Ground breaking in computer games in the 80s.

Got ours from Woolworths on the never never.

One of our 1st games was Mr Wimpy.

Paid about £240 in 1984 for it.

I was a Speccy, wife was a Commie.

She still has her Commodore 64 in the loft, along with a load of games for it.

My Spectrum 128k+2 is also in the attic, getting dusted off every now and again for some nostalgic fun.

I had one, the built in cassette player to load games was a major plus.

A group of friends and me played Leaderboard Golf. We had a league set up between us.

There were magazines with programs printed, we once typed in pages of lines and it created a word processor called YC Writer.

I sold my C64 when I bought a 286 PC. Wish I'd kept it.

For a commodore 64 emulator, the best one to get by far is "WinVICE" (it's a free download for Windows, Mac etc). The c64 mini/maxi which was released a few years ago also uses winvice for its emulation, as does "c64 emu" Android app, although I think the android app costs about £5.

With the Amiga, you probably want to use "WinUAE" which is also a free Windows download, but it can be quite confusing to use if you're not used to using emulators.

I believe an Amiga Mini console (similar to the c64 mini) has been released in the past year, so that may be more accessible to those who don't have much experience using emulation, but obviously those c64/amiga mini console devices cost considerably more than the phone apps.

Bought the kids the AmstradCPC 464 when it was first released.

It had a full colour monitor and built in cassette. Trouble was, it was so new there were no games out for it.

We ended up spending weeks with computer magazines with basic games you could type in yourself. Absolute nightmare

especially when you realise what a heap of crap they all were.

Luckily for me I 'sat out' that phase of technology, largely due to the fact that I have never had the slightest interest in games of any sort.

later, I entered the already well established PC era with a series of 'hand me downs'. This happy situation continues and I now have more than I know what to do with.

Much the same with phones.

Speccy head here too. Did love that old rubber button 48k black blob

Worked out quite quickly how to dupe the tapes successfully, so did rather well topping up the pocket money selling hooky copies or charging people to copy their mates games (which I obviously copied for myself and sold on too). The highlight of my entire time at school was the various ‘shops’ I had on the go at different times- was like an episode of Grange Hill

Don't purchase anything! If you "expand" your googling you can find the all the kickstart ROMS online for free.

There's currently some weird licensing issue with the kickstart roms, with the current copyright holders (who are not the original developers BTW) really squeezing every last penny out of owning them. I think it's slightly unethical what they're doing.

The sound of a Spectrum loading in a game was used as background computer noise in Star Trek IV. Nothing spoils the mood after dangerously sling-shoting around the sun and emerging from time-warp than the sound of an 80s computer loading.
