Work experience

Not sure if it's something that still goes on today but when I was at school it was compulsory.
I wanted to be a carpenter so got sent to a factory who made furniture, spent the entire time putting cardboard boxes together boring as hell,zero carpentry.
I did become a carpenter but the work experience didn't make any difference deciding this.
So where did you do your work experience and did it help you with your ultimate career choice? |

I wanted to work with animals and was sent to a horse livery and then a dog and cat boarding kennels (we have work experience once a week for an entire year)
I am now a farmer, but I started farming when I was 8 before either of those work placements |

Did 2 weeks in a vauxhall motors garage. Remember on my last day they stacked tyres over me, pushed me over and rolled me around the workshop. Made me the man I am today (I'm not a mechanic) |

I didn’t really know what I wanted to do but spent 2 weeks in a high street bank.
They gave me the job of sorting rejected cheques - you ran them through an oversized machine, Then they got bundled and posted to the originating bank

I really wanted to work in the music industry. My placement was in a musical instrument shop.
Used the till a couple of times, took stock and mainly spent the time playing guitars and jamming with employees.

I did filing all week and changed me mind and never wanted to work in an office ever again.   "
I wasn't sure what I wanted to do and worked in an office. Decided the same as you and became cabin crew. |

Courses that require the students to spend a time on placement, need to be treated very carefully.
The course that did,any decades ago, at the height of the NI Troubles, sent me to a quango, which did promise much in the first week, but ultimately did deliver very little; I spend the whole year in a windowless storeroom where I was supposed to work on my thesis.
Principally what I learned was that workplace and other politics played a big part of the work.
It was a steep learning curve in how my minority group were marginalised and shunned in N.Ireland.
I would never work in a similar organisation.
Educate your tutors from the outset that you require a beneficial time away from the course. |

I wanted to be a vet, so they sent me to work in a vets. Which was awful, some truly horrible sights, lots of heartbreak and I came home after the first week crying my eyes out to my mum refusing to go back for the second. I have a lot of respect for vets now.
The second week they put me in a nursery looking after tots. It was quite good |

You learned never to work for a quango, I’d add public sector to the list. Good for you learnedvot early.
My course required 1 year in industry, I was sent to Astra zeneca and learned a huge amount , then I worked for a quango and thought I’d arrived in hell |

I wanted to be an engineer so they sent me to an aerospace factory. But they put me to work in the office for a few days before I told them I was meant to be in the factory area. I hated the office where I was putting things in alphabetical order. I did enjoy the factory but where I was treated absolutely amazingly as I was a 15 year old girl among middle aged men. They were fabulous.
I was adamant that I hated office work.
I now work in an office. |

I worked in a private animal collection.
About 3 hours of cutting up fruit, fish and chicks for twenty mad minutes of feeding. But then used to be able to wander the park all to myself and mingle with the animals.
Some mad animals in that place. Owner kept them all to himself only the odd researcher allowed in. |

I worked at a couple of different places in the same sector that I was doing my college course on. Absolutely hated it. Now do something entirely different. |

When left the children’s home went in to lodge with lady started on yts scheme if anyone remembers them most of time cheap labour in and about Warrington based in Runcorn most of the time just pissballing about got permanent job in Runcorn paying six times what the yts was paying  |

I did mine with the navy. I was not a fan of the discipline and yes sir/no sir business lol so that put pay to that. But it was a great experience, I got to be on the Victory to set up for Trafalgar Day. |

Not sure if they took a lot from it but I did.Changed my view of today's youth as they were really good, positive, willing, hard working. One young lad was so good we had a whip round and gave him a pay packet, nearly made him cry.His mum later phoned me to say thank you and she had never seen him so pleased |

To be fair he got a huge hug off the office manager, very pretty, slim with big firm tits and she crushed him against them.Would have made me pleased too lol |

I wanted to be a teacher initially, went to work experience in a school…really excited and I still remember a guy saying to me pretty blankly why the fuck would you want to do this? I’ve wasted my life.
From there I suddenly lost interest in the idea and never pursued it more |

I did my work experience at a local free paper.
I made coffee for the real people. I no longer drink hot drinks.
I was sent to remove dumped copies of the paper from some undergrowth. I still spend an unusual amount of time crashing about in undergrowth looking at abandoned things.
I was eventually exiled to most distant corner of the building and left for days to sort out the paper’s archive of back issues. I very much enjoy being alone, and I’m quite organised.

I wanted to be a chef, obviously they place you in kitchens, i lucked out and got a fancy new hotel and one of the very few Sound head chef i ever met(most were Aholes) , he hired me as a weekend Commis after my 6 week Work experience, thought me loads before fecking back to the cruise ships. |

Flip side of the coin ...
Now retired, I was a nurse on our Neonatal Unit.
Had work experience teenagers come to the unit, and couldn't get my head round the fact that they didn't have any objectives for their time spent with us.
Most thought they'd get to cuddle the babies. |
