Recommendations for good pubs to eat in please?
Covent garden area
Obviously most are going to pretentious and expensive but if anyone knows of any hidden gems good food, good atmosphere and dare I say not so expensive that I need to sell an internal organ to finance a lunchtime meal.

Very near Holborn station you have Shakespeare's Head Wetherspoon, and then there is another, Cross Keys, I think, near Leadenhall Market/The Shard. It's a Wetherspoon so you know what you're getting, and the prices are very reasonable. |

It depends what part of Central London, around Kings Cross it's about £5 for a pint. |

Your statement is untrue as there are plenty of pubs/ restaurants in central London that serve really good food at really good prices it just depends on whether you go to the pretentious places or not. |

Both good choices, especially the Porterhouse, it’s a maze! I’d also throw in the lamb & flag, think it’s one of the oldest in London. Cross Keys is also good.  |

And the Maple Leaf, Canadian themed bar.
Both good choices, especially the Porterhouse, it’s a maze! I’d also throw in the lamb & flag, think it’s one of the oldest in London. Cross Keys is also good. "

I had chicken with mash and peas in a Wetherspoons recently that was lovely and loads of chicken. |

I had chicken with mash and peas in a Wetherspoons recently that was lovely and loads of chicken. "
I quite like weatherspoons for quick, easy food because They do the smaller portions on most of their meals which is ideal for me. |

To be fair, if I was in central london and wanted a good meal I wouldn’t eat in a pub, average / poor roasts / fish and chips for tourists ….. far better to got to one of the abundant amazing restaurants (Chinatown? - not sure if that was what was meant? |

Nor would I. There are loads if good places to eat near Covent Garden rather than pubs |

Most of the food in Weatherspoons is fried or microwaved. Buying cheap food comes at a cost to farmers and your bodies. Weatherspoons is a cost conscious business. They cut corners and you’re shovelling in crap.
If you want decent quality pub food, there are plenty of quality pubs such as : Green King, assortment of independent pubs across London.
If you come to London why on earth are you seeking a English pub. Plenty of other options in the city. |

There's a pie and mash place just off Carnaby Street, it's not authentic though!

We've eaten in The Wellington a few times, never had a bad meal.
End of the Strand, straight across Waterloo Bridge, not far from The Savoy.
Or keep walking up from Waterloo Bridge into Covent Garden, lots of really nice Italian restaurants just before you hit Covent Garden.
