It doesn't bother me if I'm honest. And I have never really thought about it either as to what I call others. Probably women I would think. But no having someone say the word female would not make me jump to the conclusion they are an incel.That is a pretty big leap because they use one word.I would judge people more by the tone of what they say rather than one word alone.

Yep, it's grim and, if not a red flag, at least I've always found it a useful indicator of someone I won't like.

What's wrong with 'women'? Or, most of the time, trying to avoid such general terms altogether?

I don't think the majority of people mean any harm when they say females. However it is a turn off due to the way incels and misogynistic men use it. They use it to dehumanize women.

It's something that's only come to my attention recently as I never realised the term "female" could be seen as dehumanising but it is now something I've been conscious about when typing or reading.

Personally, I don't see the difference between the words, but ultimately it's up to others to decide what terms are and aren't acceptable.

Oh yeah definitely, and I’m not saying people who use “female” are incel. Just people who are incel don’t seem to use the word woman. Like I said, it’s an amber flag for me - like to be aware - not a red flag.

I kind of get what you mean. Even I don't like using "woman" sometimes. For example, directing someone and saying "ask that woman over there" just sounds rude to me for some reason

I'd probably more likely to judge them on the context of a whole interaction rather than the use of just one word

I use the term "women" or "woman". I don't think I've knowingly or wittingly used the term "female" on this site.

With that said I'm more than happy to be humbly advised on any suitable synonym that would be deemed acceptable or non-offensive.

And girl power, to me that's all encompassing if ages, so works.

I generally don’t take offence to being called female/woman/girl/ etc…unless someone is being deliberately rude

Sure, I don’t say that anyone who says “female” is an incel.

Calling women, “female” feels dehumanising to me. It can feel that I am being reduced to an animal or object status - a resource rather than a person with integral worth.

I repeat, I am not saying this applies to everyone but it definitely seems to be a thing in incel culture, where “females” are commodities.

I posted my question to see what everyone else thinks, to see if my thinking withstands the challenge or even whether there’s a general trend supporting my inference.

I don't know anything about incel culture. But I rarely if ever use either term. If we were in communication I'd most likely use your name or however you wanted me to greet you. Language can be very powerful but can't help thinking it's being weaponised by some folks and that is being accommodated by others.

To be fair, it does. "That guy" or "that lad" may be better. Maybe I'm just being weird and overthinking it though

I would say saying that lad over there about a fully grown man would be rude as well as using the word guy. I don't think there's anything rude about the 2 examples given as long as it's not said in a rude or derogatory way.

Honestly, I find it tiresome that the "image" of a woman is always a skirt/dress and heels. Just my personal view though.

I can sort of see why the triangle for a skirt as it's a very clear universal image of a woman. Not everyone can read or speak English but most people would know the difference between the male and female symbols used for toilets and gender specific facilities.

We don't see female homosapien written anywhere outside of academic research.

Almost all the toilets I see have "gents/ladies or men/women" written on the signs.

I personally always use the gender neutral toilet anyway, even the picture that represents me is gender neutral

Almost all the toilets I see have "gents/ladies or men/women" written on the signs.

I personally always use the gender neutral toilet anyway, even the picture that represents me is gender neutral

Honestly, I find it tiresome that the "image" of a woman is always a skirt/dress and heels. Just my personal view though.

When I've been abroad, lots of toilets don't have pictures on the door, but have something like "mujeres/caballeros" or whatever the local language is. People still seem to manage, but yes, I suppose. I abhorred wearing skirts/dresses as a younger person and was actually very keen NOT to be seen wearing one!

I think it's all about context. About what term works best within the situation being spoken or written about. All of woman, lady, female, girl, fem, femme, hun, hinny (geordie dialect for those who don't know), lass (yorkshire/lancashire) and many others can be used in a respectful manner or a derogatory manner.

We need to listen less to the specific words being used, and listen harder to the intent behind the words.

Ok I did say that the use of the term female was used was used in hospitals. My last GUM check up was in the male clinic of the hospital. The sign said male there was also a sign saying female. I dare say nobody gave a second thought to being aggressed or encumbered by those terms.
