The axle. I would say the wheel, but they're useless without an axle. Just imagine where we'd be if it hadn't been invented.

Writing. The shift from verbal to recorded language enabled pretty much all the culture and technology that followed.

Glass.Virtually all our science which has led to the modern world uses glass. Chemistry with its test tubes and flasks and burettes and condensers etc. Biology with its microscopes. Astronomy with its telescopes. Then in our every day lives in cooking, eating, windows, cars, etc etc. |
