I hate when people call women, “females”. To me it’s a total amber flag warning me that this person could well be a total knob, or even an incel.

Which word do you choose to use for women/females? And why?

It doesn't bother me if I'm honest. And I have never really thought about it either as to what I call others. Probably women I would think. But no having someone say the word female would not make me jump to the conclusion they are an incel. That is a pretty big leap because they use one word.I would judge people more by the tone of what they say rather than one word alone.

Yep, it's grim and, if not a red flag, at least I've always found it a useful indicator of someone I won't like.

What's wrong with 'women'? Or, most of the time, trying to avoid such general terms altogether?

I don't think the majority of people mean any harm when they say females. However it is a turn off due to the way incels and misogynistic men use it. They use it to dehumanize women.

It's something that's only come to my attention recently as I never realised the term "female" could be seen as dehumanising but it is now something I've been conscious about when typing or reading.

Personally, I don't see the difference between the words, but ultimately it's up to others to decide what terms are and aren't acceptable.

Oh yeah definitely, and I’m not saying people who use “female” are incel. Just people who are incel don’t seem to use the word woman. Like I said, it’s an amber flag for me - like to be aware - not a red flag.

And yet couples use it all the time in forum posts and pm's. They either introduce themselves or sign off as the female half.

Or there's always the other issue that many women complain about being referred to as girls while so many others consistently talk about girlpower.

Some women prefer to be called ladies while I've seen comments on here saying they find that patronising.

It's a verbal minefield.

I suppose if couples signed off with woman half, well, it just doesn't sound right.

Sure, I don’t say that anyone who says “female” is an incel.

Calling women, “female” feels dehumanising to me. It can feel that I am being reduced to an animal or object status - a resource rather than a person with integral worth.

I repeat, I am not saying this applies to everyone but it definitely seems to be a thing in incel culture, where “females” are commodities.

I posted my question to see what everyone else thinks, to see if my thinking withstands the challenge or even whether there’s a general trend supporting my inference.

I can sort of see why the triangle for a skirt as it's a very clear universal image of a woman. Not everyone can read or speak English but most people would know the difference between the male and female symbols used for toilets and gender specific facilities.

Why would you need a picture of a woman in a dress and heels? Isn't it normally just a stick figure with a triangle to depict a skirt? "

Isn't that the same thing but different words? I mean what's a silhouette of a dress look like?

Exactly.

A female homosapien

And where do we see that written, day to day?

Female, in hospitals, gyms, and WCs.......

Don't think I've ever seen female homosapien written in any of these places.

Ok you go to the gym would you be happy to let males, men blokes or guys into the changing area?

It's gone right over your head hasn't it!"

If it has I would welcome an explanation as to why?

No as they don't normally have high heels.

We don't see female homosapien written anywhere outside of academic research.

Almost all the toilets I see have "gents/ladies or men/women" written on the signs.

I personally always use the gender neutral toilet anyway, even the picture that represents me is gender neutral

Honestly, I find it tiresome that the "image" of a woman is always a skirt/dress and heels. Just my personal view though.

I can sort of see why the triangle for a skirt as it's a very clear universal image of a woman. Not everyone can read or speak English but most people would know the difference between the male and female symbols used for toilets and gender specific facilities. "

When I've been abroad, lots of toilets don't have pictures on the door, but have something like "mujeres/caballeros" or whatever the local language is. People still seem to manage, but yes, I suppose. I abhorred wearing skirts/dresses as a younger person and was actually very keen NOT to be seen wearing one!

"And yet couples use it all the time in forum posts and pm's.

And girl power, to me that's all encompassing if ages, so works.

And ladies, I have no object to that, except that I'm not one "

As an adjective it’s fine.

As a noun to describe humans in a non-scientific context, it’s definitely a bit off.

I think it's all about context. About what term works best within the situation being spoken or written about. All of woman, lady, female, girl, fem, femme, hun, hinny (geordie dialect for those who don't know), lass (yorkshire/lancashire) and many others can be used in a respectful manner or a derogatory manner.

We need to listen less to the specific words being used, and listen harder to the intent behind the words.

The sexual health clinic at our local hospital has no gender specific division. It's just the sexual health clinic. Areas that might be gender-specific, e.g. maternity, just say "maternity department" or whatever.

I’m sorry you feel that way, I’m trying to protect someone who I feel may be vulnerable. "

"A female what?

Exactly.

A female homosapien

And where do we see that written, day to day?

Female, in hospitals, gyms, and WCs.......

Don't think I've ever seen female homosapien written in any of these places.

Ok you go to the gym would you be happy to let males, men blokes or guys into the changing area?

It's gone right over your head hasn't it!

If it has I would welcome an explanation as to why?

What has saying you don't see female homosapien written everywhere got to do with men being in a female changing room?

You are being ridiculous now.

No I'm really not. You said in response to me saying you don't see female homosapien written anywhere you stated that you do.

Really? You’re arguably being obtuse but the next time I see sign that identifies the female description I will take picture and e mail it to you.

OK you're not making any sense anymore and I think you should read back what you have been quoting on.

Ok I did say that the use of the term female was used was used in hospitals. My last GUM check up was in the male clinic of the hospital. The sign said male there was also a sign saying female. I dare say nobody gave a second thought to being aggressed or encumbered by those terms.

The sexual health clinic at our local hospital has no gender specific division. It's just the sexual health clinic. Areas that might be gender-specific, e.g. maternity, just say "maternity department" or whatever. "

I have seen women only clinics listed at the local gum clinic but the word female isn't normally used.

"I hate when people call women, “females”. To me it’s a total amber flag warning me that this person could well be a total knob, or even an incel.

Which word do you choose to use for women/females? And why?

I’ll be perfectly honest and say I have never given this a second thought until now…

Mrs

The topics of conversation in the forum are officially bollocks. A place for members to ask stupid questions?

Or for members to have/start a conversation in whatever subject they like, and without others being rude about it!

Spot on and it is getting ridiculous at the moment. Nobody is allowed to say anything some don't like something without People saying it's not a problem for them so they don't see why it should be a problem for others.

I haven't been around much but I certainly haven't missed this trend

Ignore him. He's just one of those people that likes to criticise. He could've read the topic, thought not for me, and scrolled past.

Instead, he insults the theme of the thread, saying its a stupid question and the forum is full of them.

But then continues to read and post comments in the aforementioned 'stupid thread'??

Yes, at first I found him laughable but now I think he might be learning disabled so I just don’t respond

Wow! Some of us have learning difficulties but we still deserve to be responded to, Somebody saying something you don't agree with is not the same as being learning disabled.

Probably best to steer clear of labelling people disabled or vulnerable then.

The Northern, Contraception & HIV Service is the GUM service for Manchester, Stockport and various other areas. I've been to the Hathersage Centre and the only gender divisions are in the toilets (same as anywhere else). There's nothing to suggest gender divided clinics online either: https://mft.nhs.uk/mri/services/sexual-health/ but maybe I'm looking in the wrong place?

The term "involuntary celibate" (shortened to "incel") refers to self-identifying members of an online subculture based around the inability to find a romantic or sexual partner despite desiring one, a state they describe as "inceldom" or "incelibacy".

That is the definition that I have come across on the Internet I have seen others that refer to men and women but none that just refer to men in the definition

"People spend far too much time, effort and energy getting offended over harmless words these days

This.

I'm a female woman who also happens to be a lady.

Seems men can't win

Where did the OP say men I think she used the word people.

She also said they could be an incel, which is an offensive term aimed at men only

According to online definitions, incel applies to men only

Yet the term was coined by a woman and femcels exist (unfortunately)

https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2021/oct/18/i-feel-hurt-that-my-life-has-ended-up-here-the-women-who-are-involuntary-celibates"

I dont think it matters who coined the phrase. Its aimed at men only, women as you say are known as femcels, so a different word to what was used by the OP

Regardless anyway, thats all incidental to my original point that people get offended over words far too much these days

Type 'incel definition' into google. The main result that appears specifies men only

The first proper definition is in Merriam Webster online:

incel

noun

in·?cel 'in-?sel

plural incels

: a person (usually a man) who regards himself or herself as being involuntarily celibate and typically expresses extreme resentment and hostility toward those who are sexually active

Manchester (she/her)

So people are too sensitive about words these days when it's about women, and so now we've derailed onto how the word incels is mean to men?

Fascinating

Yes we have. But nobody is getting offended about it.

Whats your point exactly?

I think the point is pointing out hypocrisy.

This seems indistinguishable from getting offended, I'm afraid. Just those who throw out accusations of everyone else getting offended believe themselves exempt from the charge.

Wheres the hypocrisy?

I made a general point that people get offended over words far too much these days.

The other woman made the point about the conversation tailing off to the debate re the definition of incel, as if that showed people getting offended.

I didn't see anyone getting offended, just merely discussing it and putting their own opinions forward

So wheres the hypocrisy exactly?
