Greatest Guitar Solos
Jump to: Newest in thread
There're many to choose from and obviously there are no "best" guitar solos... Aside from the ones I like
Pick your three favourites and name the player(s) if you like
Here are mine:
Stranger in a Strange Land - Iron Maiden (Adrian Smith)
Bat Out of Hell - Meat Loaf (Todd Rundgren)
Tornado of Souls - Megadeth (Marty Friedman)

What does the question mean.. is it most memorable… most technically demanding?
I know it’s not one by l’il Wayne or Kanye
Memorable for me is one that elevates the song and doesn’t distract from it - so Hotel California is up there as is Parisian Walkways
Comfortably Numb… Albatross… all great work
Will watch this one |

"Comfortably Numb, Dave Gilmour"
quote]
this is a good one
Also, since I’ve been loving you , Led zeppelin & November rain, Guns n roses.
But also there’s the Metallica Justice for all album and Sepultura first album; there’s just too many to choose from there |

Why are you so perfect by the way? |

"No one mentioned Steve Vai or Yngwie Malmsteen yet - John Petrucci? All amazing players in different ways Nuno Bettencourt, Michael Schenker, Richie. Blackmore? This could take several threads "
Agreed. There is an incredible amount to choose from.
I am keeping tally too |

Obviously David Gilmore - comfortably numb (seriously if you've not watched it live, pulse I think, then you're robbing yourself)
And these pair. Don't know their names but fuck me, how they have fingertips is beyond me.....

All depends on what is meant as a guitar "solo". Hotel California and Freebird (to mention just two) are interplay between two or more guitars. For a pure "solo" guitar solo I'll put forward Still In Love With You by Thin Lizzy and Only You Can Rock Me, Rock Bottom and Lights Out by UFO.

I'm going to be boring and plump for Comfortably Numb and Hotel California BUT my third choice, which may surprise people is Goodbye to Love by the Carpenters. There are two seriously amazing solos in this song and the outro is fantastic. Also love the solo in Crying to the Sky by Be Bop De Luxe.

"Prince doing While My Guitar Gently Weeps at the George Harrison tribute concert.
This is the only correct answer and people really should check it out "
Absolutely true and brings me to tears every single time I watch it |

"Gary Moore hands down . . . I can't think of anything that he didn't do well but The Prophet is up there along with Parisienne Walkway & the whole of the Wild Frontier album "
Yes Gary Moore, Totally agree.
3 times I saw him live, Wild Frontier extended version 1987, still play it in the car. |

I often burst Mr KC'S eardrums in the car playing the album
Must have been amazing to hear him live - what an experience |

Lots of brilliant ones have already been mentioned, so the following three are necessarily my favourites EVER; just some not mentioned yet.
Jonny Greenwood, Just and Paranoid Android.
Jimi Hendrix,Star-spangled Banner.
Mark Knopfler,Telegraph Road.
And if non-rock guitar is allowed, Paco Peña doing his own solera. God damn, the duende. |

Okay so I've been tallying up as people have been dropping in their favourite solos. No real reason behind it, the point of this thread is not for votes to be cast, I just like to see the numbers.
So far 71 different tracks have been mentioned.
Below are the ones mentioned most. The top three are what I thought would likely be most popular. Surprised to see Prince's solo getting so much recognition, it's a fantastic solo, just didn't think it was that popular.
Comfortably Numb - 9
Hotel California - 4
Free Bird - 4
Parisian Walkways - 4
While my Guitar Gently Weeps (prince) 4
I'm making a small list of solos I'm shocked haven't made it into this thread yet.

Not a massive fan of yawning guitar solos... Though recognise the skill and talent required. Ones that connect to emotions stand out for me.. Scott gorhams efforts on still in love with you off the live and dangerous album stands out... Amongst many others. But plenty of the old blues and soul guitarists have a lot right up there too... |

Don’t really like Adam Levine or Maroon 5. But Adam Levine cover of Prince’s - Purple Rain on the Howard Stern show is a top cover. And Adam does a good cover of the guitar solo in that too |

First mention of Purple Rain on this thread and it's not even the original. I'll have to strike it from my list of solos no one's mentioned yet |

"Actually Princes guitar solo on While My Guitar Gently Weeps is Sublime
Is that the one where his guitar disappears at the end? "
He chucks it on the floor at the end of the song, I think he did this often at the end of shows |

Floods by Pantera, Dimebag Darrell does the solo outro to this and for me is up in my top 3 all time.
Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd, 9 minutes of guitar porn but the whole final 4 minutes is a blood sacrifice to the guitar solo gods.
Breadfan by Budgie, not strictly a solo but Tony Bourge strokes that lump of wood to produce the finest guitar riff consistently for 6 minutes and 11 seconds of the greatest guitar masterclass of all time. |
