Long haul flights
Jump to: Newest in thread
I'm having to fly to Aussie this week, what a chore
I've never done a long haul flight before and not sure what to out in hand luggage other than wash stuff/a change of clothes/kindle.
What do you put in your hand luggage to make a long haul flight more bareable? Or any tips?
I don't sleep either when travelling |

I have done many long haul flights. Mainly to my late wife’s home country. I always ensured any valuables and electronics were in hand luggage. Yes a pain going thru security. But at least less chance of losing if main luggage lost. |

"Don't take water - security will remove it. You can buy it airside. Take a really, really good book!"
You can take an empty water bottle and fill at the water fountains through security |

If you don't sleep, make sure you get an aisle seat, you can then get up and wander at ease without disturbing the person who fell asleep on the aisle seat 5 mins after getting on the plane!
Also, prepare your best fuck off face incase your sat next to a knob who wants to talk constantly.....
Enjoy x |

Change of top (pants and socks too if you're feeling fancy), small pack of wet wipes, toothbrush and paste. Entertainment wise, a book, and tablet for films, along with a power bank; though on long hauls they usually have plenty of in flight film and TV, as well as USBs. Oooh, and slippers/ sliders are good for comfort too.

All of the above…. definitely socks, comfy clothes, headphones, music, puzzle book or doodle book, pen, pencil, page turning book, portable battery pack for phone/headphones/etc, favourite munchies something sweet get the saliva moving, nothing worst than dry mouth.
Good luck with it, as a sleeper I sleep most flights away

My long haul tips.
1) Choose a centre block aisle seat at the back. Good chance you'll get a spare seat.
2) Take an inflatable head support
3) Take kindle, books, puzzles
4) Have an eye mask
5) Have a few alcoholic drinks and try to sleep.
6) Drink plenty as you get to final approach.
7) For the inevitable jetlag use Melatonin, but sparingly. |

Never thought of putting socks in, thank you"
Could swear that many of the long haul flights we’ve been on have supplied socks with blankets and pillow.

They sometimes do but they are not soft and fluffy and usually a strange colour like green and red together I like my own white ones like the eye masks they give, to small and thin |

Hand sanitizer gel. Corsodyl mouthwash. Loperamide capsules. If you think that the food or cabin pressure variations are going to have fun with your bowels wear some incontinence knickers for peace of mind. Nothing like knowing you don't have to worry.
Don't forget condoms in case an attractive crew member invites you into the space beyond the curtains in the tail! |

Snacks incl. hard boiled sweets which are perfect for avoiding that horrible dry throat experience, comfy clothes, ear plugs & a good book...!
Take short breaks, exercise legs & maybe even watch a good movie - enjoy the journey & have a fab. time in Australia (is a beautiful diverse country). |

"Consider taking a proper pillow, even in business class seats.
The most comfortable clothing possible. Plus changes, including underwear. Some washing tools.
"
Washing tools made me laugh. Jot sure why I thought of a karcher |

The entertainment is usually excellent.
Baby wipes and deodorant in lieu of shower, pantyliners, you'll feel much better for it
Drink lots of water. You don't need to eat all the food they give you
Do the DVT exercises. |

"Ear plugs to cut out noisy passengers "
I wouldn't be without my noise cancelling headphones with or without an audio source, either of my choice or the on board entertainment.
When I switch them on I can almost hear them suck the engine noise away. You can still hear someone talking to you as that will be a more directional sound source. |

Comfiest clothes possible - I would choose leggings with a big slouchy hoodie
Fluffy socks for feeling cosy and then sliders for when you go to the bathroom
Change of underwear
Eye mask and travel pillow
Good headphones and download plenty of things to watch or read on an iPad/ kindle
Book and magazines
Body wipes, face wipes, hand sanitiser, toothbrush, toothpaste and a mini perfume to freshen up
I always pack a little makeup kit to touch up before I land
Hydrating eye drops, paracetamol, any medication
Mints, chewing gum, snacks, loads of water |

We'd recommend some antihistamines with sleepy side effects, get comfy with an eye mask, really good ear plugs, tell the stewards not to disturb you. Then try deep breathing to relax and then hopefully you'll nap.
Failing that a 3 movie strategy, plenty of snacks and booze.
Enjoy |

Sweets for the cabin crew
Seriously though:
Comfortable clothes
A warm jumper as can get cold on planes
Water drink lots of water, cabins are pressurised at 6/7,000ft
A refillable bottle for the above - the crew will happily refill your water bottle
Moisturiser/ lip balm - air con can dry your face lips esp if on an airbus
Airline might give out socks
Snacks/ food especially if have specific dietary needs or get super hungry/ don’t like the meal offerings
Don’t walk around bare foot/in socks.. or go to loo bare foot/ in socks - planes don’t get long to be cleaned between flights!
Er that’s all I can think of,
Oh a hot water bottle if you do suffer from being cold, again crew will pop “hot” water in it for you
Pillow, airline ones are shit in economy! |
