Morning.

My local team are losing 4 players next season because of the salary cap to French teams. My opinion is that it’s going to ruin our domestic league.

What do you think ?

Consider the alternative.

The rich clubs getting the cream of domestic players, winning everything and making competition pointless. Look at football.

I really don't know the answer. Plenty of players already head abroad off for experience so the potential to earn more is an attractive prospect for them.

Lifting the salary cap may help. Removing it may ruin the game just as much as having it.

Its a commercial world.

If you had the talent and skills these guys had, and knowing the career is fairly short with a high risk of career ending injuries would you stay under a salary cap or would you go for the best earnings on offer?

If they don't remove the cap then the cream of players will not be here, they will (rightly IMHO) go for the best they can get.

For the game right or wrong who knows.

not a big rugby fan but it seems the domestic game is struggling to run it's books sensibly.

Is the French doemstic game more popular and so able to support higher wages?

It’s fairly complicated… partly about how professionalisation happened, partly about popularity and partly about a better run league system with a very lucrative long-term tv deal. Several clubs in the Top 14 are underwritten by local government too.

COVID seems to have much more severely affected English clubs, perhaps because they were already overloaded with debt, like Wasps, or because they are being treated simply as assets, like Worcester.

I have a season ticket for Bristol. We have over 10k season ticket holders, Ashton Gate is used by both football & rugby, has concerts etc. The club does a lot with commercial activities, as well as community outreach, and there is consistently one of the highest average attendances at the ground. Yet still unable to make a profit.

At the same time the best players can earn more in France and Japan. Bristol are subsidised by a billionaire, Lansdowne, who is totally open about not being able to do it forever. Plus quite a few of those very highly players don’t seem especially good in terms of ROI.

I don’t have a clue how to solve it. I do think that there is a difficult balance to be achieved… English/British clubs need to be able to hold on to top talent or there won’t be a coherent national side, but the league and the game need to be sustainable. Very hard to see how at the moment…
