Do you have an internal monologue?
Jump to: Newest in thread
Here's a question that pops up on my FB feed every now and then and always blows up. Curious to see what you bunch of deviants think about it.
Do you have an internal monologue? As in an internal narration you hear all the time.
Or do you not have that? |

"Yup. Fucking nightmare, it never stops
Well…apart from when I’m having really good sex and I orgasm…makes sense why I need a lot of sex, eh"
There’s definitely a case for getting orgasms on prescription |

I only ever criticise myself on a daily basis and it tends to be the only internal dialogue I hear. I actually can't recall when I last spoke nicely to or about myself to myself, I only ever hear what a fat ugly cunt I am, how useless I am etc when in reality I know I'm not those things all the time. |

Not all the time but happens when things aren't going well or difficult or important meetings are imminent. I'm not sure if I'm overthinking or talking things out most of the time x |

My thoughts speak to me. Sometimes they are my direction and other times I ignore them. Usually they are the opposite of what I would say I am "supposed" to do, often they are negative. Finding my balance with them decides how I feel, most of the time. |

Be here most of the time I don't but there are occasions when I do have internal monologue and honestly it's not a nice place to be but it's getting worked on all the time and I never listen to what it says lol |

i recently found out that some people when reading, dont actually hear the words in their head. and i was astounded.
I wonder what other things people feel is normal for the human experience, that not every other human is actually aware of.
Like the people who see colours with music/sound or people who can taste words. I dont experience either of those. |

I think it's interesting that everyone experiences thought differently but generally have no idea other people are having a different experience.
For me personally I think without an internal voice, I just understand what I'm thinking about. If I want to share a thought then I use an internal monologue to translate the thoughts into language. |

Yes... I count everything. If I'm walking, I count my steps, if I'm listening to music I count the beat, if I'm looking forward to something I'm counting down the weks/days/hours etc.
Drives me mad sometime! |

I can relate 100% and I know it's horrible. You are a gorgeous lady and those thoughts are intrusive and untrue. You'll come through it stronger.
May I suggest a book called 'The Chimp Paradox'? I have it on audiobook and listen to it when I'm walking to work. It's really helping me to learn how to manage and change those thoughts and processes, hopefully it can help you too |

But do you move your lips while you're reading?
I do not*
*Unless I'm reading aloud "
I keep telling Ellen it isn't normal
Some consider the move from reading aloud (what everyone did in the early days) to silent reading to have been an evolutionary step.
All that reading used to be done in a chapter house. That's where we get chapters from. |

I don't and frankly, I find it baffling to comprehend what it must be like. Neither of us appear to have this internal voice/monologue. Perhaps we're both zombies? |

This always blows my mind, can't get my head round it. How can you not have an internal monologue, bizarre. I've got a friend you can't visualise things, which is just as odd. So if you said to her "apple", she can't see it in her mind. |

Yes I do. And when I'm in France my monologue is often in French - which is a real pain because I find myself using a lot of mental energy trying to find the right words. (My French is not at all brilliant). Anyone else find this when abroad? |

You shouldn’t and should embrace them. Try to understand where they are coming from, which feelings are entangled with those monologues. How accurate they are and so on. Until you manage to control them or at control the perspective you have on them.
When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change. |

I have a positive inner monologue. I've always played out life in my head, without knowing why.
I was a fantasist growing up, so that may be part of it.
My internal monologue now escapes from my mouth; making me the sad lady who talks out loud to herself as she walks to the shops.

Most of us do, but i know someone who hasn't. "
Is that as in a literal Narrator? Like

Does it describe everything you do? |

Self talk is constant apart from during sleep, butcthen it pops up via dreams.
What it's about varies.
Mine is influenced by my non neuro typical brain conditions, my ptsd effects, my irritation levels and the nag in my mind to do stuff to make my life slightly more liveable.
For the happier thoughts it's often cor, look at the bum on her yep. Guilty. |

When I am working something out at work it is an almost full on conservation, I do get some strange looks sometimes especially if I swear at myself and use my name.
Normally it just a quiet monologue but it can get to be a 2 sided affair. Yes, it can be worrying. |

No, it's genderless too unless like me it's a woman. Literally describing my life to myself would be deadly boring. |

"My brain never shuts up. If it's not an internal monologue then there's a song or a tune stuck in there. Can be quite annoying. "
I feel you. And then when I get in a situation where I want to remember the song lyrics, can I? No I can’t. Just one verse or chorus. Maddening |

I do, always thought it came from being a voracious reader. Developed my own little narrator's voice.
The trouble starts if my filter goes on the fritz and I listen to it too much coz she's a hardcore takenoshit kinda person.... truths escape me |

I can't speak French, but I definitely get this when I'm in Spain, monologue is twice as long because it's Spanish first, then translates it to English |

One of my lecturers in uni was asked when would you consider yourself fluent, since languages never stop evolving etc. He said, when you dream in that language it's a good indicator |
