A discussion in work has lead to asking if there were any gay vikings. I can't imagine homosexuality would have been accepted in their culture, so it has me wonder if there were any that came out |

I imagine that there would be some, cant see tha every single viking that existed was 100%, they probely didnt come out though. Or maybe they just thought it was the norm. Could be why they raped and pilaged to prove they where straight |

There are a few references:
The priests of Freyr or Njorð, a fertility gods, were known to dress as women at times.
There are also law codes that deal with people calling you an 'ergiman' - a passive homosexual.
The same term was used in curses.
What the day to day attitude to it was we can only guess. |

I can't see why there wouldn't be any gay Vikings or why they would be afraid to come out.
Maybe people were more tolerant back then and just because your gay it doesn't mean you wouldn't be a good warrior.
Is the OP following the stereotype that homosexuals are all fairys and wimps ?
Surely to be a good Viking you only needed to be able to fight well and I'm sure gay men can fight as well.
And who said it was only the women who were raped. |

I never said that at all, I said culturally would they have come out?
Ancients Romans, Greeks and even Spartans were bisexual and there was no apparent problem with that in their culture.
But the imagery of vikings is more about drinking, fighting, raping and pillaging and I have never seen reference to homosexuality to vikings.

Greek homosexuality was encouraged in their army as it was thought that a man in love with another would fight harder to save him. In Roman times they were ambivilant and bisexuality was not considered odd. Have no idea about Vikings. Those of us who know a little Latin will spot the in-joke in this post. |

I know plenty of gay men who like a drink and a fight and if raping and pillaging wasn't so passé they might indulge in a bit of that too.

The first gay viking was short tongued.
It was documented that when he had been shagged by the 'straight' vikings he would often run around claiming 'I am thor...I am thor...thtop thticking it up.my arth!!'

Well said, one of the Icelandic Sagas reports a carving of two men, one behind the other, set up as an insult to one particular landowner.
Maybe they could be gay at sea, like many sailors were, and straight on land? Humans being what they are, there must have been some gays, but that doesn't mean they were any less brave. Gay sex was common in the ancient Greek army, and they saw off the Persians! |
