Lets face it, the Christmas number one being hailed as the most important slot in the annual musical calendar is nothing but marketing guff to sell records and airplay.
If anything, its always been the least important one in terms of music, as back in the day when singles and CD's were the media of choice, you'd have your Aunty Brenda (or whoever) stressing over what to buy for a gift and hears that XYZ is what all the kids are listening to so buys a copy (which you say thankyou for if you were brought up properly). So basically, oodles of records were purchased and sent straight to the charity shop or jumble sale.
So while old Whitney may have sold x million copies of her warbling Christmas hit, a fairly large number of those went to people who were more interested in banging techno or indie, cos grandma didn't have a clue about music unless it was Perry Como |
