I make them as follows:

4oz sr flour

2oz suet

Salt, pepper, herbs to taste

Just enough water to bring the mixture together as a soft dough.

Divide into 8 and pop onto the top of the stew for 20-30 minutes x

^^ exactly this you can also make them with butter or margarine but they aren't as nice.

Also, instead of making dumplings, you can flatten the dough and put it on top of your casserole, leaving the lid off, and bake for 30 or so minutes.
