This is outrageous discrimination...I mean it's fine if you're a pilot what about the Rest of us .. |

Is it madness? I recall back in my youth that a guy at my college with went to Asda everyday for 2 years to get his lunch & didn’t pay for it once. Just walked right out the store, never got caught.
If you’re paying for your food as you should what’s the issue? |

Gotta admire your friend's commitment, every day for two years!
I think the issue is the idea that you are held hostage unless you make a purchase. Like sometimes I may go in for one thing, not find it and walk out again. In the scenario above I'd have to find and talk to security to let me out. Maybe next step they'll ask for a bag search & pat-down in case I'm smuggling out some taste-the-difference. |

"It's only in a couple of stores in London, and it's only for the self checkout area!
Apparently this is quite common in France and Germany."
Nope, its already started at my local Sainsbury's in Luton.
But as you say, it is only the self checkout |

If they are going to employ sufficient staff, it's better than deploying technology, to enforce store jail.
And if they guarantee stock held and no payment queues, its possible to be worth consideration.
But it's perhaps Holborn, and trying to cut employment, increase customer income, etc
I would probably avoid like the plague |

First I've heard of it bu as others have said it's only on the self checkout areas so makes sense as I see loads of shop lifters, nobody wants to stop them as it's a h&s risk. Why should honest people pay for the shrinkage. |

i was quite confused in Spain having to scan a receipt to leave a supermarket, then finding i was supposed to have told someone i was parked in the carpark so they would print the Barrier pincode on my receipt as well - they dont print the code on your receipt unless you ask. |

The tills are in a separate cornered off area, with barriers out. So unless you go through there, you can get out |

Because the barriers are just at the end of the till’s. So when you buy something you just scan the receipt and it opens the barrier.
When you just browse and don’t buy anything you don’t walk through the tills, you just go out the shop & don’t walk through the till area…

Yes that’s what I reckon they’ve implemented it for, as the self scan was open before if I remember correctly without barriers. |

This. Sometimes I pop in for something specific, and they don’t have it.
Also the beepers always go off if you buy small clothing items and go through the self checkout because they cba to clear the integrated tags off. |

Common in supermarkets in the Netherlands and works fine once you remember to take your receipt. They do spot checks to stop the paying for one item and taking 10 items for nowt |

It just means that more receipt will be printed for no good reason. What is the carbon footprint on this?
Tom will tell you. A carbon footprint the size of the elephants pawprint in the room. The 'if you have nothing to hide' brigade will be wringing their hands in delight over this. Infringements of civil liberties start like this. Now it is scanning a till receipt but one day we could be asked to scan photographic ID.
Tom would like to start new movement. Just Stop Till Receipts. |

I literally saw this title and thought that's got to be Essex Tom and behold I was right.
As for the till receipt scanning, they already do this at Primark, Ikea and Amazon Fresh.
At 40, I decided that I'm too old to stand in the way of "progress" and let them youn'uns have at it. I survived this long without worrying about what supermarkets do. Long may that continue.

Just to calm peoples nerves, im not long back from shopping at Sainsbury's.
I used the self-checkout. Used my receipt to open the barrier. No issue at all.
Its only a basic waist high barrier, the same as you go through going into some shops.
You can easily push them open.
But, as someone pointed out earlier on, it prints out a full receipt, so uses more paper.
Hopefully they'll arrange a more eco-friendly option.
Even just a small printout of the bar code would save lots of paper. |

Reminds me of a time I went into a department store and the alarm went off as I left. Security checked my bag, found nothing and I said it was probably books I’d bought (was at uni at the time). Wasn’t the books. Guard said ‘whatever you have just take it!’ When I got home at the bottom of my bag I found a security sticker that had come out (from a book). Still can’t forget that he assumed I was guilty. |

My local Asda which is a huge store they no longer have any check outs at all. It's all self service or scan as you go. |

Sainsburys Wolverhampton have had this in place for a lifetime. It automatically prints the receipt at self service. Scan your receipt and the barrier opens. Don’t see an issue with it personally. |

Would be interesting. Say you refused to show your receipt, they can't detain you on the fact that you don't have a receipt.
Unless you have sufficient proof that someone has taken something, IE CCTV or security seen you take the item, seen you didn't make an attempt to pay for it and know where the item is on your person, it's against the law to arrest/detain somebody.

I'm not sure if anything has changed, its been a few years since I worked in retail security, but there used to be five point check to go through before you could reasonably ask someone to stop if you think they are shoplifting...
1. Selection of item (scanning the shelves)
2. Picking item (taking it in hand)
3. Concealing item
4. Passing last point at which they could possibly pay for item
5. Attempting to leave.
As most stores have a kiosk somewhere near the entrance, the usual modus operandi was to approach once they stepped over the threshold of the doorway.
Personally, unless they want to pay me to scan my items, I dont do self-checkout, and I won't be getting a receipt to exit the building either, and I think they would be on dodgy ground trying to stop me.

"If you're not stealing then it shouldn't worry or bother you in the slightest "
It does concern me that apparently so many people steal that precautions need to be taken against me. I'm not stealing and I don't buy into the if you haven't done anything wrong you've got nothing to worry about argument. I'm already checked on CCTV, security guards are on the door in our local Primark, if I use a self service check out I'm filmed, now I need to scan a receipt as yet another proof that I haven't pinched anything? |

Exactly. But I still don't understand how scanning a receipt after using the self service checkout prevents people stealing. All it proves is that you've paid for something not everything. |

This has been the case at IKEA self serve till for years.
Takes a mere second to scan a receipt and if we've been and not bought anything then we don't go through the self serve till so aren't affected.
They spot check people to make sure they've scanned all their items. And I've seen several times people try the 'ooh sorry, must have accidentally missed that one' line when being spot checked, so sadly it seems to be a necessary process.

My god reading this thread has seriously knocked my confidence in humankind.
Firstly it's the whole why should I scan document. What do you do at passport control? Refuse?
Secondly it's againsty civil liberties, what do you do if you need to show a bank statement as proof of address for a credit agreement?
Thirdly if you ever use self-service and buy alcohol do you get annoyed that the checkout person needs to check your shopping?
Lastly are you all so dodgy that you have to hide?? |

Spurious beyond spurious ......
1. A supermarket checkout is NOT an international border.
2. No one is asking for credit - they have paid for their goods and have a receipt.
3. Demonising people by suggesting they are 'dodgy' is the favourite mode of those without reasonable argument.

Apparently this is quite common in France and Germany.
Nope, its already started at my local Sainsbury's in Luton.
But as you say, it is only the self checkout"
So if you don't buy anything you don't go through the self checkout and don't need a receipt. Logical.

I do love how people private message their opinions to you rather than put it on here where it should be.
This has been going on in various shops for months so it's not a new thing. If you can't wait 2 seconds for a receipt to print out you will be more inconvenienced stood by the exit trying to prove you paid for your shopping.

Makes you wonder how anybody worrying about something so trivial made it through a pandemic? As many have already stated it exists in many shops and many other countries already.
If you don't like it, shop, or more likely shoplift somewhere else.
God only knows what panic attacks you'll have at a train station where there are ticket barriers at both ends of your journey, if this basic concept inside a supermarket is causing such fear.
Next...fear mongering topic please.... |

1. Correct maybe I should have said what do you do when collecting an order from Argos.
2. The point is showing a receipt is hardly anything that is against your civil liberties.
3. My point is if you have nothing to worry about then scanning your receipt shouldn't be an issue.
But I see that no argument to having things like alcohol being checked as issue yet not too far from the same reason to check. |

Because if you purchase the items in Sainsbury's, they are recorded on your Nectar card.
So no need for a receipt.
You used to have the option if you wanted a receipt printed or not. But now its printed automatically if using the self service

Maybe next step they'll ask for a bag search & pat-down in case I'm smuggling out some taste-the-difference."

This thread has made me realise why my local Morrisons installed barriers at the exit from the self scan area a few months ago - they haven't yet implemented scanning a receipt to leave the area but I now won't be surprised when they do. Not a problem for me as I always get a receipt anyway to keep track of my spending. |

I notice posters are saying about receipts to get out. My local Lidl which is about ten minutes walk from my house. You have to go in thru the ‘ in door’ then another ‘ in door’ . So cannot go back out both doors unless someone else entering store. Exit is one door out, past either the checkouts , if not open a barrier or thru self checkouts which has a staff person in case of verifying age etc.
The Aldi a bit farther away has one entrance and one exit. So to get out means either waiting for someone coming in or going thru checkouts.
Both have security cameras pointing at entrance and exit doors .
I use my local superstore most Fridays when they open . So have most times to use self checkouts. Trouble is if like today I buy something that ‘ triggers ‘ over 18 sale . Have to wait for a person to come and do a code to say ok. This before can pay etc. Plus there are cameras on each self service checkout .
My other thought. If buying online , do people complain on ‘checkout’ having to wait and then confirm to your bank that it is you who is buying an product ? |

No problem. It's normal Costco do the same since they opened.
It's even normal in other countries. Prevents theft. Hopefully they soon will invent a tag that when scanned at the till deactivates so can go through the exit no need. |

Because the shoplifters will suddenly develop a conscience and put things back or pay for them? Whilst the others will just queue up and show the security bloke their receipt so he can rifle through their bags... Its progress granny |

They have trollies that lock the wheels if you leave and return.
I got to the carpark and realised I had forgotten to stop to get something from the separate little desk by the door. Went back in and got stuck leaving the 2nd time.... |

It won't prevent all so much as deter a few.
They'll have done the figures, balanced out the potential losses and obviously the powers-that-be have figured the uptick from the added convenience outweighs the risk and losses |

What kind of wizardry is built into a sainsbury's trolley? Are they disposable and single use only? |

Tom is a big fan of Liverpool but he remembers hearing about a Scouser who took his trolley full of heavy shopping home with the intention of returning the trolley. He brought his last shopping bag into the house and when he went back outside to return the trolley he found that someone had stollen the wheels and left the trolley propped up on house bricks. He went back into the house to telephone the police. Shortly after he went outside again and someone had stollen the bricks... |
