So so sad. RIP adventurous children, and thanks to our brave emergency services for doing their best to save young lives. If you have children who are likely to try playing on lakes, frozen or otherwise, please have a word.

Honestly I can't even comprehend what the families must be going through and also those that tried to save them.

you can have the conversation about not standing on frozen water all you like but the problem is it happens every year this is just a particularly harrowing case as so many were involved. I guess people just don't think it's going to happen to them.

Profoundly sad. Kids will be kids I guess, we all did risky things and 99.9% of the time get away with it. They were desperately unlucky. Huge shout-out to the public and police who entered the lake trying to save them.

It's still not clear if there's anyone else in the water.

Let's pray not. I heard the Police spokesman say there was nobody unaccounted for earlier this pm.

That's good news at least and hope that's the case. I think the difficulty was witnesses couldn't be sure exactly how many children there were plus some had gone in to help so at least everybody is now accounted for.

Gateway to the Beacons

I wild swim all year, on a group I am a member of this was posted the other day by a friend

In a similar vein, you’ll notice the photo below…there are clear footprints on the ice. When I spoke to some of the girls this morning they’d seen parents encouraging their young child to walk on the ice, and when they advised against it the parents stated “well, he can swim”. Please do not walk on ice, whether you can swim or not is not the issue, cold water shock and drowning is. Please be safe in this weather guys, and if in doubt avoid the pond until the ice has cleared.

Unfortunately these sort of things happen...all part of being a child and growing up...I myself lost a brother at the age of 7, he and a few others were playing chicken on a dual carriageway..sadly he lost.

Very sad. This is why our Emergency Services need better paying. We see more in 1 year than you guys see in 10 lifetimes.

It’s just heartbreaking but children don’t see the danger. Even this is all over the news 3 lads were stood on a lake in York attempting to break the ice with their scooters. Thankfully police intervened.

RIP little fellas

Well done to the police officers who plunged into the frozen water to attempt rescue despite not being suitably attired or equipped unthinking bravery so sad they were largely in vain .

I've followed this since it was announced, so sad I just hope with them continuing searching they don't come across anymore as they believe we're around 8 children that were playing close to the lake

In my early teenage years, me and my friends would dare each other to sit on window ledge outside my bedroom window. Top floor of tenement building. Then we escalated to sitting on window ledge and closing the window behind you.

Years later it still gives me the shivers thing about it and how lucky we were.

Call it foolishness, ignorance, lack of awareness of danger. But when your younger, you don't listen and think your invincible. Also a lot of trying to fit with your peer group pressure.

Thats why every year you get these types of incidents, in the hot weather has well when everybody is just jumping into the water too.

Wow, it's very worrying that a new craze is forming whereas some will think that it couldn't happen to them. Think it's something that should be brought up in schools educationally like they did with sex education highway code

Public information films are on DVD under the Charley Says titles.

This should be the sort of thing that should go viral.

I've just seen this tonight. I was in tears. It's just incredibly sad and I can't begin to comprehend how parents cope loosing a child. I'll be hugging my children a little longer tonight.

As if this could get any sadder, 3 of the kids were from one family. 2 brothers and a cousin. Utterly heartbreaking.

I don't think its a new craze... kids used to do it when I was a child. In fact we used to take skates to our local pond in the depth of winter and skate on ours. There was always a ring on a rope and thankfully we never had an incident. ..
