Yes....... What's the worst that can happen...... My mate was a freight aircraft pilot then got himself a small is it cesna, so he had a flight simulator on his laptop which I got to use and was quite capable of landing the plane |

I flew aeroplanes for fun and aeroplanes and helicopters for a living (Am I a professional?...whole other thread). To be fair, most able bodied and well co-ordinated people could fly a small aeroplane. Larger and performance aircraft are a bit to a lot more involved but the actual basics aren't hard. |

I could definitely land one, whether it would be in one piece, the right way round or anyone survive is another question. I've flown/landed a light aircraft solo as a teen, but that means nothing when it comes to jumbos :D |

"If you was called up on to land an aircraft in an emergency with the help of air traffic control, would you be able to land the aircraft?
"
As someone who holds a private pilots licence for a light aircraft I can tell you not there is not a chance in hell a random member of the public could land a commercial aircraft manually. |

"Definitely, but I’m a qualified pilot.
The principle is pretty much the same for a Cessna and a larger aeroplane, just more switches and buttons. "
It’s definitely not that simple. Landing a Cessna is much more forgiving in terms of approach, you could sit it down on the last 1/4 of the runway, not in a jumbo |

Have to agree with this synopsis though any paraglider will tell you air speed + bravery - walkie talkies / long straight = plumb landing |

If there was no one more qualified to then I would step up, it is unlikely to be the prettiest of landings but I’m confident I could put it on the tarmac and eventually bring it to a stop somewhere. |

Depends on the aircraft. A Cessena propeller driven light aircraft yes I probably could. A jet airliner with help from the control tower maybe. |

Only if the landing gear needs to be manually dropped also and there is a snow airfield nearby and there are lots on the plane and there is a terrorist and throw some snakes in as well...sorry...im getting mixed up with films I think. |

I didn’t say it would be simple. I said ‘the principle is pretty much the same’ |

That’s like saying the principle is the same for driving a F1 car and a ford fiesta, yet I guarantee you anyone in a F1 car for the first time would stall before ever moving off the line. A civilian trying to land 737 for example would have nothing more than a better view of there impending death. |

Unless they gave me exact instructions, I wouldn't even know where to find the plane's gearstick
If it was just pushing a stick down at the right moment, I think I'd still struggle, let alone, being in a cockpit with a thousand buttons.
Even if I did get it down, I don't think it would fly again |

Interesting question Wikipedia says there is no record of it ever happening in a large commercial aircraft.
I'd like to think that I could stay calm and follow instructions... but it would be a huge ask. |

As they say. If you want to know what all those knobs in the cockpit do, just ask them.. |

Me neither, but her previous sex life wasn't with me so I didn't care, but she seemed very excited with her flying experience! |

Placed slowly and gently on the floor in a straight line principle. Simples |

Using help from atc & tower, and on an aircraft that has autopilot & autoland, yes. I think that I would be able to follow the instructions & configure the aircraft to land.
Once on the ground it’s brakes all the way……..
If it was the last resort, I’d be the first to volunteer. |

I look at it like this
The options
1 your gonna crash
2 if there’s a fighting chance I’ll give it my best shot !
I can’t swim very well but if the boat I was on was sinking I’m wouldn’t stay on it until it hit the sea bed ! |

Time would tell. I would have a bloody good try when faced with death. |

After many hours playing on various flight simulator games on the PC I'd have slight more confidence than if I hadn't played them but you don't get the feel of 40 mph cross winds while sitting in your living room so the whole thing could turn into disaster really |

I’ve done the famous Kai Tak approach in a full sized/motion 747 simulator once, that was fun. Okay someone else did the throttles/flaps etc but I got it down. It was always a dream of mine after being a krypton factor fan.
Also I have done a solo flight in a glider in my younger days thanks to being in the Air Cadets |

Very possibly, I think it must have either been ‘93 or ‘94 when I did my BGT. I’ll have to dig out my logbook and check |

I wonder if I flew with you lol just checked my logbook . It was ze533 that I solo’d in during sept ‘94. Still remember that flight like it was yesterday. Got towed back to the flight line , did checks for next launch and instructor just said “I think you’ve got it now, off you go” and jumped out. I was so nervous ! |

It would be a very dire situation if I was their only option; but yeah, I'd do it; let's face it, if I was being asked to fly the plane, everyone is pretty much as good as dead already so I couldn't make things any worse; at least I would've died trying to save myself and others instead of just letting it happen. |

maybe used to play flight simulator for hours each day, loved landing the big aircraft, also pretty good in any flying games.
but truth is most people would not be able to, even with the knowledge of flight simulator or movies or games, it would be pretty hard and high chances you would crash or drop out of the sky because wrong set up, speed, flaps, its not entirely like a joy stick and push a button then slow down to land.
another thing is if you were called up everyone on the plane would say they can fly it, so probably you wouldnt get picked |
