Brits will spend £1.3 billion on Christmas presents for dogs....

More than half (54 per cent) of Brits confessed to being worried about the cost of presents this year but dog owners in the UK are still expected to spend an average of £101 on gifts for their pets.

Nearly four in ten (38 per cent) admit to saving throughout the year to fund their dogs' presents while 36 per cent will cut back on how many people they give Christmas gifts to prioritise the canines.

Despite splurging on the dogs, two-thirds (66 per cent) of people agree that excessive spending isn't necessary.

In response to the findings, the charity Guide Dogs has created a series of tips and advice for people to make their own doggy gifts this festive season.

Helen Whiteside, Chief Scientific Officer for Guide Dogs, commented: "Canine enrichment activities, toys and homemade gifts can be a perfect way to keep spending under control this Christmas.

"We want to reassure dog owners that you don’t need to break the bank to give your dogs a fun festive season. DIY ideas for puzzles and games using items many people already have at home can help ensure your dog is keeping his brain engaged and expressing enjoyable natural behaviours like playing, foraging and chasing.

"For food-based games, make sure treats come out of your dog’s daily meal allowance, and to be sure to supervise your dog at all times with any of these activities."

No idea where they got £101 from as the average spend on buying a present for a dog.

For many people the only company they have is their dog. Says more about their family than it does about them as a dog owner.

Why shouldn’t people spoil their pets if that’s how they want to spend their money?

I think if you can afford to spend money on your pets and want to do it that's up to each individual.
