I like him, do you? Have he found the perfect formula to win the games and could england win the world cup? I think that there are a chance of it and the game against france will be a good test to see if they have what it takes, the waiting is to see |

I like a man that's in control.
David doesn't seem the type to be honest.

I don’t like the guy.
I’m not entirely sure he even picks the squad.
I’ve heard an interview some where recently that said the England team is chosen by a committee and he is told who to play and do they best with it. |

He's a lucky manager as he's has had the best squad of English players since 1970 and really with the world class talent that is available and the fortunate way the knock out rounds unfolded in the last World Cup and the Euros, England should have won both. We didn't because of Southgate's negative selections and tactics
This world cup, again England have beaten sides they should be beating comfortably
The big test of Southgate's progression will be on Saturday as France are a different class altogether to what England have faced so far

He isn't a genius but he has been a very good manager for England.
They are probably the most likable iteration of your national team I can remember.
They have been pretty successful.
He is limited tactically but I wouldn't be sure a better tactical manager would have gotten the same results out if this team |

While he may be the most successful manager the England team have had since 1966, I wouldn't go as far as to describe him as a genius.
Albert Einstein was a genius
Prof. Stephen Hawking was a genius |

In all honesty if Senegal were half decent and had a decent striker (Mane) they could easily have been 3-nil up in the first 30 mins .
They won’t be afforded that luxury when they play France as I can’t see mbappe missing them clear cut chances.

I'm in my fifties and without doubt this is the most successful English team I can remember.
When England fail, people blame the manager so why is it that with the most successful English team in nearly 60 years you aren't praising the manager?
Football fans are a funny lot. |

I like him, have done ever since he missed that penalty.
England always have a good squad and it's laughable they have never won anything so even if he does, I don't think that makes him a genius.
Take a Championship club up into the Premier league, keep them there and then onto champions league and I think that qualifies you. |

Gareth Southgate is a good manager and is England most successful manager since Sir Alf Ramsey. However if he wins this World Cup with Pickford in goal Maguire, Stones , Shaw in defence then he deserves to be considered a genius. My personal opinion France to beat England on Saturday as I can’t see England defence keeping out Mbappe and Dembele. |

Have you watched any champions league football the last couple of seasons?
Man City have played PSG four times and in each one Kyle Walker has pocketed Mbappe
France's front line isn't the concern. The worry is the centre midfield battle and if Rice and Henderson are up to it |

Yes Walker has played Mbappe very well but what about the other flank do you think Shaw will handle Dembele as well as Walker has handled Mbappe. From what I have seen in this World Cup Mbappe could dominate it the way Maradona did in 86 and the Brazilian Ronaldo in 02.Yes centre midfield will probably be where the battle is won and lost |

"His last game as a manager will be this Saturday... Going to be a humiliation 4-1 "
I hate to say it, as I'd love England to go further, but we have a team of superb players hampered by a 2nd rate manager.
We should have won the Euros, but he was too defensive minded against a team of older players who should have had their legs run off by a young England team.
Hopefully the next manager will be more offensive minded. |

Walker is way off the pace. If he was fully fit it would be a good battle.
Southgate will go 3 CBs and wingbacks Walker and tripper will double team mbappe |

Bellingham, fully fit Walker, arguably Kane. Maybe Foden.
With alot of players quote close. No team at the world cup is jammed full of world 11 players |

Can't argue with kanes stats. He's playing well for a central midfielder. But would you have him over mbappe as a 9? Anyway he's alright. Just trying to make the point that we seem to blow our players abilities out of all proportion and use the words world class way too liberally. Either way... We have a tough job beating the French. |

Harsh.
France are a very good team even without a few world class players. On paper better than England. The difference probably wasn't as big on the pitch. I was surprised how well England took parts of the games to France. By and large England toe to toed them.
They chased the equaliser well without giving up space at the back to allow a third.
Had the pen or the free kick gone in history would be looking different. Or MAguirre's header been inches closer.
Frances second came from a momentary lapse from Maguire. Given the stick he has and how exposed he can look at utd, Southgate has done well to find a way of playing that allowed him to look solid.
Imo Greal isn't a last minute game changer anyway. So I'm not sure what ppl really want from Southgate. |

Or if Pickford had saved that shot.
Too many ifs, too many ors.
England had to be better 2nd half and were. That was England's best squad and yet France were missing a few.

"He isn't great at using his subs.... Make better calls earlier. who and when ?
"
Needed to get our most talented midfielder involved in the game, so that meant switching Foden into the middle for Henderson and then bringing Grealish or Rashford on
When England raised the pace of the game and played passes quickly we were far more threatening and that's what Foden would have done
And taking Saka off was a stupid decision as he was our biggest threat in the second half
It's hard to place any blame on Maguire for France's second goal. It was an excellent cross and very difficult to defend against. If anything, Rice should have gone with Giroud

" fair enough. So starting to push harder for a win in the last ten when it was 1-1 rather than 2-1 down. As a counter, that could have been quite an exposed midfield for 40 more mins. It would have been a gamble.
Agree with Saks although I'd need to go back and remind myself if he was still causing issues or had tired off. |

Well... From the armchair expert here... Its not just this game. He tends to leave his tactical interventions very late in the game in all games. But Not sure I'd have had sterling on the pitch at all, or mount.. Probably would have left our best player (Saka) on... And if you're putting grealish on.. Give him more than 2 minutes to achieve an outcome. But Southgates a well qualified international coach and I'm a TV remote consultant. |

Not a criticism but more of a question. If we can play like we did last night. Which was a great game to watch. Why have we served up such, passive, slow, tortuous, mediocre fair in so many of our matches.? Maybe its evolution of the team and this is how we will play with this squad hence forward? Here's hoping. |

I think sometimes it's the event and what's at the end that motivates a better performance. Last night, the stakes were high. Glory at the end. But a Tuesday night friendly against the Faroe Islands? Less so. |

Looking in from the outside England play the most exciting brand of counter attacking football. If teams don't come at them they then play side ways football.
Look at some of the results of this calendar year and last night was to be expected really

"He isn't great at using his subs.... Make better calls earlier. who and when ?
Needed to get our most talented midfielder involved in the game, so that meant switching Foden into the middle for Henderson and then bringing Grealish or Rashford on
When England raised the pace of the game and played passes quickly we were far more threatening and that's what Foden would have done
And taking Saka off was a stupid decision as he was our biggest threat in the second half
It's hard to place any blame on Maguire for France's second goal. It was an excellent cross and very difficult to defend against. If anything, Rice should have gone with Giroud
What he said ^" need to find a better angle for the goal, but would query why rice has giroud. THE shape went, similar to the chance just before. Greizman caused Maguire to have to shift leaving giroud. It's DM \ CB organisation. It's tha triangle which is England's only weakspot imo. And it got caught a few times. |

Something I've seen on Facebook I thought I would add to this thread:
England Record since 2008.
Euro 08 - Didn't Qualify
WC 10 - Last 16
Euro 12 - Quarters
WC 14 - Group stage
Euro 16 - Last 16
Southgate
WC 18 - Semi
Euro 20 - Final
WC 22 - Quarters
On that, you should do Al you can to persuade him to stay |

I agree, I don't get people that say he's not a good manager and we all know the first goal should have been chalked off for one of the many fouls on Saka and should have had a penalty after and probably been 1-0 England at half time.
Considering they were playing against current holders and the ref, linesman and var all seemed to be suffering with intermittent blindness I think England done well and they can hold heads high |

International management is a completely different business than club management (only having the chance to work with your players for brief windows of time as compared to day to day). It's pretty clear GS is well suited to this and by anyones metric is / has done an amazing job changing the culture around the England team. Considering Englands track record over the past 50 odd years I have no idea why people expect us to steamroller all opposition regardless of the facts ('English exceptionalism' I suspect). I think the majority of people who have an issue with GS are protesting against his politics more than anything. |

There's many of us not in that 'all' category
Players and manager seem quiet on that subject aswell.
While I think there was something very very dodgy in Qatar being awarded the hosting of the competition I don't think there was anything suspect in this game other than bad decisions by the officials, as many other games including the previous nights games had demonstrated.
He still gave x2 penalties, many yellow cards to France and an extra 8 minutes of added time for England to get that goal. Even accepting the advice of VAR to have a look at a missed foul and over turning his decision.
If your suggesting the ref isn't a genius, I agree. |

Think the players are getting away with it ... One missed a 24 by 8 ft net from 36 feet... I mean completely missed it. Not many of our players are as good as we are told by the media. Not many of our players have ever won anything. Not many of our players shown the mettle to win... Other than Henderson and Bellingham.
1. Who better is available and would do better than Southgate.?
2. Are we better now than we were 4 years ago, are we progressing and is our trajectory in the right direction.?
3.is the group including players and manager learning and getting better at each attempt?
4. Is anyone perfect and play the perfect game each time (except morrocco).
For sure Southgates game management is suspect and not instinctive. But he's better than he was and next time will be even better. This is real life not fifa 2023 on the xbox. |

If you think of the latest euros and wc we have had reasonable easy groups in the euros played everygamr at Wembley,i world cup all games were played in the coolest part of the day.As soon as we play someone decent we fall down.but its a great squad and hopefully keep improving maybe a top tactician may help. |

"But I'm guessing the woke part is your actual issue"
Yep, that's often what people think of Diversity and Inclusion... If you're talking about equality, then that means you're crap at your job. Inclusion is not a bolt on nice to have. If you source your team from the widest possible talent pool, and get your team to work inclusively well as a team, that's better than just sourcing from the "male, pale and stale" pool. |

What number is this in the never ending book of excuses for England's shortcomings?
It's right after the English entitlement thinking you should win any tournament "
Where have you pulled this supposed 'entitlement' from? |

Total with you mate. Harry Kane misses a penalty but somehow people blame Southgate. Its always the same, players are great but managers are hopeless. Even when they have been winners with other teams Cappello, Sven. Now Southgate is not a proven winner.
Apart from Brazil, England are probably the only country that thinks it has a god given right to win the world cup. But qt least they have the history and the record to justify the expectations.
England have one win on home soil. With the help of a favourable linemans decision and think they should just walk it. |

I like him. Although I think his substitutions in the game against France let us down. Should have changed it up at 1-1 not at 1-2. Other than that the players clearly work for him and he has made England a much more exciting watch than others |

With such a strong squad its easy to say, should of played him instead.
It came down to a spot kick, if that went in and then England got the winner in extra time or won on penalties everything is completely different. It should of gone in but didn't. He can't kick the ball for the players or blow the whistle for the ref.
I don't think he has peaked though.
I'd be doing my best to keep him today |

Take Messi and Mbappe out of their teams and on paper England have a better overall squad so then it has to come down to the fact that Southgate don’t know how to get the best out of them.
The FA love Southgate he’s perfect for them he says and does all the right things he didn’t set the world alight as a player and he definitely won’t as a manager. |

The issue I see with all England managers past and present is you have to deal with the hand you've got.
Klopp, Pep, Mourinho, Fergie et Al all had cash to splash. If they wanted a top draw 9 they'd buy one. Want Rio Ferdinand? British record transfer will get him.
You see my drift.
With England it's not quite square pegs round holes but you've got to find the best system for the 11 you start with to function. Is Saka's best position on the right? Should Kane drop deep or push on? Grealish on left or central?
I also agree with a previous comment about the English thinking we have the right to think we'll win every time. Media fuel this madness to fever pitch and happily slate all and sundry when it doesn't happen.
I personally think stick with Southgate until the end of the next tournament, move him upstairs to govern the FA. Then maybe Howe will have that much more knowledge under his belt and under Gareth's guidance get a 4 year contract |

"Bad news for England fans Southgate staying on he as done well but he cannot take England to the next level, to defensive and a tactical failure "
We don't have any players who would have got in either of the finalist teams. Stop being deluded we have a world class team. We don't. If we did. We'd have won more. We've 2 or 3 players who have great potential to step up and be world class. The rest are about average when compared to the other world Cup quarter finalists. Stones? Maguire? Shaw? Rashford? Sterling? Kane? Mount? Rice? Henderson? Grealish? Come on... Good players but none would get in today's teams. Apart from anything they were all running for 120 minutes. |

Today we have seen WC medals going to Brighton and villa.
Croatia and Morroco have shown what a team can do with cohesion.
That said, the current england team isn't defensivly solid enough, and not good enough going forward to make up for it. Give it a better CB pairing with a DM and it could be semis and beyond.

The point being.. Southgate has limitations. We have seen why teams got to the semis and final. They have better players and better managers. Who influence games and change tactics for better outcones in game. But.... I think Southgate and the team have a strong bond and should continue their journey together. Unless and until there is someone better available. None of the bookies had us as favourites to win it and they are never wrong. So not sure why people are surprised when we didn't win it. We just aren't thta special. Yet. We have potential. And we've done OK.. Beat the teams we should have. Now we must progress further. And I think we will of the media allow us to. |
