus Elan - so got cred points back for that!

in fact i think kds would rather watch programmes like brainic because its blowing things up and learning how to do it.

my nephew is well into science and addicted to that programme.

FollyFoot Farm.

The kids do like Brainiac and Top Gear and some others because it is childish but for grown-ups.
